| LichKnight06-07-05, 10:23 PM | I've been a player for about a year know and I own the PHB,MM3,Complete Adventurer, and The races of "The Wild" and "Stone". I am going to buy the MM1 and maby the Arms and Equipment guide, but what elese should i buy? My DM allows me to use anything from any book i own (or he owns) so what is worth buying. |
| Elven Doritos06-07-05, 10:31 PM | Tell us more about your interests in D&D, what kind of content you enjoy in your books. Do you like variant rules and new ideas? Unearthed Arcana might be for you. Do you enjoy a particular class? Try one of the Complete series. If you enjoy poring over countless monster stat blocks (I know I do), then check out any of the Monster Manuals, Monsters of Faerun, or Fiend Folio. As I said, tell us more! EDIT: Also, tell us what setting you play. |
| The Prince Azar06-07-05, 10:34 PM | Fleshing out other creature types, a potential good source for classic D&D monsters would be Draconomicon, Libris Mortis and Lords of Madness as well. |
| LichKnight06-07-05, 10:48 PM | I'm always the heavy hitter in the group... Fighters, Barbarians, sometimes Clarics, Monks, Paladins and (rarly) roges and rangers. I live in a small town and only get to play about once a month. This gives me time to go over my books over and over again, studying different combonations. I don't consider myself a powergamer, and love oprotunitys to roleplay. I love to come up with largescale operations (for instence, currently, i have convinged an eberon king to let me use his money to build airships, and become the leader of the "Royal Air Force") Any books that could help me expand on these things would help. (also, spellcasters are NOT off limits for me at all) |
| Elven Doritos06-07-05, 10:57 PM | Ah, Eberron. Well, I did enjoy the flavor in Races of Eberron, and Sharn: City of Towers was a solid read. As per your melee interests, I would heartily recommend Complete Warrior. It's one of the best of the series, and it has a lot of neat content in it. As for large scale operations---- What could be of a larger scale than war? The recently-released Heroes of Battle may be small for a D&D book, but it's honestly the most enjoyable D&D rulebook I've ever read. It has a lot of fresh ideas, and it's a solid, if sadly short, book. And I can't pimp Unearthed Arcana enough. Great all-purpose book. |
| LichKnight06-07-05, 10:59 PM | thanks alot it seems that unearthed arcana is the thing to buy first, thanks again |
| Ripjak06-08-05, 02:04 AM | Don't forget that Savage Species is a lot of fun if you wanna try the unusual for a character. |
| OpheliaWhispers06-08-05, 03:23 AM | I would get the Complete Warrior and the Complete Adventurer first, if you are into the fighter types. Then get UA. ALL of the "Complete" series are good choices. They give you alternate feats, Prestiege classes, and in the CA some new core classes like "scout". And then there is my favorite, which doesn't sound like it would be yours, but just the same the Manual of the Planes is an interesting read. Just a few thoughts... |
| krichaiushii06-08-05, 07:44 AM | Aside from the Complete series, you might consider branching off into the world of 3d party support. Keep in mind that it can be hit and miss, so be sure to seek out reviews before blindly purchasing something. The Path of ... series from FFG (http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/llsource.html) is something like the Complete series from WotC. As they are slowly leaving the RPG side of gaming, they periodically run $5 sales on their remaining stock, so you can clean up there. Mongoose (http://www.mongoosepublishing.com/d20/index.php) has the entire Quintessential (http://www.mongoosepublishing.com/d20/series.php?qsSeries=8) series. Be leery about some of the mechanics, but you can always lift ideas from these books. Malhavoc (http://www.montecook.com/cgi-bin/page.cgi?products) has the Books of ... (http://www.montecook.com/cgi-bin/page.cgi?products_eldritch) series. Again, another company's take on the Complete series. They also have two alternate PHBs - Arcana Evolved and Iron Lore. Both of these lead to very different games. |
