| Unknown SSJ04-16-05, 03:27 PM | My character is a chaotic/neutral Cleric of the Gnome race. My diety is Thanos, the god of destruction. Everytime a say that I pray to my god to do something, the DM says that Thanos doesn't care about me. What am I to do? I can't really destroy anything in his name I don't have very destructive spells. I want to construct a temple to my god but I haven't got a clue of what to do. :weep: Please help! I've just started playing D&D. |
| Unknown SSJ04-16-05, 05:06 PM | Great... No one wants to help me... |
| Kash Darreder04-16-05, 05:22 PM | Great... No one wants to help me... Patience is a virtue, even here young one. Advice: Starte putting rocks on top of one another, or pay other to do so. When you have a structure you like, hire some other priests of your faith to tend to it. TADAAA one fine temple. Kd |
| Unknown SSJ04-16-05, 05:28 PM | Just put stones on top of each other to make small structure eh? What could I destroy in the name of Thanos? I don't have destructive spells and my attack power is nothing special. I can't even summon anything big. |
| guru789204-16-05, 05:30 PM | i say hire someone call them the "project leader" and give him tons of money to do it. they do that in corporations all the time. OR! you could hire a brigand or mercanary force with sieg weapons... then you storm a temple that is an enemy of thanos, set it aflame, and bombard it with teh artillery just enough to break some holes in the wall. 2 days latter you'll have a nice destroyed temple for your deity... he has to love you after that. |
| Unknown SSJ04-16-05, 05:37 PM | I would love to destroy another temple to please him. Thing is, I don't have a whole lot of money to do that. Besides, there are a lot of "good" people in the game and so I don't think that they would be too happy If I asked them to build a temple to the god of destruction. btw, How much would all that cost anyway? I'm guessing it would be quite expensive. |
| fatal error04-16-05, 05:40 PM | either this is a troll/joke. Or this is absolutely absurd GMing... |
| Unknown SSJ04-16-05, 05:46 PM | I've only just joined this site today. Should I not have asked this question here? If so, then I apologize. Where does this topic go then? |
| fatal error04-16-05, 05:50 PM | Ok, assuming this isn't a troll. What does your DM saying "thanos doesn't like you" actually do? Do you not get spells to cast? If so just switch deities or tell the DM he's an idiot and should let cleric players have spells. |
| Unknown SSJ04-16-05, 06:01 PM | Ok, assuming this isn't a troll. What does your DM saying "thanos doesn't like you" actually do? Do you not get spells to cast? If so just switch deities or tell the DM he's an idiot and should let cleric players have spells. I don't mean that. I have spells and all that. When ever I pray to Thanos to actually help me or destroy something, my DM just says, "you mean nothing to him because you haven't destroyed anything." I then asked him what I could do to please him besides destroy things because I have no powerful spells at my fingertips. He suggests that I make a temple to please him and so here I am asking for advice. |
| wordserpent04-16-05, 06:06 PM | I think that you are in the right place SSJ. Building a temple, stronghold or any other kind of structure is difficult for a low level character to do. Especially when he has a god who is not popular with the general public. My advice to you is to work with your party and curb your character's evil nature as best you can. Try having him destroy things that the majority of people wouldn't miss, say a bandit stronghold or the lair of some fierce monster. Try to do something notable and the general public will be more likely to trust you. Bear in mind, your character also needs to gain levels too. He need to increase his power through experience so that he can have access to those destructive spells like flamestrike and earthquake. Once he starts committing acts of mass destruction Thanos will be more pleased with your character and he can start building a power base. After 10th level or so your character will probably have enough money to build a shrine or even a small temple. Start small and work your way up. Since Thanos might be an unpopular god with the masses, consider placing your shrine or temple in an out of the way or hidden spot. Being an evil character is not easy. In order to gain levels you will have to do some underhanded stuff so as not to anger any good players that the DM might favor. So cover your tracks and don't do anything blatantly destructive unless you can get away with it. Finally: a temple should have a congregation. Have your gnome put his "feelers" out and look for people who might sympathize with his cause. Getting a congregation to donate money for a temple is a lot easier than paying for the whole thing yourself, in fact most churches in the real world are built this way (just as an aside: I would NOT recommend you asking the pastor of your local church on how to secure converts for Thanos). To summarize: Adventure a lot and gain experience, Save your gold, be subtle when you do evil deeds and gain converts to your gods faith who can help ease the monetary burden of spreading destruction throughout the realms. |
| Unknown SSJ04-16-05, 06:16 PM | Thank you very much. That really helps! I have tried to gain converts but a bolt of lightening just struck me down to 1 hp and when I looked up a cloud was giving me "the finger". I will try and convert some from towns that don't actually have a diety. I am only at level 3 at the moment and so I have some battling to do. btw, My party has a home. Could I use that in any way? |
| allenchan04-16-05, 06:48 PM | Your DM sounds like a complete and total idiot. You shouldnt be able to cast spells if your diety doesn't care about you. Thus, your DM is a contradiction. Lightning bolts? Here's an idea, find another group, and make your DM come to these boards so he can learn a thing or two. |

