Our party has recently discovered why the bad guys get the drop on us whatever we do: It's the way the DM runs the shadowplane. We acquired a wand of shadow walk with a couple of charges, and when we tried it we discovered that we could see into the prime material plane for miles, the souls of those living there burn as bright as torches, and also can be seen for miles. Cover is meaningless. It's no good saying that that isn't how shadow walk is supposed to work; this is how the DM has decided to run it in his campaign.

I'm stumped about what our party can do to hide ourselves while adventuring. Is there a spell that masks souls to make them undetectable? My wizard is 10th level, so she can learn up to 5th level spells.

Ask your DM if you can research a spell.

Since he's making stuff up anyway, he should be happy that you are adapting to his campaign world, instead of just complaining.

I'm not complaining, just stating it like it is. I am, however, stumped, and there is no downtime for spell research. The DM keeps the clock ticking, and every day we delay just makes the current situation worse. New spells take 1 week per level to research, and I'm not in a position to spend that kind of time at the moment. I am in a place where I could buy a scroll or two, though, if such a spell already exists. I can see plenty of spells that will allow us to rest safely, but not to go where we need to go or do what we need to do without being automatically detected by our enemies on the shadow plane.

I'm confused how you could see souls shine for miles, what with all the alternate pasts and presents and possible futures that might be happening around you on the Shadow Plane (according to the Manual of the Planes), but if that's the way he wants to play it.

Suggest to the GM that such a spell might already exist, i.e. someone else saw the same problem and researched the spell.

Sorry, I didn't mean to imply that you were complaining. I was actually trying to compliment you on working within the DM's world to find a solution.

As for existing spells... there are precedents for spells that block a particular type of detection.

Non-detection is a stretch, but what about "hide from undead" and "hide from animals"... could easily be adapted to "hide from shadows"

"Undetectable alignment" works by concealing your aura.. it could be adapted as well.

Since your DM is making up a new way of detection, there won't be any pre-designed spells to block it, but it makes sense that you should be able to magically conceal your "life force" from creatures on the shadow plane.

Maybe even an enchanted cloak or something would work.

That's a good idea. There's a good chance that the city our party is currently in will have someone in it that was intelligent enough to already have tackled the problem. That's what I'll suggest to the DM, anyway.

"Undetectable alignment" works by concealing your aura.. it could be adapted as well.

That's another good idea. I'll see if he'll let an existing spell be adapted. Perhaps he might let the cleric or druid pray for an adapted spell in less time than it would take my character to research it.

Thanks for the suggestions :)

Heh, the realm of shadow so bright that the shadows are extinguished.

Agreed. If the Shadow Plane has always worked this way, someone somewhere at some time will have found a spell to counter it. If this is new based on some campaign-related plot point, then he'd best be making with a treasure drop to help compensate at some point. Granted, this may well be some time later in the campaign - but you're 10th Level, fer cryin' out loud!

May i request that you expand on that point? How does a shadow get extinguished? somethings people tend to forget is that darkness is a shadow's enemy, not light. As long as there are objects and light, shadows can exist.

This would imply that if the souls are shedding light then there would need to be some solid objects on the plane to create shadow
