| Board_Rider03-31-05, 12:13 PM | Hey Party people, New Campaign, new PC. Have a "free" level before I progress into a PrC. Free meaning that the level is being used for skill points only...doesn't matter the class. Already Ranger2/Fighter2. So what is the best/most versatile class at 1st level? |
| Majorafire7703-31-05, 12:17 PM | Rogue 8+Int mod skill points |
| AramilWindwalker03-31-05, 12:20 PM | I second rogue, especially since it sees you are going to a martial class and wanting to up ref saves is good, but if you think it could work, give bard a chance 6+int mod sp and goog Ref+Will saves. |
| Draco Strang03-31-05, 12:22 PM | Board Rider, Is this that same tiefling character you posted a few weeks ago, not sure what direction to take him? If so, you should have yielded to my infinite wisdom and omniscience earlier, instead of dragging it up again. I said it before, Majora said it, and I'll say it again. Rogue. You get a bewildering array of class skills, that nifty +1d6 SA damage, and Trapfinding. Do it to it Lars! (Tell me where the came from, I dare you.) So....now that I've gifted you with another gem from my mind, I bid you good day. P.S.- It's been sunny and 75 here for the last 3 days. You can keep California and the beaches...we have sorority girls sunning themselves and playing frisbee. Life is good. |
| Rammos03-31-05, 12:22 PM | What PrC are you taking? |
| psionichamster03-31-05, 01:29 PM | bard decent saves, 6+int skills, and whip proficiency sure, it sounds corny, but every adventurer should be able to use a whip namaste, the hamster (for skills, go rogue, Draco's right. and co-eds in sunny New England, too!) |
| Draco Strang03-31-05, 01:45 PM | (for skills, go rogue, Draco's right. and co-eds in sunny New England, too!) Yea...I just got back from a 2 mile run around campus. Girls as far as the eye can see. I swear, when the last 6 weeks of winter are up, they surface from their dorms, wearing as few clothes as possible. Just like the groundhog. Warms me right down to the cockles of my heart. |
| Board_Rider03-31-05, 02:08 PM | Board Rider, Is this that same tiefling character you posted a few weeks ago, not sure what direction to take him? It is a Tiefling (again) but a different campaign and PC. I am going for the Bloodhound PrC. Once I get enough XP for 6th level I will advance the full 10 in that PrC. I was thinking Rogue too seeing as it is the Tieflings favored class. But that being so I can always pick it up later (around lvl 16) w/o penalties. Additionally, there is a player going straight Rogue already. I was kinda leaning on Sorcecerer or Favored Soul for a few utility spells. Then thought about the Scout class so I can Tumble 10' and get that extra d6 of damage whenever possible. It too has the Trapfinding ability. Then I was looking at the Cleric....a couple of spells and the Domain abilitites. *sigh* P.S.- It's been sunny and 75 here for the last 3 days. You can keep California and the beaches...we have sorority girls sunning themselves and playing frisbee. Life is good. It is good indeed. You're a lucky guy. Sadly, all I am left with are these model types who sunbathe naked. Then, of course, you have those damn female beach vollyball players. Not to mention the "actresses" who will do just about anything to get a "role". To top it off they actually believe it when you say you can "help" them, if they "help" you. Sure, there are gals from USC, UCLA and Irvine (not to mention Long Beach State) who party and booze it up....but thats just....well...eh. Especially when it's year round! 3 days of Sirority girls and Frisbee.......you lucky guy..... I wish it were so simple. Thanks for the input so far guys! PS: I am stumped on that Lars line..... |
| lukelightning03-31-05, 02:22 PM | commoner. They get spot and profession. |
| AramilWindwalker03-31-05, 02:29 PM | I had just been struck over the head by my CV book, and it opened to Scout, and it said, suggest this, so i am, now I need to take it for a walk *walks off with CV on leash* |
