A DM I know wants to start a campaign based on the idea that you get to play whatever you've always wanted to but have always been told no. The more bizarre the better. If I want to I can be a Winged, Awakened, Anthropomorphic, Amphibious, Multiheaded Octopus. As long as whatever I come up with is somehwere around ECL 12. So I got to thinking while looking at my options that this is gonna be a hard choice :D

So any thoughts on what I should try? Only rules are it has to be around ECL 12, the freakier the better.

well, a couple demons have about ECL 12. i know the succubus does (male would be incubus), but i'm not sure what the others like the vrock are. then there's also a troll. ah, the troll. my best buddy. they start at ECL 11. or you could have a gagroyle with a couple levels in barbarian or fighter or something, or maybe even a minotaur. if you have the savage species book, you can screw around with these already existing creatures with the feral, reptilian, or insectile templates.

that's my two cents

:cookie: for me!

A lich? A Mindflayer? A Beholder?
Why choose? A Mindwitness Alhoon :D

and if you wanted something absolutly breathtakingly freakish, i suggest coming up with your own critter or template. there's nothing better than ripping some random monster's head off with a claw you created.

I did suggest a Pixie/Barbarian/Frenzied Berserker and he said okay.

I'm not actually gonna do it though. That would just be evil.

1)Tauric Xeph/Cheetah, Shadow Creature, Feral. ECL: 4+2+1+2=9.
Add a few Levels of Monk, 1st Barbarian, and a ToB Class, and go for "tornado throw" manouver ^_^ The only reason to have much STR is so you can carry a medium sized female person. "Hey there hon. Rides are free for such a beauty. Get aboard."

2) Try an awakened Cat, make it a psion, or add levels of pyrocineticist. It doesn't have to be able to speak, just burn down things.

3) Two words: half tarrasque.

4) Awakened Winged Half-Janni Catfolk Skeleton. ECL: HD+8
Make it an Archer. Looks like an ordinary catfolk skeleton with skeletal nonfuctional wings. But with up to 32 dex. And if you ask nicely, your two "Improved Initiative" stack for "greater initiative" (+6)

5) Kobold. ^_^ Take your standard kobold, and add templates so long, until you reach ECL 13. That's a LOT of templates.
(half-dragon half-fiend mineral creature feral Kobold, anyone? STR +22 ^_^)

Weird doesnt have to be a powergamer template unless thats the game your playing :)

If someone told me to make a 'wierd' character today...

It would be one of these..
A woman who is pregnant (could be any class i guess)
A neanderthal who was woken from a very long an unusual hibernation (Likely a strong fighter, but with limited language)
A blind woman (Druid or Wizard would be most interesting i think)
An escaped criminal (some combination of fighter+rogue)

Id probably pick the blind woman. :)

I am not the most up to date on what monsters exist so if anyone could reccomend something based on this it would be greatly appreciated.

Be something that can change its form; preferably at will.

Change. A lot. For no reason other than you feel like it.

Once you factor in its monster levels be levl 1 in as many classes as possible.

Keep the classes unrelated (so don't make a rouge/bard/ninja.)

Be C-N and be insane.

Have fun.

A fairy - tinkerbell type rather than pixie... With a vampire template added. Whatever is left of the ECL filled up with spellthief, rogue, or bard levels.

A popcan-sized little flying bloodsucker is really the only 'out there' character I've ever wanted to play. Just for the in character comments that could be made.

A half-angelic, half-demonic parakeet familar for one of the spellcasters in the party.
IceFractal

06-11-07, 03:12 AM
Kobold or Goblin Ghost - you are the avenging spirit of every weak mook slain by adventurers on their way to the treasure.

Fun concept, gives you a goal to start with (either flat out slay, or alternately outdo and embarass adventurers, depending on the rest of the party), and Ghost is more fun than a barrel of fiendish monkeys. For Ghost powers, Malevolence and Telekinesis are the most fun - you can juggle flaming cartwheels while possessing your foes and making them dance.

Classwise, the big LA can be a problem for spellcasters, and your lack of corporeality may hinder you as a warrior. That's why I favor Rogue - sneak attack works no matter what body and attack method you're using (fun with TK), and skills are always a good thing. Bard could work too, for much the same reasons (high Bluff+possession = fun, and illusions+TK is works well).

I'd play an awakened ferret wizard with an orc (half-orc if you must, though troll would also be nice) improved familiar. Dress up your familiar as a wizard. Have the DM allow it to look like your familiar is casting. Or take spell-linked familiar if you must. Watch the look on your foes' faces when they think they're facing a troll wizard. Invest in a headband of intelligence for it.

