| Adraedan09-30-04, 10:44 AM | What was the best thing you ever used as a weapon to get out of a situation? My favourite was during an 2nd Ed modern campaign my buddy made up. He had this habbit of having me attacked by the Chinese gang (who always drove red honda civics)...this particular battle took place at my own house, I had been sleeping when the gang busted down my front door. Now, the DM allowed us to have magic and such in a modern world, and my character, though technically a fighter, had volunteered to be experimented on and out of luck I acheived the ability to create darkness as per the spell. I created darkness on my front door and ran out the back door. Unfortunatly, they were also waiting for me there. A pretty good fight insued, that involved me having to kick a grenade away from myself and narrowly avoid a few sprays with an uzi. I ran into my own backshed to use as cover while I tried to hold all of them off, but I ran out of ammo. In panic I looked around my shed for anything useful, and what did I find? A lawnmower...I strapped the thing to my chest using an extension cord (a la DeadAlive) and proceeded to make chop suey (forgive the pun). I also had a halfling cleric who liked the idea of "create fire" in people's gas tanks. |
| oneday09-30-04, 11:41 AM | Beating a troll with it's own dismembered arm! ;) Until he disarmed me.....haha, and reattached it. |
| Moon-Lancer09-30-04, 11:42 AM | how about a chain saw straped to ones severd arm... hehehe just kidding. this isent really improvised weapons but i like knocking enemys to the ground then steping on their chest with my big kittys feet with a full blade pointed in thier general direction. also its fun to use perfect flying to do matrix stunts. sounds stuped but it allows for a form of wall running. |
| MortalPlague09-30-04, 11:46 AM | A friend of mine played a PC who was a dashing rogue who fought with any weapons available. During one battle with a large group of armored caravan guards, the character was in melee on a wide cliffside ledge. One of the others on the ledge above tossed a grappling hook to try and catch the captain, but missed. The inventive PC picked up the grappling hook, and smashed it into the guard captain, scoring a critical hit. The other PC then hauled him up the cliff and used him to knock the guards that were climbing up off the cliff. ...unfortunately, the PC was shortly slaughtered by the other guards, and the captain had enough hit points to tough it out. But it was still a great moment. |
| Brent09-30-04, 12:08 PM | Well I was DMing for a barbarian PC once who ended up getting into a bar fight with a pair of minotaurs, he promptly beat them both with a TABLE until the table broke. |
| jnrhayz09-30-04, 12:24 PM | While playing a Barbarian, a bar fight ensued when a group of 5-7 enemies told me to move from the table I was at. I used my beer mug to smash them for a while until they finally knocked my unconscious (I was 1st level) and threw me into the street... hehe fun times... |
| Thorak09-30-04, 12:25 PM | A medium-sized tree. 2nd edition Girdles of Giant Strength were fun, especially if you were a dwarf. And even more especially when it's the first session you're testing out the 'new' critical hit tables with severity and location charts. And, when everyone's snickering at you for being a ridiculous fool wielding a tree, you promptly roll max scores for each roll, killing the enemy instantly with the first swing. Good times. Good times. |
| Kialindo09-30-04, 01:07 PM | Right there in my sig ... Improvised Weapon: orc, self Right now I am playing a Dwarven Battlerager (or at least will be once I lvl up enough) We were in a dungeon where a bunch of orcs had barricaded themselves in a room and we had captured an orc earlier. Up to the door went Sadak Orc in hand. Using intimidate I got the orc to try to convince the orcs on the other side that he had killed us and that it was safe ... well that failed so the wizard in our group used a knock spell to open the door. On the other side of the door were two rather surprised orcs and I looked at my DM with a stone straight face and asked, "Whats the damage on an orc?" We finally ruled 1d6 + str subdual .... Both Orcs the target and the one flying were knocked unconsious when I rolled max damage doing 10 to each ..... And well .... self .... we will just put this in your minds .... 20' cliff .... and me on top of the cliff with a spiked Shield and nothing else :D |
