I was playing game on Tuesday night... using my current character, an 11th level Warlock... The party was doing a dungeon crawl when we finally reach the end.

Boss guy gives his silly monologue and the battle commences.

At around round 3, I unleashed a powered up Maximized Eldritch Blast (12d6, 6d6 base, +2d6 amulet, +4d6 charged Warlock's Scepter) dealing a whooping 72 supernatural damage to our BBEG o' the session. BBEG drops, from mid-air plummeting to the ground (at that point the fight was aerial).

As the session was running late (I had to leave early because of work), the rest of the party was working on cleanup of the weaker enemies, my character flew down to the body of the BBEG.

And as my last act before leaving, I blasted the BBEG for good measure (evil extraplanar demon guy) as I didn't want to take any chances. I knew OOC that he was dead, but I wanted to add a bit of flavor to it... unleashing wrath and whatnot.

Here's where things went awry. DM suddenly says roll damage, I do so, and he says BBEGs gear is taking damage as now it's considered "unattended"... so I call *BS*... I'm using a Ray not a Area of Effect spell. I'm shooting him, not his gear.

So I'm left thinking that I ****** off the DM by nearly one-shotting his BBEG and now he wants to take out some angst on me by having me blow up something valuable on the guy...

So am I wrong for being irritated about this?

Well, your DM is certainly playing fast-and-loose with the rules. As an aimed, weapon-like effect, Eldritch Blast will only deal damage to the object it strikes.

Hey! don't knock it. Your DM just gave you a pressie and upped the power of your eldrich blast. If he wants to rule that eldrish blast is an area effect... that's fine, might come in useful one day when you want to use it as such.

I somehow doubt he'll be letting me AOE with it without Cone/Doom.

The real question to the matter is, should my Ray have instantly translated into damaging gear (as gear wasn't the specific target)? I imagined my character dealing it in a coup de grace style to the face (yay for face melting).

Standard 1st level Eldritch Blast... no Essence or Shape added.

Ok, so I was being a bit flippant :P

No, it shouldn't have. To damage gear he'd have to go by the Sunder rules. Sunder specifies using slashing or bludgoning damage. - Eldrich blast provides niether. Just as you can not attempt to sunder with a piercing weapon.

You can use a melee attack with a slashing or bludgeoning weapon to strike a weapon or shield that your opponent is holding.

You can’t sunder armor worn by another character.

Well, being dead the character seems like it should now be considered an Object. Eldritch Blast deals half damage to objects. My main objection is really in the way the DM decided to have it effect gear (which, since I left, I haven't gotten all the details.. but is not unlikely that all of his gear is destroyed, or at least the most valuable item knowing the DM).

Although the DM is the final rules arbiter, what he did was not in the RAW.

I could sympathize with dmg to what ever is occupying its center body slot. but if an amulet/ring or something small like that which would obviously not get in the way was dmged i would call BS

Sounds to me like the DM is just irked because you killed a favorite BBEG.

Tell him to stop acting like a loser.

Undecided. Could be the Dm feels that you were being a bit overkillish and wanted to make clear the repurcussions. Did any gear actually get destroyed, and if so how much?

If nothing got damaged, write it off to experience.

If you vaped all the goodies, your Dm is a being a b*****d.

...Although, technically, each and every item on him (or any falling character for that matter) should be suffering falling damage. Though I've never known any DM to be cruel enough to enforce THAT little chunk of realism:

"Melgar the Ludicrous takes 62 points of falling damage, gets up, dusts himself, and walks away. But all his weapons and armor were destroyed. Sorry, but even after subtracting hardness and halving it, that's 26 points of damage to all your metal items: 28 to the wooden ones..."

Check my math... but if you did a 12d6 shot... and dealt 72 damage... am I to understand you rolled 12 sixes in a row?

No, he just incorrectly applied Maximize to stuff beyond the base damage.

Aye the maximized should only have been applied to the 6D6
doing 36 + 2D6 + 4D6 dmg

PS: What amulet was that? i could use it :)