Neanderthal (base race - Frostburn) + Lycanthrope (Were-Deinonychus +7/ MM) + Half (*)Dragon (+3 / MM) + Lolth-Touched (+1/ MM4) + Barbarian 1

*As to Half what kind of Dragon, I would suggest Something Exotic, perhaps an Abyssal Dragon; Alternately Shadow or Fang would be good backups. Especially Fang.

The templates pretty much have to go on in the order I laid out. We will call him Ned for this example.

//FLUFF//
Ned was descended from a line of prehistoric Neanderthals. His grandparents were infected with Lycanthropy via a Were-Deinonychus. They bred true and had a child, a true Lycanthrope, Ned's Mom. Ned's Dad was a Fang Dragon who well.. "met" Ned's mom and however those things happen in D&D, Ned was born. Prior to his birth however, minions of Lolth receiving a prophetic vision from their goddess, met with Ned's mom. They then conducted a dark and unholy ritual on Ned while still unborn. The child was Touched by the pure evil of Lolth and was born into the world an unholy killing machine dedicated to serving the Queen of the Demonweb.

//CRUNCH//
I can't give you actual stats right now. I can come back later crunch hardcore numbers, but it will work out *something* like this:
This is of course, just stat bonuses, not actually including the base stats.
~+26STR, ~+10DEX, ~+18CON and no significant penalties (and maybe a bonus or two) to mental stats.
You will have Pounce as a Racial ability, so you won't need to give up Fast Movement for it. Alternately you could take Scout and go for Skirmish damage. You would be getting Claw rake +2 claws +Bite each getting Skirmish. Also, you would have 4 racial hit dice from were-raptor, each of which is upgraded thanks to half-dragon.

Nezumi Wererat with the Vermin Lord prc.

Or better yet, an awakened rat Were-rat.

You become a super-sain rat with the Hivemind ability. If you can gain the Swarm subtype somehow (and therefore gain free hivemind abilities), more power to ya.

And if I may make a sugestion for your deity, Ojike-Chan the Rat Lord (Nuetral Demi-god). His domains are Vermin, Nature, and Secrets. His favored weapon is his Bite (or any natural weapon).

A DM I know wants to start a campaign based on the idea that you get to play whatever you've always wanted to but have always been told no. . .

I'm jealous. This sort of happened to me once, but it backfired on both me and the DM.

The DM said we could do (almost) whatever we wanted. Including using material from other D20 sources (D20 modern, D20 future).

I made a ferral, half dragon, dwarf. He had wings, huge claws, and a whole bunch of mutations from D20-future, including many energy resistances. He had a bionic skeleton, and a bunch of cybernetic implants. His weapons of choice were his claws, followed closely by his death ray. I gave him a whole bunch of feats related to grappling, fighting with natural weapons, aerial combat, and aerial movement. He could use a fly by attack to hit 5 guys at once. Or he could pick up anybody who weighed less than a mack truck, fly 200 feet straight up into the air, and drop them. All in a single round. He was so super freaking awsome. It was great.

The other PCs in the party chose to play: human monk, orc fighter, human rogue, human ranger.

Wow.

I got to play my uber character for about 4 games. Then he had to be retired because everybody else in the party was such a useless glob of flesh next to this guy that there was litterally zero semblance of party balance.

So my advice to you is this: before you make your bizaro uber character, talk to the other PCs. Make sure you guys are on the same page and that your space gorrila octopus man is going to fit into the party. Both mechanically, and from an RP persepctive.

Wait, are you trying to help him make a Skaven from warhammer? Heh.

I'd say a weird one would be.. Hmm... How about a human pirate with a peg leg, hook for a hand, and an eyepatch, with animate object cast on each item? (Isn't there an awaken object spell or something like that? Or is that just living creatures?)

Oh, and the most sinster spell ever, a Living Spell Floating Disk!

Wait, are you trying to help him make a Skaven from warhammer? Heh.
Nope, I'm just modeling it after my player deity. Hes a rat swarm Vermin Lord, and therefore gains sorceror spellcasting ability and free feats just for having hp. After casting Creeping Doom a few times his caster level becomes completely broken and overcomes almost anything's spell resistance.

For more fun with living body parts, I'd suggests the living armor and weapons from the Eberron setting. They count as creatures, so you can add templates to them, too.

