Best Race/Template for Cleric? (ECL 4 or less) [Archive] - Wizards Community

03-13-07, 09:45 PM Hi Everyone,

Looking for a good race and/or template for a cleric. Can not go over ECL 4. I'm looking for a race/template that greatly enhances their healing and/or ability to protect/increase other party members abilities and so forth. I am not interested in Goliath clerics, or other strong combat oriented races/templates. Something with Spell-like/Supernatural/Extradionary abilities to off set the level hit I would be taking so I can still keep the party up and buff them or something similar would be nice. Do not want to take a 4 level hit for +6 to wisdom as I am VERY focused on healing/buffing other party members and through them keeping myself protected/alive. Please do not suggest alternative classes such as healer or dragon shaman, I'm playing a cleric :). Thanks in advance!

03-13-07, 09:47 PM Unless you're getting the template for free, nothing beats a human. Clerics are feat starved.

03-13-07, 09:52 PM Lesser Aasimar (Player's Guide to Faerun page 190 or so). +2 WIS and CHA, spell-like ability, resistances, for +0 LA.

03-13-07, 11:45 PM In a low stat world, the regular LA+1 Aasimar is barely acceptable. If you are stuck with the "elite array" those two +2's in the right stats are pretty nice.

Otherwise, you do not want any LA with spellcasters. Human.

03-14-07, 12:59 AM I third human. There is almost nothing worth giving up spellcasting progression for. On the other hand, humans give you a free feat and skill points (which is another thing clerics are starved for).

03-14-07, 01:34 AM if you get to use the level adjustment buyoff from Unearthed Arcana I would say find something with a +2, buy it off at 6 and 9

What sources are allowed? The advanced bestiary has a "Celestial blessed" template and the Astral Deva is a +2 and it gives +2 to all stats and a couple of other things.

If you really want a +4 there's a savant templete with +10 Int, +6 Wis -2 Str, Dex, Con and -4 Cha plus a couple of there things

There's a neat seasonal template too

There's a time seer with a +4 wis -2 cha a couple of spelllike abilties and great abilities for a +1 LA I really like this one.

I would like to check out the Time seer and few other of the templates/races that Andrew mentioned..any clues as to where they can be found? As far as sources only DND Core, no Faerun/Eberron but all the other WoTC titles (no D20).

If it's Core only, then you'll have trouble getting the Time Seer template as it's from the Advanced Bestiary by Green Ronin.

03-14-07, 05:41 PM Yeah, looking at a human most likely unless DM lets me space out the 4,000 exp hit over 10 levels. I'll look at Asamir though. Thanks much!

03-17-07, 12:57 AM It looks like you have pretty much made up your mind. I would go for Human as well. The bonus feat and skill points are huge for a Cleric. If you want to play a healer/buffer feats are your friend. I would look into Augment Healing (CD) and Sacred Healing (PHB2). Both great feats for a healer. Both allow you to make the most out of each healing spell you cast.

As a human I would suggest the following feats for your fourth level cleric.
-Combat Casting you know it'll come up
-Skill focus Concentration helps with casting defensively
-Augment Healing adds to your healing
and once you get around to it Sacred Healing as it stacks with Augment Healing.
