Ok, here is the gist of this. We are 9th level through various deaths of almost everyone. We have monk, socerer, paladin, and a cleric-just got sainthood -9th level spell caster/11 character, plus a npc princess that is pregnant by the paladin. The paladin is the brother of the female cleric. The princess is the cousin of the female socerer.

The paladin decides to start a fight with a red dragon after we had just barely finished our previous fight with the red dragon aiding us. The dragon ripped the paladin's hand off and breathed fire on the paladin. Now everyone is out of spells at this point. The evil head cleric of Hextor comes out to now kill us. Oh, did I mention, our whole fight took place in front of the temple of Hextor. The only way that we survived our previous fight was that the Red dragon was tricked, by the socerer, into helping us.

That was the end of last game and now we have to beat the clerics and the dragon. We have to beat the clerics this night and hopefully get rest before we beat the dragon. The town has been sacrificing virgins to the dragon for 100 years and is very prosperous.

I'm suggesting that we try to see if the wizard will help us because he will have nothing to lose by helping us and he will make money in the bargain. I noticed some spells that might help, but I don't know if they will be enough. Such as: suppress breath weapon, lower spell resistence, there is one that will stop the dragon from flying. I just don't know if we can get off the spells that we need in the time before the dragon kills us all. On top of this, we still need to save the virgins from the jail befroe they become dragon chow.

Any advice?

Beat the paladin unconcussionous and exchange him for your free rethreat or use him as bait to lure the enemies in at trap or as distraction from your escape.

Sounds like an AWFUL GOOD paladin. The dragon just helped you, may have even saved you, and you did that by trickery. To just turn round and wallop him without any forewarning seems stuphid, and perhaps dishonourable depending on your stance on honour.

Feed the paladin to the dragon, a nice crunchy chewy treat after all those soft virgins, go away, sort thiongs out and come back armned and dangerous.

Well the dragon ate his hand and hurt him a little bit. This still doesn't deal with the evil cleric -probably 11 or 12 level standing in front of us. For the next day, the dragon itself. We have no wish spells or miracles and no way to get those. Since i'm the cleric and I'm about out of all of my spells what do you suggest?

There's no way you gonna beat that dragon unprepared and out of spells, not even considering the evil cleric(s). If you run away now, while the paladin still has his fighting spirit, it might buy you just enough time to get away. Come back tomorow and see if you find enough of the pali to revive him (if that's what you need to do). Of course you can always roll up a new character if you don't believe in strategical retreats.

What kind of cleric are you? Do you have the water or fire domain? If you do turn/rebuke the red dragon, it's a fire subtype.

I have the Good/War domains. No fire or water domains unfortunately. Any other suggestions? We think that we might have a many as 5 turns before he kills our whole party if we were to fight him the next day.

My strategy is to lower his spell resistance, suppress his breath weapon and use that spell to stop him from flying. Then I want to use my spells that will harm evil creatures. I'm hoping to enlist the aid of the local mage if possible.

Any other suggestions.

Trip the Paladin and run for your lives. :)

Talk to the other players and suggest that you attempt to talk your way out of the situation. The dragon may only eat the paladin if no one else attacks it.

I would still suggest running, as talking probably won't work in this situation.

Note when I first read through the situation, I thought the dragon ripped the paladin's head off. That would have made the whole situation simplier.

(First of all, one should chide the dragon for an illegal attack. Bite of sharpness is not in the 3E rules. You can't bite off a hand. You could have vorpal teeth I guess but that's going back to my original mistake.)

There is a lot of information you gave us, but there is a lot missing. You said you tricked the dragon into helping you. In what way did it help you? If the dragon was hurt or used some of its abilities your chances of survival go up considerably. Of course since the clerics probaly seem fresh this is probably a moot point.

In general, you are not prepared for this fight, and the clerics make you grossly unprepared for this fight. The option to "run away," is probably your best one at the moment.

Meanwhile, as you are running away, (and hopefully everyone will tend to want to dogpile on the paladin) you might be able to get someone (monk or sorcerer is my guess for the best one) to sneak back into the jail while everyone is trying to get the obvious targets.

I am a little confused by who the wizard is.

The Paladin being the brother of the cleric is a major issue here as it is unlikely that the cleric will want to abandon her sibling. Plus the princess might have feelings about abandoning him . . .

But that fight is going be be very tough-- I don;t suppose there is any way to play the cleric and the dragon against each other???

ok, the dragon might be evil, but the paladin broke a contact, broke his work with the dragon & attacked him?? Paladins are LAWFUL - they're not meant to betray people.

If that's the case then he deserves to be eaten.

more info on exactly how the dragon was tricked & how he helped you would be good, can't really advise here except to say there is no way you can defeat lots of clerics & a dragon when you have no spells!

And don't forget that paladins aren't allow to associate with evil persons (or dragons).

Make a strategic withdraw from combat (run away). My advice would be to run in different directions and try to meet at a known safe point, since the dragon and cleric can only chase one at a time.

I think you should eat the Palladin as a sign of loyalty to the dragon.

Everyone should ask the paladin just what his problem was, attacking the dragon like that after just working with it. Code or no code, he shouldn't have broken his word like that. And now his family and friends will pay for his stupidity. They shoulda just left, leaving the dragon alone (perhaps for another day). Now he's endangering not only his fighting companions but his female lover and her unborn child as well! This guy, if he lives, had better do some major atoning! And I think the princess should slap the crap out of him and dump his sorry, treacherous ass (if she didn't practically kill him)!

The wizard is just some wizard from town that was selling wands, spells, etc. The paladin thinks that he can beat the cleric on his own.