Nope. Every character he has ever played has been a halfling since they were available in DND. He still has a halfling army for Warhamer. he says playing them is a challenge. Personally I only think the particular way he plays them is a challenge.

Nope, he'll be the smart guy. The one that realise that in a game like that, if you really want a unique character. One that stands out against the backdrop of 'spuchal snowflake' characters. The half-this/half-that/half-something else- never mind that it comes out as 150%, with a minimum of 4 templates added, tenticles, wings and 14 PrCs characters.

Will be the just plain straight out of the PHB with no weirdo-additions one.

And one kobold warlock.

More like Orgasm! haha

Took me a second to come up with something outlandish, but here goes:

A Winged Insectile Half-Troll Half-Vampire Draconic Incarnate Construct Furitive Filcher Necropolitain Rogue lvl 2.

Total ECL 12!

winged: SS p 138
Insectile SS p122
Half-Troll FF p92
Half-Vampire LM p106
Draconic RotD p74
Incarnate Construct SS p120
Furitive Filcher ECS p286
Necropolitain LM p114

The Incarnate Construct actually nets a -2LA/min 0LA... so the creature really has +11LA, but I get to minus 2. so I added 2 levels rogue.

Alternatively I could use awaken contruct spell on it instead.

Anyways, enjoy. I'll try to come up with something more bastardised later.

You know, I'd be wary of templates. Past a low LA, they usually just weaken a character terribly. For example, what was just posted has... 2 HD? It doesn't matter how great your abilities are, you still die in one hit at that level. And in that case, how are you getting Incarnate Construct - that can only be applied to constructs, and I don't see any constructs in there.

How about this for an idea: a man (elf, halfling, whatever) who steals other people's life force, distills it, and lets it soak into his cigarettes (pipe tobacco, tobacco subsititue, whatever). Think of the tagline: "Some people smoke their lives away. I smoke other people's lives instead." Not certain how you'd build it mechanically, but you could probably find a way, even if it was just using Soul Eater (BoVD) and some fluff about the distilling/smoking.

Alternately, I suppose there's always the anthropomorphic giant squid with the Soul Eater PrC. But that's pretty cliche.
User5127

Furitive filcher is a 1 HD construct from the eberron campaign setting. It is Tiny.

So it really has 3HD... But I don't care about the HD part. I'm jsut amused as hell by the long name. I took me a deep breath just to read it out.

And the fact that I just made an undead construct. heh...

this guy is deffinatly not a frontline fighter.. He's really fast and sneaky. land speed of 50. climb 50, fly perfect 70. has an insane dex score. and (though I haven't crunched the numbers to much) a pretty retarded AC. I just remembered a couple of good ones that have been done before. But they're still good.

1) Male drow elf paladin. In pink armor. Yes, he is gay. This one could be objectionable though. Check if it's fine.
2) Half-giant (or similar) stoneblessed dwarf focused on heavy armor. In walks what appears to be an iron golem. It takes off its head - oh wait, it's a helmet - and inside there appears to be a stone golem. Even better if you get it to be undead and allow it take off the stone head to have a flesh golem inside.

Or try this: a fire element/half fire elemental minotaur. Name him Steak-Um. Or BBQ (short for Brak-Bregon Quorsnort or something).

Heh, that second one was from one of my groups...

First Meeting
DM: You all arrive at the castle at about the same time, coming from different directions. First, there is a massive, probably the largest any of you have ever seen, hound archon. She is clad in gleaming full plate bearing the holy symbol of Pelor, and carries a warhammer seemingly made out of pure light. Next is a... cat person, carrying a greatsword that looks as if it weighs two pounds. It looks like he could walk faster than most people run. Finally, with booming steps approaches what looks like a giant iron golem, greatsword on back.
Belton: (OOC) I take off my helmet.
DM:The iron golem removes what you now know as a his helmet, and inside is what looks like a... stone golem!
ThiLynn: (OOC) Ooh, I bet if we take off his head we'll find a flesh golem inside, like those Russian dolls!

Anyways, as for my suggestions:

Iknow. I did a much better one for the epic boards for a crazy minotaur that was better than his CR indicated. it was pretty funny.

Sadly though, monster HD count as levels for PCs and not for NPCs... kinda like big monsters have like 40HD but are CR15.

Flavour text (some of it): Take a lycanthrope troll and have it mate with a greathorn minotaur. Use magic ritual to give the newborn the winged, insectile, and paragon templates. You now have a Brutus.

his CR was 27, but I felt it should have been higher as he had way more HP than any CR27 I could find and more AC as well as a really insanely high attack bonus... It was pretty fun to make though. haha

Of all the things I want to play, I think the Drider Rogue is the most bizarre.

