I am a off duty DM and decided to make some characters that people don't play often and see some of their advantages and disadvantages. First on the list ninja Idecided to make it 10 lvl and wow this seems kinda cool.

OK so a ninja has a thing called Speed Climb basically it can move at it normal speed while climbing but needs to land on a horizantal surface and move only up or down. So this is what i invision a ninja and a halfling face off. The ninja runs a wall on an angle then run down the wall on an angle ending up some twenty feet away from where he started and know behind the halfling. could this work? can you run horizatally and vertically at the same time(on an angle) using speed climb?

First of all, moving along an incline is diagonal movement, not horizontal and vertical. Second of all, I believe that any character could do that, provided the slope was not too steep. If it did force a climb check, than yes, a ninja woldbeable to use its Speed Climb, provided that it stoppedmovement on a flat surface. Moving up an incline is jus ha, moving up. I is not wo seperae forms of movement.

I've played it as possible (I had a halfling psion who had a psionic ability to do the same action) Since this took the game into the 3rd dimension, I had to be sure I didn't cross the 15 foot cube that surrounds a character, (the 8 around them, the 9 above them and above those 8, and the 9 below them, thought those are against the ground and relativly not worth worrying about.)

I dunno if this is an actual rule, however. It's just how it was run for me.

So, is the idea to end up behind the halfling without provoking an attack of opportunity? While, with a high enough movement, this is entirely possible, do note that ending up "behind" the halfling will do you no good. There is no facing in 3.x, and the halfling will "turn around" faster than you can get behind him. I don't know if you're trying to trigger Sudden Attack damage from a backstab, or what.

Still, if you want to run over him along the wall, you just need to stay out of his reach. I guess it depends on how technical you want to get for how high the halfling can reach. If you picture a 3D grid with 5 foot cubes instead of squares, does the halfling threaten the cube above him? If so, you need to run 10 feet up, 15 feet over (asuming you're not starting out adjacent), and 10 feet down, for a total of 35 feet. If you assume the halfling doesn't threaten the cube above him, then you only have to go up and down 5 feet, for a total of 25.

Although, if you're looking for a quick way to close in without an AoO and do a Sudden Strike, the ninja's Ghost Step ability will do quite nicely. ;)

I don't have reason to do this it would just be SUPER COOL. Like Jedi running on a wall :emp: Ahhhh.

Thanks for the responses.
