Building a character to use my jawsome d8s... [Archive] - Wizards Community

So I'm on a pretty consistent search for the ugliest dice I can get my hands on. In part because I want anyone using my public dice to hate themselves a little more with each roll, and because sometimes, hideous dice are AWESOME.

Some of you may remeber me from my previous quest to build a limbless bard. Today, I'm asking for your help in building a character around d8s.

I've obtained three glittery silver eight-siders, and I want my next character to roll them as much as possible. While I know casters roll 8s for hitdie, I'm not big on roleplaying them. However, if there's a school of magic or specialisation that happens to use alot of 8s, I'll consider it.

I want to roll these hideous monstrocities all the time. I will drastically change my character if it means that down the road it'll let me roll more glittery goodness down the road.

So I guess my main questions are these-

What are the best weapons that roll d8s for damage?
Are there any weapons that roll 2d8 or more? Are there any modifications or effects that let me add d8s to damage?
Are there any items or games that roll d8s to determine the outcome?

Am I missing anything?

Thanks in advance for all of your help.

Longswords and Longbows do d8 damage.

I believe the fullblade from CW does 2d8, though I don't have the book handy just now.

Rangers have d8 HD.

Clerics are completely loaded with d8's. There's healing, of course, Inflicts, Aid, Sound Burst, Searing Light, EDeath Knell, well, maybe not that many, but I daresay you'd be using that d8 quite a lot.

A level 20 Crusader with 20+ Constitution can deal 46d8 damage to a single enemy in one attack before adding weapon damage or other modifiers using Greater Divine Surge.

Of course he'll probably die the turn after... but that's a lot of d8s.

Make him a Ruby Knight Vindicator and utilize WRT/Divine Impetus/Divine Recovery with Restoration spells and you could probably deal hundreds of d8s of damage in a single turn.

You're friends will probably start throwing the d8s back at you at that point though... :)

Greatsword does 2d8, if I remember right.

Also, if something calls for 2d4, 4d4, etc, you should be able to replace that with 1d8 or 2d8, respectively. I would run it past your DM, of course, but I wouldn't have a problem with it in my game.

Rolling 2d4 creates different results than 1d8 -- higher average, denser curve. Do not make this substitution. Also, greatswords are 2d6.

Large bastard swords (or any d10 weapon) deal 2d8 damage.

Lesser orb spells deal Xd8 damage.

Prismatic spells often use d8s to determine what effect they generate.

You could just roll them while waiting for things to happen. (Or even while things are happening)

You don't need an excuse, and you can do it until someone puches you in the face.

I'd take a neutral cleric - D8 HD. Go for Spontaneous Healing, then pick up the feat Spontaneous Inflict. Now all of your damage and your healing comes from a D8. Pick up a Morningstar (D8), add in a few more Cleric spells, and you're good to go. D8s for everything!

golieth ranger with over sized twf.

d8 HD

Fights with a pair of large bastard swords. 2d8 per hand, and double the normal attacks. Also after 4th level he has access to his spells. wand of cure X for more D8s.

Ranged weapon I sujest a short bow...d6 = d8 when the size is increased.

Cleric/Crusader/Ruby Knight Vindicator.
Healing with d8s, strikes with d8s, spells with d8s.
You've got just about every use of D8s ever invented here.

I think the Ranger's a d10 still, isn't it?

Could still go Scout. Rogue-ish skillset; Rogue-ish skillpoints; access to Shortbow and Morningstar. I especially like the Goliath idea. Favored Soul is entertaining, also. d8 HD, heal spells. Be a FS of a god with Favored Weapon: Bastard Sword and you're set!

Which book has the rules for Goliaths? I only have the main three books. The goliaths seem like a winning choice.

On a side note, which book has the Swashbuckler class? I may be joining a swash game, and I'd like to check it out first.

EDIT

shoulda gone looing first. sorry.

A Soulknife uses d8's for his Psychic Strike damage. They can also shape their mindblade into a longsword(d8 base damage) at 5th level I think.

Their Hit Dice are d10's though.

Monks with various combinations of level- and size modifiers to unarmed damage can use 4-6 d8 or more. They also use them for HP.

A monk/cleric multiclass can use d8's for hp, unarmed damage, and the various spell effects listed above.