Either that, or a Dwarf Bard with low charisma.

How about a vampire illithid. Psionics, brain sucking, blood draining, spell resistance and a few levels of wizard just to add some spice

Only have ECL 12. I think I might be able to play a plain illithid with no class levels tho........

If I make one I shall call him Binky! :D

Check out the Vampiric Mind Flayer from Lords of Madness. :D It doesnīt have many typical vampire abilities, basically just Blood- and Energy Drain, Fast Healing, DR and Resistances. Nice Strength and Dexterity scores though (18+) but low Int.

Itīs HD is 8, and the total ECL shouldnīt be too far above 12, I think (none is given in the book, but meh).

Heh, that second one was from one of my groups...

Anyways, as for my suggestions:
Insectile Goblin
Winged Thri-Kreen
Half-Fiend Ogre
Draconic Changeling

Good to know its creator found it. I love Belton. I've just gotta see that character make it to play in one of my games.

wait, wait....

Necropolitain Socerer Swarm Shifter.
(no idea about the LA for Swarm Shifter though)

Now you can get a hive mind in swarm form.. ummm... sh*t?
(some one on the CO boards did stats for a retarded swam with hive mind...)

EDIT: pick the Swarm of Undead Sand. You are now a 10 foot spaced creature made up of thousands of sand particles with a hive mind. congrats, you just broke the game.)

Half-celestial Drow Bard.

Well it looks like the other players decided to go with heavy optimization as well, so I repeated the question on the CO boards.

Needlefolk might be neat if it werent for the "immediately detect all elves within 1500 feet and move to kill them" thingie.

Llama Barbarian!

A llama barbarian would be pretty funny too.

Semi-seriously though, find a picture of a Lumi; then imagine it with multiple heads; imagine all of those heads spinning around or whatever they'd do in a crazy rage.

The only thing I'm unsure of is whether you can put the multiheaded template on a Lumi.

go with the swarm idea. if theyt are heavy optimized this will provide hjilarious results. and i'm sure they will cry. :evillaugh

EDIT: Also: a swarm of fine sized maggots or sand would be at least 10,000 individuals parts. As such you would have the following traits in swarm form:

207 INT
202 CHA

lvl 184 Sor
+98 bonus on skills
+98 feats

Something to that degree. I got the number 10,000 from the MM description on the Swarm subtype in the glossary.

The best idea I've had for a high level character so far is a Dwarf Dwarven Defender / Dervish. Wear some Mountain Plate, and be a wall for a little bit. Get some enhancement so you an remove it really quickly, then bust out with you're mithral breastplate and double scimitars... Can you say, "WTF?"

I think you'r DM will HAVE to ban the undead swarm thing. Since it's almost as bad as playing pun pun.

the idea that a lvl 12 can suddenly jump to a lvl 184+... that's retarded.

I'd still like to see somebody play Lumi Barbarian sometime; heck, maybe that will be my next character. The Lumi entry already states that they have an extreme hatred for lying and dishonesty, so I think it would be funny to have a character who flipped out and went into a bloody rage when someone told any sort of lie.

Goblin Wizard, 'nuff sid right there.

You want something better?

Do that whole golem-in-golem type-thing mentioned earlier and put it in Clockwork Armor (it's mentioned somwhere on the D&D site). Oh, and find a way to stick a warforged scout inside.

Insectile Thri-keen totemist 6 with permanent Blssings of the Garillion on him. When he binds Garillion Arms, he's got (at least) twelve arms. Add on multi-headed for an additional head, subtract the necessary levels of totemist, and he can use all of them without penalty. Somewhere, I remember seeing a set of armor that had two magical arms built in. Put that on him.

I just started a game like this, it has 5 players... but it is APL 14, they are all level 14 characters, if the races ECL was higher than 14 I creted a savage progression.

We have a
silver dragon
Bralani
Ghaele
half blue dragon Pixie
Human Saint

Take a guess which is becoming clearly the most powerful race after 3 sessions...

I told them make anything, absolutly anything, and the Player that is always asking to play evil characters is the one that choose the saint. I am now seeing her diabolical plot though, saint is the most evil thing I have ever seen in a game.

Don't forget - monk. Like Jackie Chan turned into a huge, demented insectoid beaver. Then again, the tail may be more akin to a roundhouse kick. Chuck Norris turned into a huge, demented insectoid beaver. I've so gotta try this.