| d00m_b4b00n04-16-05, 09:38 PM | Most DnD towns are very similar to medieval towns. That is narrow streets, close packed houses and thatched roofs waterproofed with tar. Just toss a vial of alchemist's fire over your shoulder the next time you leave town, that should be destructive enough... Or if that's intolerable then start your destruction small. The next time you get an "art object" as part of some treasure make sure you get hold of it. Paint a holy symbol of Thanos on a nearby wall, lay the object in front of it, burn 1gp of insense, say a prayer to Thanos on your knees and then take your weapon and smash that beautiful art object into unrecognisable pieces and scatter them to the wind. Do this every time you get an art object and I'm sure the DM will get the idea. Every time you leave a Kobold warren collapse the roof behind you by chopping the roof supports partway through and then setting a small fire underneath them. You can tell the paladin that it prevents this place from ever again becoming a nest of foul evil, let the DM know otherwise. Burn down every orc camp you come across, and make sure that the fire spreads to the dry grass of the plains or the surrounding woodlands. If you're looking for something bigger to sacrifice then try Golems or artificers, these are antithesis to your beliefs. Also master craftsmen, artists, and performers; the plus side of these is a 5-6th level expert is much easier to kidnap than a 5-6th level wizard or artificier and is mush less likely to have adventurer friends who can use magic to track you down and squash you. The best thing ever would be to burn down a big library as it is both an enormous amount of stored time and painstaking work, and dedicated to the PRESERVATION of knolege. An art gallery would be good too, as would any kind of factory or court-house. Destruction of the unique or the irreplacable will be looked upon more warmly than that of the commonplace. This is why you do not go around stabbing strangers just to destroy life, there will always be more people. Look for converts amoung the beggars and the debtors and the disposessed and the vengeful. People who have little to lose and who are envious of the status and position of others, an anti-aristocratic mob will often smash up a mansion for the pleasure of breaking things. Look particularly for vandals and deliquents. Remember Thanos is god of destruction don't BUILD a temple. A good place to hold services would be ruins, the greater and grander the better. Even better would be to burn down a new building every couple of months and hold services in the ashes in the dead of night. It would be worth taking the leadership feat when you hit 6th level, then you can get someone decent to head your congregation and expand the church while you're off with the party. It also means that you can tell him to commit vile acts for you and so slow your acquisition of the evil alignment so you don't ping on the paladin's radar. edit: By the way is Thanos homebrewed? I haven't been able to find him by searching the internet...if so then you have been given a boon in disguise. There is very little in this world more terrible than a cleric with a homebrewed god... |
| Marcus Majarra04-17-05, 12:14 AM | Allow me to suggest an out-of-the-box alternative to constructing a temple. Keep in mind that this is a one-way ticket to an evil alignment, so adopt this course of action at your own risk. If you can cast 2nd-level spells, you're all set. Having the Destruction domain helps, but it's not a prerequisite, since you can normally cast the Shatter spell. Concoct yourself a small ritual during which you cast the Shatter spell on an object that someone you see as an enemy to your god is attached to. This alone should get you back into your god's graces until you have the sufficient casting ability to unleash spells of raw destruction. Still, destruction can come in many forms, and it doesn't have to be material destruction all the time. Put your gnomish trickster nature to good use, and get the enemies of your god to fight amongst themselves and destroy one another. Since you have diplomacy as a class skill, you can use it to get on your targets' good sides, and then make use of all the low-level enchantment spells you can think of to help you deceive these peoples and flare up their anger about your other targets. You can even plant the remains from your little Shatter rituals (see above) inside a rival's base of operations, and direct your newfound "friends" towards the perpetrators. Think outside the box. |
| RogerWilco04-17-05, 05:15 AM | 1) Constructing a temple for a god of destruction seems odd to me. Find something that's been destroyed (some ruin) and build an altar there, voila, a place of worship to your god. (altar = piled up stones) Call it a shrine. 2) You're CN, not CE, destroying random things is against your alignment, destroying something to restore some kind of balance is the way to go. The biuld a new house -> burn the old one. 3) Become a pyromaniac, you'll only need a box of tindertwigs and maybe some alchemists fire. there's all the destruction you need. 4) You're only level 3, start small. 5) With your alignment you don't realy need to actively destroy everything IMHO, but you should seek out destruction events. Volcanoes, floods, war, demolishon of old buildings, fires, tornado's: You don't sleep in the Inn, but outside the firebrigade's housing. You want to visit the closest volcano, to erect a shrine for you god at the site of that town now buried beneath lava/ash. Find out if there's something like tornado alley in your DM's world, ask every NPC you meet. |
| Unknown SSJ04-17-05, 09:35 AM | Thanks guys. These are some really good pointers. My DM will be suprised now that I actually know these things. btw, Thanos is the Gnome god of destruction. To my knowlege, he is not homebrewed. |
| d00m_b4b00n04-17-05, 10:24 AM | could you tell me where you found him, he does sound like an interesting fellow to follow.... |
| Unknown SSJ04-17-05, 11:20 AM | I couldn't actually tell you that. I don't know where he is from. My DM gave me a list of gods to choose from and I chose Thanos. Talk to prometheous. He will know where he is from because he is my DM. EDIT: Wait, I think I might be getting the god's name wrong. It may be Thalos or Talos... Something like that... I know he is the god of destruction. |
| VirgilCaine04-17-05, 03:42 PM | 4) You're only level 3, start small. So do that. Take a day off, find an axe and some flint and steel, and have a prayer session. Find a tree somewhere, cut it down, chop the tree into logs, and start a bonfire. Pray before the fire to Thanos, consecrating the act to Thanos. Marcus Majera has some good ideas. |
