| HatTrick06-15-04, 03:01 PM | Now that summer is here I won't see my D&D group for about 3 months so I'm looking for games in the meantime. I've asked around at game stores but no one has any running. Does anyone know if there are websites, etc. where you can find players for doing games say.. over an IM chat or somthing? Like everyone signs on fridays at 10 or somthing like that? I checked out one site called rpol.net but I don't think it's the same thing. Thanks for any advice. |
| Pathanus06-15-04, 03:31 PM | Look at this page -> HERE (http://boards1.wizards.com/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=347) , and see if anyone is in your area, or playing online. GL, Path |
| Whizler06-15-04, 05:31 PM | You could use this page: Playbyweb (http://www.playbyweb.com) It's a site for players all over the world. Great place to play, I am myself very fond of it. You only need a free account and your are ready to go! Good luck and hope you find what you seek. :D |
| CJ172006-15-04, 05:35 PM | I also have been playing at an online site. Unfortunately, it's a posting board and not an IM site. The biggest disadvantage is that everything seems to take about 10 times as long to do. Anywho, here's the website: roleplayinggames (http://roleplayinggames.net) Have fun. |

The absolute best place on the net for this is RPOL, which you said you've already found. It simply doesn't get any better than RPOL, I myself am playing in 4 games there, and DM'ing a 5th. Play by Chat (PbC): This is where you use an Instant Messanger like AIM, or a web based chat room to play in. The best one of these you can get, AFAIK, is actually AIM. It already has a built in dice roller in it's chatrooms, and that solves half your problems right there. Each has it's own pro's and cons. PbP Pros: Slower Pace means time to think, and time to look up rules when needed. Everything in one place, character sheets, dice rollers, private messages, everything you need. PbP Cons: Slow. They can go pretty quickly, but they will never be anywhere near as fast as a chat game. PbC Pros: Quick and spontaneous, everything rolls along at a good clip. PbC Cons: Fast, no time to stop and think. Hard to keep up with, as you can get several people talking at the same time, and by the time you can type out a reply, you may have missed your chance. Personally, I prefer PbP, because it lets you plan what you want to say/do, it doesn't absolutely demand your undivided attention while playing, and it has a heck of a lot more options. PbC is generally nice only if you want the more loose feeling game that isn't as serious. Not that they can't be serious, but they will generally be less so than a PbP game. |
| HatTrick06-15-04, 10:25 PM | Hey, thanks a lot. I'm looking into those links now. I orriginally liked the idea of the IM style because it would be more like being there in person, but you make it sound like the PbP could be fun too Edymnion. As for RPOL, I searched around there for games, but everything I found was called "freeform" or said "writers wanted" instead of players. Is that just the lingo they use? I'd like to give a game there a shot but I'm looking for somthing pretty close to the standard game and freeform sounds to me like players going "Ok, I pull a matrix style dodge on all 200 of those arrows....". ;) |
| Wizard06-15-04, 10:59 PM | PBP is fun, and while Edy and I are fans of different sites, RPOL is alright too. I, however, have an open spot in my PBP campaign, Kenelton's Folly. (http://kmansadventures.proboards2.com/index.cgi?board=gameeventsmage) When you actually look at the first few threads, they're quite disjointed, b/c I did most of the early stuff by PM back when the party hadn't met up with each other yet. So drop me a line, here, there, @ my AIM SN (Dblldnmrslp), or my email address, vballnut153@yahoo.com. |
| Cthulu1306-15-04, 11:03 PM | The only bad thing 'bout Rpol is that new games drop like flies due to lack of posting, interest etc. . . If your looking for a DND specific site, http://www.unlimitedrpgs.com is, in my opinion, your best bet, the game won't die out since it's been goin' on for a few years IIRC, and the DM's there seem fair.
