Buying minatures [Archive] - Wizards Community

06-21-07, 05:01 AM I know minatures arnt needed to play but i like being able to see my character. I love drow but i am trying to find somewhere where i can buy the drow figures :D help would be aprecaited. I would like to point out i live in the UNited kingdom(england) so places in a america would be no use to me. Online shops that sell them would be good to :) thank you

06-21-07, 06:37 AM Although I don't know exactly what kind of set up you have to deal with across the Atlantic, I can only assume that the store in which you purchase your sourcebooks in would also carry miniatures. If this is not the case because it is only a book store, then I would recommend one of the online retailors of WoTC products.

On a similar note, does anyone know of a place (online or not) that sells fairly common minis in bulk. I always seem to have to spend far too much to get a decent variety of the little guys, and my players are sick of using the same mini to represent such a wide variety of monsters. (When that little goblin was somehow imbued with damage reduction the first time, they were thrown for a loop though.)

06-21-07, 08:04 AM Sadly not, sourcebooks come either via bookshops (such as Waterstones) which don't stock miniatures, or else via Amazon on the internet. Conventional sources of miniatures over here seem to have dried up, the only reliable resource (I am told) is e-Bay.

06-21-07, 11:19 AM You can get D&D Minis individually or in packs from Paizo (www.paizo.com). I'm told the individual ones are overpriced, though the commons look reasonable enough for me. As the previous poster said, check ebay because I think there's quite a lot on there.

For unpainted minis I'm not sure of the best online retailer but you could buy just about any elf mini and paint it up as drow if painting is an option for you.

What I do for minis is take the picture I want, size it to the appropriate facing scale at 150 dpi, print it out, glue it to poster board, and cut it out (cut after the glue dries for better edges than cutting before gluing).

Ebay is the better way to go as long as you know the rules and procedures to make sure you don't get ripped off.
Paizo is an alright place. I've had good experience ordering from them. Just watch out though cuz thier shipping is nuts. I bought a package thru USPS that weights less than half a pound that could go thru my post box and it cost 5 bucks!

06-21-07, 01:25 PM You could also do it the old fashioned way and buy the metal miniatures and paint them. It can be a very relaxing and enjoyable hobby, and, you'll like your own painted miniatures a LOT better than the plastic D&D miniatures (this is NOT an attack on the line of D&D miniatures!).

The Games Workshop sells boxes of Dark Elves or Drow (16), but you have to assemble them and paint. You should have no problem getting them in the UK, as they they are based there. It will be the price I guess that you will have to check on.

Yeah, Reaper Minis have probably the best D&D type fantasy minis. They not only match the quality of Ral Partha from their prime years, they exceed it.

06-21-07, 03:59 PM You could always check the D&D Minis tradehouse here. People often post to either sell, or advertise a sale on eBay. Just make sure to check a persons trade rep first.

Ditto! My boyfriend loves playing drow and has this really cool War Hammer Wood Elf Lord (or Highlord...something like that) with a two-handed sword that he painted as a Drow for one of our last adventures. I don't know much about War Hammer but I know it's from England so it shouldn't be a problem for you to get some of the minis and from what I've seen of them at our game store, the of the Heroes for the Wood Elf army look really cool! A bit expensive for a single mini, but really cool.

06-22-07, 08:57 AM Well warhammer is just darn expensive :D i looked at the reaper minis and it turns out a shop in redhill (gamers guild) has a small amount and they r willing to order any that i need. buuttt how would i patin a drow with out their faces being so black all detail is gone ? :)

Give their faces color for the eyes, eyebrows, and lips.

06-22-07, 01:34 PM Don't go black. Use a very dark purple and then highlight with a purple a few shades lighter. It looks really good that way.

06-22-07, 04:33 PM for painting tips you will get really great results asking on a mini painting forum. To highlight a black skin tone an easy way is to dry brush dark grey on it and progressively lighten the color until you get what you want. Or stop in to one of thsoe GW store and ask for some tips there.

I just bought a dozen individual minis from Paizo. All female. My group has two female players (and one male playing a female character), but between us all we have maybe four or five female minis to choose from. So they end up having to use the same minis all the time, no matter what kind of character they're playing. I thought I'd fix that :) It cost me a pile of money, though.

Buying a whole set is your best buy (this way you get a Rare), but if you do not mind Commons or Uncommons you can get them on eBay fairly cheaply. Best if you want just Drow.
