| Turel10-28-07, 06:56 PM | heya guys One of my fellow gamers thinks he has seen an errata for Brilliant Energy weapons. He is under the impression that once made brilliant you can no longer apply your strength modifier to your damage, due to the insubstantial nature of the blade. I cant find anything about it, has anyone seen this ruling? In anycase, does it sound right to you and would you use this rule. |
| Salla10-28-07, 07:37 PM | With brilliant energy often being a hindrance (against undead or constructs, for example), I see no reason to forbid the Strength bonus from applying. The weapon still strikes living targets with appropriate force. |
| Zherog10-28-07, 07:47 PM | Your player is misremembering; no such rule exists. |
| Prator_The_Golden10-28-07, 07:51 PM | The blade is insubstantial, but so what? It's not a lightsaber, and won't cut things by itself. It has to have SOME kind of force behind it when it strikes something, and that force is nothing more than the physical strengthh of the wielder. |

| DrMorganes10-29-07, 09:49 AM | He is under the impression that once made brilliant you can no longer apply your strength modifier to your damage, due to the insubstantial nature of the blade. The rules do not support this assertion. Brilliant Energy weapons have their "significant portion transformed into light, although this does not modify the item’s weight." Nowhere in the enhancement's description does it reference a penalty or negation to STR modifiers. "Insubstantial" carries connotations of incorporeal entities and the Ghost Touch enhancement. Even in this case, however, there is no reduction or negation of STR modifiers. |
| nowiwantmydmg10-29-07, 11:18 AM | That would be the description of the brilliant energy modifier from the 3.0 DMG. |
| Turel10-29-07, 09:34 PM | 3.0 is spot on, the only books this guy owns are the phb 3.0 and the dmg 3.0 He was sure hed seen it written in a Dungeon/Dragon in the sage section, but i'll point him to this thread to clear things up. Thanks guys, this has been niggling at me for aaages. :) |
