I've had this idea running around in my head for a short bit now, and am wondering if it is viable. for one thing I know I'd be getting a blindfold of true darkness(gives 60 ft blindsight. for the campaign I would bring this character into allows this book) But that limits me to a full rounds movement. Does anyone know any feats or items that would lessen or negate the penalties for being blind?

The only one I can think of would be blindfight.

I don't understand why people want to play a blind character with none of the penalties. :embarrass

edit: I should probably mention that you're going to be flamed for posting this. Just a heads up.

Dear OP if you do want to play a blind PC please do so without the blindfold/cheating.

What is it with blind samurais anyway. Blindness is not good for your survival and is not kewl.

I half expect it =P
And I want to try a blind samurai for the sheer fun of trying to RP one. I mean after playing each class so many times, I'd figure I'd try a cliched flawed for 2 reasons,1) I'm sure people have done it before thus having some insight. 2) I'm a fan of Zatoichi.

Do you want to play "real blind" or "pretend blind"?

With "real blind", you would take the feats Blind-Fight (phb), Hear the Unseen (complete adventurer), and Quick Reconnoiter (Complete adventurer). I'm sure there are more, but those the ones I can think of off the top of my head. You would need a class with Listen and Spot as a class skill. Please note that you will almost assuredly completely suck at doing anything.

With "Pretend Blind", or "zomg i'm blind lawlz!", you would ask your DM (or demand it) to let you have Blind Sight, at least to a minimum of 15'. This is the kind of blind that you see in movies and anime. This kind of blind is basically like cutting off your legs, and still RUNNING.

Blindness is hardly a flaw when you compensate yourself with something even better than normal sight.

My Paladin is deaf, but has X-ray vision.

My Rogue has no tongue, but this has given him tremorsense.

My Wizard had an alchemy experiment go awry when he was a lad. Now he lacks all olfactory sense. His brain has compensated by giving him Fly (1/day) as the spell.

I know I'm being a jerk, and I apologize if I hurt your feelings. Please don't take the above comments seriously or personally. I'm just feeling a bit ornery today

I have to agree with everyone else.

You want to play someone who is flawed, but you only want to play out this flaw if you have a way of getting rid of it with something equal to, or better than how it complicates things?

'I want to play a deaf Knight, who can hear several times better than other PC's to make up for this horrible flaw!'

I played a monk once and got to start him at level 12. I picked up the blindsight 5 foot radius feat and said I was from an order that insisted the masters of it's arts were to remain blindfolded as it is only by overcoming adversity that we might better ourselves. Should we ever deem we had nothing more to learn we could remove the blindfold, but lose the ability to gain any more levels of monk.
I didn't gain anything from it, just a random restriction I gave myself.

You could make it a part of a similar character progression if you like, as a samurai you could go as far as putting your eyes out so that your enemies have a fair chance.

Remove Blindness, 3rd-level cleric spell.

Enjoy.

I'd like to see more made of this sort of thing.

A character, blind from birth, can't be cured of blindness for some mundane reason. I don't mean "It's a magical curse" or "the gods forbid it" as I see touted out when the Remove Blindness suggestion comes along. I mean just a character who didn't have access to a suitably high level cleric. Perhaps he lived in a small place, perhaps he couldn't afford the casting fee, perhaps he'd heard blindness could be removed but dismissed it as a rumour.

Eventually, he meets a suitable cleric and is cured of his blindness - and thus begins his adventuring career, as he wants to see everything there is to see in the world! He could be a devotee of the deity that cured him - even a cleric himself. Or perhaps a skilled fighter who taught himself while blind (Blind-Fight feat), and is now far far better because he can see again. Or perhaps a Rogue used to doing things by touch and sound (Tactical Trapsmith feat, high Listen ranks), now gifted with sight as well.

Roleplay the joy of sight! Head around remarking on how great everything looks (even the ugly half-orc), praise your deity, go around with Remove Blindness prepared all day just in case you or somebody else should fall back into it.
