Best build for the Artificer who stays OUT of combat (a mule)? [Archive] - Wizards Community

In my last DnD session I adopted an 8 year old human female, who I am seriously considering making into an artificer.

She will be the group item maker, and I need an artificer build with feats and skills to compliment this. I have looked at other builds and they are primarily for warforged or combat artificers, and not really focussed on JUST item creation (we already have plenty of heavy hitters in the party, and it's a low magic world so magic items are VERY hard to find)

Her stats are as follows:

Str: 5
Dex: 10
Con: 8
Wis: 6
Int: 9
Cha: 12

My DM also agreed that even though her ability scores are a bit low, it will increase as time goes on.

Thanks!

Ummm... Well, with stats like those, she won't be able to cast artificer spells anyway for some time (Infusions are INT-based). However, once your stat issues are dealt with, I figure all you need is a normal artificer with maximum ranks in Use Magic Device, and maybe also Spellcraft. She'll need the necessary item-crafting feats, of course. And, since she won't be coming with you on adventures, you're going to need to give her a steady stream of items to burn up as fuel to make the things that YOu want.

Skill focus: UMD is a must. Any stat boosting items that would improve her crafting skills that you don't plan on using yourself should be given to her as well.

That said, I am appalled that you want to use child labor to sponsor your adventuring business.

Improved Homuculus, and Improved Toughness. You don't want her getting attacked while you are away, so a hordicifer build will keep a few Iron Defendes at her side, and later a Runic Guardian will be her nanny. I recomend Improved Toughness also. Children with homunculi can be hard on their tiny ammount of HP, so the more, the better.

The Incarnum feat : Shape soulmeld(Mage Spectacles) gives +4 to spellcraft & UMD IIRC. with the option of spending another feat later to increase that to +8 around L6.

Edit - oh and the obvious crafting discount feats.

For what it's worth, I remember seeing a feat from Forgotten Realms that allows you to sell for 75% of worth, instead of 50%. I think it was in the CS or players guide.

Might be of use for the merchant in you. (Throw in a few Dedicated Wright homonculii and it really would be a sweat shop).

First, her INT is slightly more important than CHA. Second, by PHB rules she is entitled to reroll her stats. See pg. 8 of the Player's Handbook for that information. Making any cohort of PC keep those stats will guarantee that the character will die from any unfortunate event. If this is an NPC, I recommend using the DMG's rule of having their base stats be 15,14,13,12,10,8. This at least provides some muscle in case of emergency, as no character can avoid combat forever.

Talk this over with your DM. Be sure to point out the PHB reroll, and if not, reassign her CHA with her INT and DEX.

Also, if she is "staying at home", it might make an interesting plot line - BBEG kidnaps her.

I know it is an 8-year old girl but the physical score penalties are not that high, seriously. Also if these are rolled scores then you can probably reroll them but if they are assigned scores due to the stereotype of her being a kid then remember that if she is a PC (or even an NPC) that she is not of the common mold. If she has the skills and talent to be an aritificer at 8 then surely she at least has mental scores of 13-14