| MortalPlague09-30-04, 01:18 PM | I just remember a hilarious moment in gaming for our group. One character had picked up another, a halfling, and there were enemies approaching. The big warrior says, "I throw the halfling." :D |
| anshar09-30-04, 01:28 PM | Well, back in 2nd edition I had a half-ogre fighter. My compainion (a human chavelier) and I were beaten in a fight by a group of orcs. We weren't killed and I awoke tied by my hands and feet to a log being carried to the orc camp. Now, this fighter of mine wasn't too bright. With one hitpoint to my name, and my friend still out cold, I managed to break my bonds and attempt an escape. After freeing myself I realized I was in hot water as I was surrounded by orcs and had no weapon. So, I picked up the log to which I had just been tied, let out a mighty roar and swung it like a baseball bat. I killed two of the orcs outright and a third went down to a critical hit in the next round. The two remaining orcs fled back to camp where my friend and I later dispatched them. |
| Bartleby_GoC09-30-04, 10:38 PM | A few of my favorites include an arrow (gladiator-style pit fight, human vs. ogre, he had a BIG bow, I had the broken stub of a spear, I took an arrow, faked being dead, then sprung up and nearly castrated the brute with the arrow I pulled out of myself, cool scene), a beer stein (dwarf in a bar fight, they'd confiscated the weapons at the door), a dead dire rat (halfling-sized flail), and a dinner fork (pinned naga-spawn to the floor so it couldn't escape). Bartleby |
| Sukugaru09-30-04, 10:48 PM | In a recent session, my bandit/rogue character used a gold coin like a shuriken. Sadly, the DM had the target catch the coin, but it *did* distract him long enough for a Sneak Attack. |
| Reinsuoknera10-01-04, 05:02 AM | My Cleric of Torm who was basically a fighter with spells and the turning ability hit somebody with a ladder once. My halfling Rogue cracked a Half-Orc with a stein for one damage. My Dwarven Barbarian once secured a vial of strong alcohol wrapped in a flaming cloth to the tip of an arrow shaft and successfully caught a Girallon on fire, too bad he rolled around and put himself out. |
| Master Agnald10-01-04, 08:00 AM | My party's monk once used a large stone as a weapon to kill a gelatinous cube that had fallen on my character's head... he also threw a torch to set it on fire... with me inside it... thank god I had high HP... ...personally I think that using a 10ft pole as an improvised weapon would be fun... or maybe some pots and pans... humm... I wonder if I can get those enchanted... it would be pretty cool to have a +1 flaming pan as a weapon... though it would require Exotic Weapon Proficiency, wouldn't it? |
| Adraedan10-01-04, 10:04 AM | To list a few other favourites of mine... Half a bed A Smiths forge (fire immunity, waiting in the forge...SURPRISE!) A Bag of eyes Me (Dwarf fighter, barrel of gunpowder on back, potion of invulnerability) Tree-catapult Aarakocra spine Minotaur (good standoff using a dead minotaur and a wand of wonder) Garbage Truck Bag of rocks |
| Sucineri10-01-04, 10:11 AM | In my previous group one of the players had a character who's best friend and only weapon was a door. I guess it was a sentient door or something, but he talked to it and beat people to death with it. :) |
| Grox10-01-04, 10:30 AM | IMO the best improvised weapon is the steel folding chair, hands down . . . in D&D or IRL! :) |
| Sucineri10-01-04, 10:45 AM | "steel" folding chair..as in what they use in wrestling? I was part of a backyard wrestling group and those chairs are aluminum, not steel..but saying "steel" makes it sound so much more dangerous. |
| amethal10-01-04, 10:51 AM | How about worst improvised weapon? The party were fighting animated furniture, and the wimpy cleric was being grappled by a tapestry. He finally succeeded on an opposed grapple check, and managed to get the thing off him. The halfling rogue saw his opportunity and attacked the tapestry with a nearby torch. The tapestry caught fire. On its turn, it promptly re-grappled the cleric, who was now caught by a burning tapestry..... |
| CuCulain4210-01-04, 12:00 PM | I a recent game I was playing a sorc, and used a crowbar after prying open a crate that contained a giant centipede. Shovels also make good improvised weapons, I've had several characters use them. In a modern horror campaign the character I was playing beat a demonic hound to death with the lid of a toilet tank. Also herrings especialy versus treants... :D |