A ranger who specializes in two weapon fighting using the double sword. I think there is some flame based enchantment that gives you an extra d8 fire damage. Also, when your ranger gets spells, use cure spells which are d8 based.
So you'll have: You're double sword (1d8 for each side) your d8 hp, longbow, and then cure spells. Also carry a lot of potions

I think the Ranger's a d10 still, isn't it?

A ranger has a d8 hit die in 3.5, and in 3.0 has a d10 hit die.

A Large monk (or a Medium monk with Improved Natural Attack) deals 2d8 from 8th to 11th, 3d8 from 16th to 19th, and 4d8 at 20th. The thundering enhancement deals extra d8s.

A Large bastard sword also deals 2d8. A half-giant fighter 2 or psychic warrior 2 can take Exotic Weapon Proficiency (bastard sword), Two-Weapon Fighting, and Oversized Two-Weapon Fighting, wielding two Large bastard swords a -2/-2.

:ahem: Yes Steve. Self motivation. Don't be a douchebag. If you've got books, it isn't that difficult to seek the answers. If you've got a computer with net access, you can look at the SRD and - get this - search and/or read.

Boy, what crawled up you arse and died? He asked politely and has even been thanking people for their contributions. If you want to be an ass do it elsewhere.

I don't have the books. I've only got the DMG and PHB. I knew that alot of people here have years of solid experience, while I've been playing for a pretty short amount of time. Thanks to the kind members of these boards who chose to respond, I've learned that large d10 weapons deal 2d8, and that I can run a Goliath. I'm gonna go find the book that they're in.

The point of these boards is sharing and helping each other out. Chill out.

I seventeenth the cleric. :ayyyy!: Give him/her/it a heavy mace or morningstar, and a light crossbow. Couple that with cure spells and most of the other major cleric spells...D8s virtually all the time!

Changeling Monk/Warshaper/Kensai, I'd say. Using the Skin of Proteus (and Treant form), Superior Unarmed Strike, and the Monk's Belt, you're easily hitting the RAW cap of 12d8 with each unarmed strike.

Mix in TWFing, Snap Kick, and the Speed enhancement for added fun. Your attack bonus aught to be OK, and you can probably end up getting off 6 to 9 attacks a round, each of which would do 12d8 + str +whatever.

That's anywhere from 72d8 to 108d8, if all attacks hit. That's a lot of d8s, neh?

Races of Stone. They have the Racial Trait: Powerful Build, so they can weild Large weapons as though they were Medium (but still do L size damage).

Consider the following:

Fullblade(Effectively a large bastard sword):
Usable in two hands with EWP(Fullblade)
19-20 2x crit range
&
Goliath Warhammer:
2 handed
Deal 2d8 damage
20 4x crit range

A large Fullblade(or Gwarhammer) does 3d8
A 2 size catagory increase yields 4d8
A 3 Catagory increase yields 6d8

Goliaths have powerful build which means they can wield weapons one size catagory bigger (among other stuff) and can take a racial substitution lvl at Barb one to increase in size one catagory during a rage.

Half-Giants also have powerful build, and are naturally psionic. Taking Psi-War could give you the expansion power which increases your size by one, or by two if augmented.

That stuff might be useful for a melee character.
--------------------------------------------------
Order of the bow intiate has an ability that allows it to attack with one arrow as a standard action a target within 30ft to do 1d8 per 2 lvls
Eventually goes out to 60ft

Longbow:
1d8 dmg
critrange 20 3x

That might be useful for ranged d8s
--------------------------------------------------
Other d8 weapons
Elven thinblade
Longsword
Cant think of any others off the top of my head
---------------------------------------------------
As has been mentioned before cleric is a pretty good way to go.

Shucks, you already got to my suggestion. I'm actually playing a monk with that very build right now, but grab a monk's belt and you can be unloading 4d8 per attack at only level 15.

The Fullblade is a weapon in Arms and Equipment which is 3.0 and not 3.5 if it matters.

Elf Cleric of Cerellion Laranthewhatever the androgynous deity of the androgynous race.

Use a longbow and longsword.

d8 hit points, melee damage, ranged damage.

Healing in levels of d8 (d8, 2d8, 3d8)

I don't think I saw it, but Order of the Bow Initiate (Complete Warrior) lets you add d8s in a manner similar to sneak attack. If you played a ranger (d8 HD, d8 longbow), you could be rolling a couple of those every round. A cleric might work better, but just thought I'd list it as an option.