| Draco Strang03-31-05, 03:08 PM | I was kinda leaning on Sorcecerer or Favored Soul for a few utility spells. Then I was looking at the Cleric....a couple of spells and the Domain abilitites. *sigh* Hm.......Scout is ok, but you lose out on the ridiculous skill list. Plus, you have to make the Tumble check. Granted, it wouldn't be very hard, but with a rogue all ya need to do is flank on, flank off, and you've got your d6 damage. I would advise against Sorcerer, because you only know a few spells. With the wealth you have right now, you'd be able to buy and scribe pretty much any 1st level wizard spell you wanted into your book. Of course, the Ranger/Wizard combo isn't a stellar one RPwise, but I think it'd give you a little more versatility, instead of having like 3 spells at your disposal, with no chance to get more. It is good indeed. You're a lucky guy. Sadly, all I am left with are these model types who sunbathe naked. Then, of course, you have those damn female beach vollyball players. And how many have you "helped" get roles? Do you have any ranks in Profession (Sleazeball) to give you that +2 synergy bonus to Bluff? Hehe...you know I'm jokin buddy. :D 3 days of Sirority girls and Frisbee.......you lucky guy..... I wish it were so simple...... Well ya know what.......I take what I can get. Our girls have a vast collection of cute winter sweaters, I'll have you know. Ever heard the term "ski bunny"? Yea...that's right....let's hit the slopes, hoss. Nothing like warming up after a rousing snowball fight with help from a roaring fire and bearskin rug. But, since you seem to have a leg up on the claim to living in paradise, it's time to share the wealth. That's right, I'm movin in...we're gonna be best pals. Clear off your couch and stock up on SPF 4000 buddy, cuz ole' Draco's comin for a visit. PS: I am stumped on that Lars line..... Tony Perkis (Ben Stiller) from the Disney feature film "Heavyweights". Get with the program BR. |
| danielinthewolvesden03-31-05, 04:12 PM | Just take another level of ranger. Still good skillpoints, better saves, and a +1 BAB. |
| Board_Rider03-31-05, 04:18 PM | What about Favored Soul? Good saves. Plus some defensive spells I could select.... And how many have you "helped" get roles? Clear off your couch and stock up on SPF 4000 buddy, cuz ole' Draco's comin for a visit. Sadly, those days are behind me. I am married now. Those skills are now wasted and replaced with "Profession: Nagging Wall" and "Perform: Spouse Pleader". Although there is some use in Bluff..... I too know the importance of a good sweater collection. There was a time when I was single and young living upstate NY...around the Canadian border. And even though I know the term "ski bunny" those were usually left for those who could actually ski. Me? I ate snow and hung at the bar..... But come on out buddy....the beer is cold, the women hot and ripe for the taken. Just because I already ordered, doesn't mean I can't look at the menu. I'll play Wingman....good times. Tony Perkis (Ben Stiller) from the Disney feature film "Heavyweights". Get with the program BR. So YOU were the reason it grossed $6.50 in the box office!!!! I was always curious...... |
| Draco Strang03-31-05, 08:04 PM | What about Favored Soul? Good saves. Plus some defensive spells I could select.... Favored Soul would be ok I guess....it's all in what you want. Personally I don't like the class, but I know for a fact it's a mechanically sound one. Go for it if it's what you wanna do. Sadly, those days are behind me. I am married now. Those skills are now wasted and replaced with "Profession: Nagging Wall" and "Perform: Spouse Pleader". Although there is some use in Bluff..... And even though I know the term "ski bunny" those were usually left for those who could actually ski. Me? I ate snow and hung at the bar..... Dude..I never knew you were married. Secret keeper, you. Here I've been under the guise that you're a soon to be graduated college student. Guess your Disguise skill is pretty high. But come on out buddy....the beer is cold, the women hot and ripe for the taken. Just because I already ordered, doesn't mean I can't look at the menu. I'll play Wingman....good times. Sad thing is, a buddy and I actually have Official Wingman Jerseys (tm) that we artfully crafted one night, and then hit the bars that don't bother carding us 19 year olds. Personally, I think it's a sad indicatior of the nation's morality when you actually pick up girls because of the Official Wingman Jerseys. Yes...another lame technique that is tried and true, checked off the list by your buddy Draco. Maybe I should host Mythbusters. So YOU were the reason it grossed $6.50 in the box office!!!! I was always curious...... Hey, it's actually a good-ass movie. Ben Stiller hit his theatrical peak with the "Ok josh, get on the scale!....Ok, get off the scale" line. It's really brilliant. I've seen the movie about 30 times. |