| jnrhayz10-01-04, 02:22 PM | You know, I forgot this completely until just now... We were playing and we hired a mercenary to join our group (new player to the group, 2nd session, we were still first level), and one of the other players was taking a bath in the nearby stream. Well, everyone left to do things for the camp out in the woods. We left the mercenary to protect and settle into camp. Well, the other player comes back... finds a stranger walking around camp looking at our stuff... He only has his underclothes and a bar of soap... So he throws his soap at the mercenary... scores a critical... and knocks the guy out. One of the funniest things that ever happened in that game. |
| Piff10-01-04, 06:16 PM | I would say the fork. In one of our games with just the same fork we killed a gost and 3 people. the funny part of it was against all 3 people it rolled a crittical with just enogh to kill them. |
| White rabbit10-01-04, 08:53 PM | Now this happened a looong time ago, but as I recall it, our group had slain a giant (stone I believe), and it promptly fell on a couple of it's ogre followers. I suppose that's an improvised weapon. ;) |
| kasthevampire10-01-04, 09:24 PM | i remember i was in a high powered evil campain. beer was our improvised weapon we lit the tavern on fire with it lol. |
| Sidious10-01-04, 09:54 PM | I recall an improvised morningstar...made out of a burning oil lantern. They killed twenty kobolds by lgihting them, the beds and the room on fire, then jumping over the kobolds and locking the door. Then they also lit a quartersaff on fire... My group drives me nuts sometimes. |
| kasthevampire10-01-04, 09:57 PM | after being a dm for a ce group all i can say is aye curumba! its crazy they wanted to take over the world lol. and they tried to steal the kings wife... little did they know she was a succibus. lots of levels lost there good thing she didn't do it with the sword wraith  :D |
| trapspringer10-02-04, 12:22 AM | I am surprised no one has mentioned the infamous bag of holding. A type IV bag of holding deals a whopping 3d6 damage. Other good choices include 5x5 sections of floor, wall, ceiling, or other less substantial forms of matter, like lava. A pillow. The gnome. |
| porygandrew10-02-04, 12:38 AM | Chopsticks. Helped us get out of our jail cell and worked really well when tipped with poisons. The rogue of our group was very happy  |
| BlurrX10-02-04, 12:45 AM | I have an insane Dwarf fighter, in one of the first fights he was surrounded by a pack of wolves, dropped his axes, and pulled out a spade, worked pretty well...was funny too when the other party members reached him. |
| MortalPlague10-02-04, 05:46 AM | One of my PCs was playing an ogre who was being level drained by being kissed by a succubus. Well, he managed to make his will save once, and he asks me, "Do I need to stop kissing her to bite her head off?" He did. The other succubus fled the angry ogre. :P |
| kasthevampire10-02-04, 09:49 AM | I am surprised no one has mentioned the infamous bag of holding. A type IV bag of holding deals a whopping 3d6 damage. Other good choices include 5x5 sections of floor, wall, ceiling, or other less substantial forms of matter, like lava. A pillow. The gnome. pillow whats that do subdual damage. and yes those gnomes come in very handy :D |
| Scaer_Vieliss10-02-04, 12:20 PM | Right now I'm playing a half-orc psychic warrior, who a couple sessions back was trying to convince a gnoll to let go of a kid he was going to cook in a giant pot of boiling water. The gnoll was on the opposite side of the room, with the pot between us. Several gnoll bodies were nearby, so I picked up one and threw it at the gnoll.... ...Instead hitting the pot and scalding the gnoll into unconsciosness. The kid was a little burned, but lived. |
| Adraedan10-02-04, 01:25 PM | I just remembered as well, in that same campaign with the lawnmower, my character kept gaining "darkness" powers, and I eventually gained the ability to travel between planes with a shadowwalk variant spell...my DM made me eventually fight Batman (my DM is an odd fellow) and Robin. I killed Robin by throwing the bat mobile at him and then chokeslammed Batman into hell. |
| Lincoln Hills10-02-04, 04:24 PM | Well, the most entertaining improvised weapon I've actually, really and truly seen used in mortal combat was definitely a chicken bone. I leave the details of such an incident to the imagination of the reader. Or are you asking what the most EFFECTIVE improvised weapon is? 'Cause then I'd have to say the ground: you can sometimes get 20d6 damage out of it... although Strength bonuses don't apply. |
