i have this idea for a Aasimar fighter that often uses a few choice spells. the idea i had was giving him the Scribe Scroll feat (perhaps giving him a level in sorcerer) and then using it to engrave spells in his swords. he'd then use the skill for using scrolls in order to invoke the powers in his swords (one for each sword, plus one that can be invoked through both swords, so a total of 3 at any given time). is this a pretty solid idea and does anyone have any advice on how to take off with it? i want him to be a fighter with some more minor spellcasting abilities, but to be able to cast a couple strong spells later on without having to dedicate myself to a magical path that would deter from fighting

take a look at these Prestiege classes:
Eldritch knight (for fighter/casters)
Spellsword (for fighter/casters)
suel arcanamach (this is good if you play straight fighter to qualify, the prestiege gives level 1-5 spells)

As far as scribing scroll on your swords, that's entirely up the the DM, and you are aware that the swords would loose the spell when you cast it (scribed scrolls go blank after casting)

Craft magic arms and armor might be a better idea.

spellsword is in the complete warrior
eldritch knight is in the DMG
suel arcanamach is in the complete arcane (this would be my choice)
10ftr/10suel gives 5th lvl spells, +20 bab and 6 bonus feats I believe.

Suel arcanamach only gets 3/4 BAB progression.

The spellsword seems to be a pretty good choice. It gives the channel spell ability, which allows you to cast spells into a melee weapon that will affect the next target you hit but it will only affect that one target even if it's an area effect spell.

whoops that's what I get for posting late at night while going from memory, it should be 17bab total.

The spellsword does have some nice abilities, though you're going to want to stick to self-buffing spells and single target spells.

One of the downsides with casting things into a weapon to then be released, is that you could just do the whole thing in 1 round with a touch-attack without any special abilities.
Instead you have to use a move action to cast, then take your attack with the remaining standard action, and you have to hit their total AC, not their touch AC.
It's not really worth mentioning as an ability IMHO, except for the one the enlightened fist gets which allows casting as a free action during a full-attack.

If you go with spellsword, I'd suggest keeping it to quickened buff spells, possibly tossing in a couple of fireballs to soften things up a bit.

Actually, let's compare: if you go 4fighter/6wiz/10spellsword your going to end up with 6th level spells, 11th caster level, 17bab, 30% ignore spell failure, and the whole channeling thing. 9/10/13 saves, and 4 bonus feats. (if you do sorcerer instead, you're only getting 5th lvl spells, tensers transformation is 6th level)

for Fighter10/Suel Arcanamach10 you get: 5th level spells, 10th caster level, 17bab, 20% ignore spell failure, extended self-buff duration, dispelling strike 3/day, 10/10/10 saves, 6 bonus feats, and DC +6 to dispell anything you cast.
Plus you get charisma as a casting stat, which IMHO is a better casting stat, and spontaneous casting.

The downside is the 4tumble and 5spellcraft ranks required for entry.
meaning waiting till 7th level fighter and burning 2skill pts/lvl into cc skills, unless you add them as class skills somehow. You're going to need at least 12 int to do this with an aasimar.
Also you only have access to Abj, Div, Illu, Trans schools. (buff spells are generally trans/abj)

Whichever one you choose, I suggest taking Practiced spellcaster, as it adds +4 caster level (only for spell effects, not spells avialable or castable) to a maximum of your HD.

Also get arcane strike. You don't really need 10 levels of spellsword. The spell channel ability isn't really useful during combat. It lasts for 8 hours so you can cast it before a fight. Depending on the amount of armor you want to wear you could have something like 3 Wizard/4 Fighter/5 Spellsword/8 Eldritch Knight which gives you 5 extra feats, a caster level of 13, spell channel 3 times a day, and ignore spell failure 20% which will allow you to wear some light armor.

well, if we want to narrow things down, how bout asking what would work best for a character who would cast spells THROUGH his weapons? (ill probably look at all the mentioned classes, but thats the general effect im looking for). really, he's mroe combat-oriented, but id like a couple enhancement/damaging spells he could cast through his weapons

Well, the one that comes to mind is whirling blads, and there's a few other sorc/wizard spells that either create or use a held weapon.
Mainly though, spells don't do that kind of thing, since most wizards aren't going to be fighting with a couple of longswords.
Best you're going to get is mabye 5-10 spells that actually utilize your weapons.

Whirling blade is a spell, where you use your weapon to attack people inside an area. (the blade whirls around magically or somesuch)

What exactly are you looking for?

The only prestiege that has class abilities that use magic and swords is the bladesinger.
The bladesinger is mainly for Wizards, and you must be elf or half-elf.

Whirling Blade is a 2nd level Sorceror/Wizard spell from Complete Arcane. Casting it hurls your melee weapon (slashing only), attacking every enemy in a 60 foot line from you at your highest base attack bonus.

Very good spell for a melee/mage combination.