The socerer tricked the dragon into helping by telling the dragon that the evil clerics were going to find a new protecter and then betray the dragon. The rest of the party do not know why the dragon get the clerics busy while we had to deal with demons, but the dragon did.

We will have to deal with the cleric right away or we will not be able to leave town. After that, we can rest and get back our spells. The other problem that we have is we have an evil regenerating monk that is only half dead. I need to get my spells back to use break enchantment on him in the morning. Then we can break enchantment and kill him for good. You see, the monk put on a cursed ring that brought about this exact duplicate of himself only evil and more powerful of course. He was one of the others that we were fighting while the dragon kept the clerics busy.

The hand being bitten off was a special effect from the large amount of damage to the paladin. It was not in the rules persay. As my friend playing the paladin says, it was a way for the G.M. to mutilate the character.

I've only met one wizard in town, but this is a prosperous town, so I'm hoping that there is more.

Also, if there is evil going on in town for years and people grew up with it, such as sacrifcing out of towners children, would that make the whole town evil? Or would they just be neutral? I argued that they would be mostly neutral with evil elements. Evil elements such as the clerics, and the people directly raising and giving the virgins to the dragon. What do you think?

Any help? Is there anything else that I didn't explain? We are in dire need of assistance.

More in the way of explanation, our party is on a major quest to get rid of a major evil artifact called a "Dark Cross". It gives enourmous power to undead. We have to find all of the pieces of it and eventually reassemble it and destroy it in some way. The paladin has already lost the last piece that we fought for four long (7 hour) hard game sessions to get. Now that we are in this town, I can't see leaving these poor women stuck here. We may never make it back. There are three more pieces of the cross to get. We know where one of them is and have no idea where the last one is or where the mummy that stole the other piece (the one that the paladin practically gave to him) is located.

I sacrificed 2 levels to save 2 NPC's going after the last piece. The next one will be even more difficult. So I don't know how we are going to survive. This is why I don't want to leave this situation unresolved. We won't be coming back this way.

Associates: While she may adventure with characters of any good or neutral alignment, a paladin will never knowingly associate with evil characters, nor will she continue an association with someone who consistently offends her moral code. A paladin may accept only henchmen, followers, or cohorts who are lawful good.Having said that, this is the DMs fault for forcing you to work with a Red Dragon and not expecting the Paladin to object. If the rest of your group thinks the Paladin was wrong (probably the case), then the best course is to run away and hope the Dragon is more upset at the insolence of the Paladin than your group and goes after him first.
If your cleric has to stay because of family convictions, that's perfectly in character, and I'd give her bonus xp for her next character for playing true to form.
If the princess objects, well, so what, you're there to save her right? Fighting the Red Dragon once you have her is sort of the opposite of saving her.

The paladin and cleric are brother and sister so there isn't much chance that they will split up. The princess and sorcerer are are npc and playercharacter are sisters. The monk is a guy and just along for the ride.

So ideas?

The paladin, realizing the dilemma he's gotten the party in, probably should heroically sacrifice himself. Especially if in doing so, the rest of the party can get away safely. He's the one who started this mess, he should be the one to straighten it out.

Ok, here's what you do. Any characters that aren't related- poison the food of the people that will stand by the paladin, just to knock them out. Tie up the paladin, and offer him to the dragon as a gift, because he's such an impressive and powerful creature, and beg for forgiveness, saying something like "Our tiny intellects cannot fathom the fate that would await us should we earn your ire."

Now, personally, as a player, I would not storm a temple of Hextor directly, but hey...

Well it was down ot three of us to fight the cleric. We had the cleric, the paladin, and the monk. The princess was killed and the cleric escaped. So we rested a night and the paladin decided to incite a riot in the town by confiscating the gold shipment to the dragon. Needless to say, he was arrested and we went along. He gave the gold back to the people and the mob decided to storm the cleric's temple to Hextor.

We figured that we would have a chance with a mob along. Nope, the high priest came out and scared them off. Then the statue came to life and decided to aid the priest and attack us. This time we came prepared. I found out how we can beat the dragon. The cleric casts righteous might, divine power and also every kind of boost or protection available. If at the end of 10 rounds, you don't kill it, then you are dead anyway. This is how we beat the giant statue. With a resist energy against the dragon, we might stand a chance. Also, we met with the wizard in town and he gave us weapon that might kill the dragon. I'll let you know.

I find this story most confusing. The dragon had helped you through the previous battle, when the paladin decides to start a fight with it. Everybody was out of spells and the evil cleric of hextor comes out to kill you.

How in the nine hells could this be anything but TPK? Did the dragon twiddle his claws while you fought the cleric(s)? Is he in the union and his working hours end at 4:20 pm sharp or what happened here? Did you excuse yourselves from the battle with a letter mom wrote so you could go home and get some rest before continuing the fight the next day?

Please shine some light on this. Because it didn't sound like a hatchling and a few apprentices coming for you in the first post.

The dragon took off for some reason after beating the paladin up. The only spells that the cleric had left were a few domain spells. Between the paladin, the monk and the cleric, we were able to fight off the evil cleric. The dragon is its own person and doesn't fight people just to fight people. We had backed off of the dragon so he went back to his cave or somewhere else and left us alone.

Our Gm counted people that couldn't make the game as keeping the other clerics at bay.

I don't think that the dragon (a red adult dragon) actually thinks that we would take it on. Why should he? He has killed numerous other dragon hunters in the past. Since he has nothing to fear from us, he just left to let us get beat up by the clerics. Luckily, we mostly beat the cleric and then we ran for our lives out oftown to a mine for safety.

Does that explain the situation?