| FrostyObsitnic10-02-04, 11:23 PM | The party wizard took great pains to make "nerf" arrows for his crossbow. I wasnt sure why he was doing it until he soaked the tip of the arrow in a potion of inflict. Good times. Another character who had a hand made out of fire (long story) Drank a mouthfull of whiskey, then stepped around the corner and spit it through his hand onto the waiting barbarian. The barbarian proceeded to stumble backwards into a pit of lava. This last one wasnt a PC, but rather a couple of my monsters. The party encountered a couple of water trolls basking in a calm lake in the middle of the clearing. The trolls emerged from the lake and proceeded to snatch up surrounding bunnies and fling them at the party. Now THAT'S an improvised weapon. |
| MortalPlague10-03-04, 03:09 AM | Ohhh, I can't believe I forgot about this one... :D Best improvised weapon ever used in one of my games, and also the most effective! To start off, the party was in a town that had recently suffered an attack by zombies, ghouls, and skeletons, during which the PCs had helped fight them off. They feared the necromancer behind it all would return, so they formed a militia, and one of the PCs managed to worm his way onto the town council (the mayor had been slain, and they needed a temporary ruling council). So the PCs were a major part of preparing defenses. Unfortunately, they neglected to burn the bodies, and when the necromancer returned, he raised many of them as zombies to fight them from within. Gethrou the halfling (yes, pronounced Jethro) was with a bunch of archers on the rooftop near the front, where the necromancer and his undead forces were attacking the city. The road was blocked, but the necromancer wasn't to be stopped. He started to climb the building to get at the halfling and the archers in close combat. Gethrou withdrew his Quall's Feather Token: Swan Boat, spoke the command word, and dropped it. Necromancer: "SH@!$!$!!!" Swan Boat: SMASH! One dead necromancer. The main villain in the campaign ended up being the necromancer's much more powerful son who tried to kill Gethrou repeatedly; not so much because he missed his old man, but because allowing family to be killed set a bad precedent. :P |
| JabberWocky10-03-04, 03:13 AM | PC: "I tie the kobold to a length of rope and begin wielding him like my spiked chain!" DM: :uh-huh: |
| Chrys10-03-04, 12:13 PM | a 'dead' warforged... ok in our 1st Eberron game Me (Half-giant {redused to la 0} fighter with a 20 str) and the Forged Ranger (bow style) are try to keep a group (3) of Evil forged from getting down the hallway. well I 'kill' one but he sundered my sword and the Ranger is almost dead... so I pick up Forged I killed and beat the others |
| kasthevampire10-03-04, 12:18 PM | has anyone ever played morrowind bloodmoon if so you might have seen a great weapon called severed nord leg lol. |
| holyspy10-03-04, 01:30 PM | a rock i was on a cliff and my freind was sorrunded at the bottom and all those skeltons impolded |
| Tokogaru10-03-04, 09:22 PM | Well this isnt DnD but 2 days ago after our weekly DnD session on of our players said he bought a role-playing game called FENG SHUI (or something liek that), and asked if we wanted to play. So we each created characters in like 2 mins each and we were off, i was a martial artist who has a katana that eats souls, i dont like soul eating swords, but im obliged to keep it as a promise. And i work at this restaurant and as a battle ensues in thsi restaurant the floors get all bloody, so i walk into the kictchen and come out with a mop and pail. Well i break the mop in half and clean the floor and impale this one guy with the other half simultaniously. |
| friedmad10-03-04, 10:20 PM | I once played a half-ogre fighter. Our party was surprised by a pack of gnolls, half of which were hiding behind a turned-up table and shooting at us from cover. I ran, kicked over of the table on top of them and started jumping up and down on it. Needless to say, I had gnoll jelly with my toast the next morning.... |
| MortalPlague10-04-04, 01:26 AM | I once played a half-ogre fighter. Our party was surprised by a pack of gnolls, half of which were hiding behind a turned-up table and shooting at us from cover. I ran, kicked over of the table on top of them and started jumping up and down on it. Needless to say, I had gnoll jelly with my toast the next morning.... LOL... Very clever :D |
| Vumyan10-04-04, 05:47 PM | My party was fighting shadows, and the elf in the party got taken down. The characters were having a problem with the shadows due to not having a magical weapon. Before he himself turned into a shadow, the question came up, "Aren't elves inherently magical?". The DM said yes, and the barbarian picked up the elf and began attacking the shadows with him. |
