| Lednera05-16-07, 06:29 PM | Hi guys I got a question about bonus languages after character creation, I started game play with a 17 Int score and get 3 bonus languages due to it, when i got to level 4 i put my point into Int and it gave me an 18 so do i get another bonus language due to the new +4 ability mod? |
| wal900005-16-07, 06:32 PM | Pretty sure the answer is no, but don't have my PHB on me. You could however spend 2 skill points (or one if you have speak language as a class skill) to learn another language. You also won't gain any extra skill points for previous levels, but after the INT increase you'll get an extra skill point every time you level up. |

You do not suddenly gain new skillpoints and languages from previous points in your life when your intelligence goes up. |
| I_Strahd05-18-07, 02:02 AM | it depends if your dm will allow it. if you have been in some sub-terranian cavern for (four levels) and you tried to converce with them. maybe. but if you have been spending your time on a ship and nowhere near any "sub-terranian" creatures. you would'nt know how to speak the language. unless instructed. i know in real life when i gain four levels i dont all-of-a-sudden know how to make a four layer wedding cake. lol. |
| Archangel_Tyrael05-18-07, 02:57 AM | i know in real life when i gain four levels i dont all-of-a-sudden know how to make a four layer wedding cake. lol. that is probably the single worst analogy I have ever seen... :P i agree with the others, no new languages |
| TMX05-18-07, 03:12 AM | The way I normally work it is that its the number of languages you have the potential to use, without spending skillpoints. So, when they add the extra ability point, the character doesn't instantly know a new language, however, if the oppertunity appears where someone can teach them a new language (i.e. a native speaker who is willing to teach them), they can acquire it that way (providing the teacher is willing (i.e. money) and there is the necessary time available). |
| Grizzled Gryphon05-18-07, 09:39 AM | i know in real life when i gain four levels i dont all-of-a-sudden know how to make a four layer wedding cake. lol. Strange. Every time I gain for levels, I learn something new. Yesterday, I gained four levels, and *poof!* I suddenly know astro-physics. |
| Lednera05-18-07, 04:03 PM | lol, thanks guys I got the stuff working how i want it. found a couple of nifty feats in some of my books that make my character look like a freekin book worm or for you who have seen Stargate SG-1 my character will be a Daniel Jackson knowing 16-17 languages at level 6. Disclaimer: Not sure if I am allowed to do this in the forums but that is why I am doing it in an sblock. Linguist (General) Source: Kingdoms of Kalamar Player's Guide by Kenzer and Company (p. 88) You have a knack for learning languages. Prerequisites: Intelligence 13+ Benefit: When you take this feat you may select a number of languages equal to your intelligence modifier that you now know (in addition to the standard number of languages for intelligence modifier). Effectively, this feat doubles your Int modifier with regards to number of languages. This feat may only be taken during character creation. The DM must approve the languages you choose, assuring that your character had the opportunity to learn that language in his background. Polyglot (General) Source: Kingdoms of Kalamar Player's Guide by Kenzer and Company (p. 90) Prerequisites: Intelligence 13+ Benefits: You may learn languages for 1 skill point each if the new language shares an alphabet with a language you already know. For example, Jisei speaks Elven. He can learn Sylvan, Undercommon, and Aquan at the cost of one skill point each. If he learns Dwarven, it costs the normal 2 points, but he could then learn Gnome and Terran at one point each. Normal: A language costs 2 skill points for all classes except bard (for whom Speak Language is a class skill). Special: Clerics of The Traveler or The Watcher gain Polyglot as a bonus feat. University (Background) Source: Feats by AEG (p. 16) You have attended some of the finest schools in the land, gaining knowledge and insight that few possess. Prerequisites: Intelligence 13+ Benefits: You gain +8 additional skill points at character creation, and +2 skill points every level thereafter. These points may only be put into class skills. Special: This feat can only be chosen at 1st level. You begin play with 100 gp less then normal as a result of your schooling. |
| Nathreet05-18-07, 06:53 PM | New languages cost 2 skill points each. 1 if you are a bard or loremaster. Just spend the 2 skill points. |