| r0gu303-31-05, 08:12 PM | I would say go with a rogue. With a rogue there are so many skill options and the 1d6 SA damage is pretty nifty. Do it to it Lars! (Tell me where the came from, I dare you.) That is from Heavyweights! "Put your fat finger down!" |
| Draco Strang03-31-05, 08:19 PM | That is from Heavyweights! "Put your fat finger down!" Late...but you get my respect for providing the right answer. I swear...no one touched that for the longest time. Thank's r0gu3. |
| Steelborn8603-31-05, 08:21 PM | What about Barbarian? Decent hit points, extra speed, and rage 1/day. |
| Cold Napalm03-31-05, 10:11 PM | Free level...for skills you say... EXPERT...pick 10 skill YOU want, how can you pass that up? |
| twad03-31-05, 10:17 PM | i was going to say that too.. Expert. |
| Draco Strang03-31-05, 10:56 PM | Free level...for skills you say... EXPERT...pick 10 skill YOU want, how can you pass that up? the 10 skills you want are nice, but Rogues get every knowledge, profession, and craft skill, in addition to a buttload of others. Pretty much any skill they don't have is already covered by his ranger/fighter set up. And experts lose out on a lot of other stuff as well. |
| legowarrior03-31-05, 11:02 PM | Hexblade for the curse ability. Only 2 skill points, but +1 BAB and curse. |
| SoulLord04-01-05, 01:46 PM | How about sorcerer? even in full plate some true strike spells seem like a good option |
| Swiss61904-01-05, 02:00 PM | If you can take NPC classes fromt he DMG, Expert would be pretty good. Any 10 skills areclass skills. For a freebie skills-only level, this is a pretty good choice. |
| Board_Rider04-01-05, 02:13 PM | If you can take NPC classes fromt he DMG, Expert would be pretty good. Any 10 skills areclass skills. For a freebie skills-only level, this is a pretty good choice. Yeah, I must apologize for this and to others. What I meant was that this level is basically free as I already know which skills that I am taking. Skill points and selection are really a non factor. I am going to finish my Gather Information need in ranks. Rogue would be the simpliest way but I was wondering what everyones opinions are of the other classes at 1st level....any class that is offered in a WoTC book. |
| Warchicken04-01-05, 04:02 PM | You could always go for one of the classes from Complete Arcane. Warmage if you have a high CHA, nothing like not having to deal with a spell book, all damage spells, and you can cast while wearing light armor without any penalties. BAB isn't that great, but with a decent CHA you do get some spells and having all of those damage spells do come in handy. Skill points are a bit low, but for a dip down it isn't that bad for a secondary class. Or there's the much maligned Warlock. EB as a ranged touch attack. Good to have against high AC, but low Touch. One Invocation, if you go with Entropic Warding it could come in handy as a bloodhound. See the Unseen is also a nice one to pick. Spiderwalk is also nice to have. I'm a little biased, seeing as I'm playing one now, but the Warlock isn't bad except for the really low BAB and Skill Points. The other abilities to make it rather nice. |
| RogerWilco04-01-05, 04:15 PM | Can you go a level of Monk, Wisdom to AC, all saves +2, or any suugested above. If any PrC is allowed, then why not Fochlucan Lyrist from Complete Adventurer ;) |
| Anthus_Longblade04-01-05, 04:19 PM | If I were in this situation, I'd probably go with another level of ranger. The reason being that I favor not multiclassing if I can help it. While ranger may not be the most optimal choice, it's better than fighter at this point and will probably maintain a better level of consistency and believability than taking a third base class. Plus, it steps you closer to the higher-level ranger abilities, like spells and your second favored enemy. |
| Maryk_Keiros04-02-05, 07:07 PM | I say bard, you get a shitload of skills and bonuses in a lot of places |