| Purkake10-05-04, 04:15 PM | A sharpened platium coin with injury poison thrown as a shuriken. Platium because copper, silver and gold have -to hit and damage. So the BBEG was making his big escape and we were all disarmed and too far to grapple/trip him. But i remembered my "special" coin and threw it. A crit and a failed fort save later he was as dead as a doornail. Needless to say it became my lucky coin. Another time we were fighting a werewolf and had no silver weapons, but I(rogue) had stolen a set of expensive tableware that included some silver forks. So with the whole party armed with forks we killed the poor werewolf. Also there is nothing like a snowball fight with the enemy. |
| Reinsuoknera10-05-04, 04:26 PM | Once when ambushed while we were cooking in our camp my Dwarf splattered a foe with a pan full of piping-hot fudge that I had almost finished heating. |
| SubZippo10-05-04, 11:16 PM | Not a weapon, but one time my Ranger had just finished off some Orcs on one side of a rushing river. Some other orc archers open fire on him from the other side. I have no shield, so I pick up one of the fallen Orcs, and use him as a human shield as I back off. |
| Shard of Suzail10-05-04, 11:34 PM | Though not a d and d game, it does apply. We were playing a Shadowrun game and were attending a party in Hawaii on the beach. We didnt have our guns and these gang types charged on in trying to shoot the place up. We grabbed a selection of fruits from the food trolley and proceeded to use them to great effect as both close combat and thrown weapons. So impressed was i by the usefulness of this potential weapon type, that i actually bought the improvised weapon skill, specialising in fruit. It came in surprisingly handy and i recommend it for D and D also. |
| Canadian_Samurai10-07-04, 06:07 PM | Well, almost 12 years ago, another fighter and me, a swashbuckler, ended up in prison. As a swashbuckler, I was a total womanizer and one day, I slept with a very beautiful woman...but only one problem, she was married with the captain of the city guards! So during intercourse he entered the room. HE was ****** off!!! All he wanted was to strangle me. So I rose up and start running across the chamber, naked, dodging him, telling him the usual "Its not what you think!" Then, I jump by the window and ended up lying on the street, naked, surrounded by guards! The Captain came down and had me arrested! A member of our group saw that, and tried to plea for my cause and they arrested him too! So in prison, we managed to get the keys from a guard and open our cell, but other guards had seen us and started to chase us! We ran in the guards quarters and ended up in the kitchen. We turned tables upside down for pertection ans started to throw plates at the guards...lots of plates! So we knocked some guards out and escaped bashing with table legs! |
| Orion Polaris10-07-04, 08:47 PM | The only thing I can remember is when my Barbarian threw a Vampires Coffin at the Vampire. Coffin splintered, and one of the wooden splinters went flying through the Vamps' heart. lol. |
| Zilred10-07-04, 09:24 PM | I can remember my 18 STR fighter considering using an anvil as a weapon. Personally, it would have been cool if I could have made it a flaming anvil and hurl it like a blazing comet at the enemy. I think the most that was done with it though was dropping it on some goblins beneath us. |
| Starsword10-07-04, 10:09 PM | We were fighting a dragon, and one of my party members pulled out this baby... BOOM 10d10 damage... how does it feel to be hit by a tower, sucker? DMG p254 if you're interested. |
| TJMHPH10-07-04, 10:11 PM | not that i have used but 2 confused giants fighting. one used a fork the other a spoon. the one with the spoon got a nat 20, nat 20, nat 20 auto kill on the one using a fork. the one with the spoon went through the one with the forks eye straight into the brain. |
| Malkavian^C^10-12-04, 12:27 AM | We were fighting a Dracolich, forget which level, but in the state my party was in (disarray) it would have probably stomped us all. I was playing a drow sorc, forget the other players. At any rate, someone pulls out a scroll of Wall of Iron and, long story short, let me just say that a hundred tons of iron falling on a dragon (Forget the spell, but lots of wind plus throwing a few characters at the wall) makes an unforgettable sound :D Our DM was ******... |
