I have a problem. Being a player, I have noticed that there is a player who cannot use the standard rules. For whatever reason, he has to have a completly new race, class, background, etc.

He has wanted races that Fly, have 20+ feet, are incorporeal, or are morally obliged to destroy all other life. His classes have wanted even more drastic changes. He simply will not be anything at all standard, and even the monster races are not good enough for him, unless they are altered, and have CE undertones.

This is extremly annoying, for both the other players and the DM (which I have taken stabs at), and I was wondering what we could do to get him to realize the nearly limitless customization available within the Core races and classes.

do you not own a firearm of any kind?
you might want to have a straight talk with this player about what it is they're looking for in the game, and try to remind them that it is a group effort at a game of make-believe. If they can't be reasonable, uninvite them. I've only had to do that once, and it was with a player whose angry ego consistently usurped the game and forced the group to either play grand theft dungeon or sit idly by as he did his thing.
it's never easy to tell someone they need to go, but sometimes it has to be done. if you find yourself unable to cnfront this person, the sneaky way is to quietly reschedule the game for a while and wait for them to stop showing up and calling you.
of course, if you do that, you're a total b****.
and by that I meant to say bdork.

We have ways of dealing with these guys. See my sig for more info. Spoiler-block "Interesting Links," Heading "Things That Deserve to be Sigged Due to Awesomeness," link third from the bottom. Follow those instructions to the letter, and your problem should be solved.

Should have directed him to the "Folding Chair of Salvation" link, as that would be the weapon of choice. :P

BTW, could you PM me those 2 codes? I've wanted to sig Cryo's creations for a while and could never figure out how. :weep:

Maybe the player can be a thri-kreen with 1 arm cut off (you have to deal with the level adjustment)

I think it should be said that the problem is being lead by you as DM. You need to learn the art of saying "No." Just tell him that the only races allowed are the ones you have listed (in this case the ones in the PHB). When he argues tell him that he has plenty of options available and you are not going to rewrite your setting just to allow him to play race X.

Look at it this way, when he is playing monster race X and he heads into town, what will happen? The local militia will be called to deal with this menace. The entire party will be attacked. Would you, as mayor of Greyhawk, allow a monster to run amok in your streets terrorizing your citizens? I wouldn't and neither should you.

What makes this situation worse than others I have seen is that he wants to play an evil character. All he is doing is asking for the townsfolk to lynch his monster-butt. Do it.

I know that this seems like the DM is singling out a player, but there is a reason why there are PC races. The world isn't ready for a girralon to hang out at the local adventurer's tavern.

If he threatens to leave the game because he cannot play whatever he wants, let him. I assume that he is your friend. As your friend, he should show you respect just like you should do the same for him. In this case, he is not showing you any respect. He is actually trying to use your friendship for selfish reasons. Don't let him do this. If he is really a friend, he will grumble but acquiesce to your world.

Actually if I was the mayor, I wouldn't allow a monster to run amok in your streets terrorizing the citizens, but if they promise not to attack anyone I would allow them in. Of course I'm not the mayor, neither is the DM or any of the players in that game.

Yeah, but the DM should try to figure out what the Mayor would do. That is his job. Anyway, thanks for the help.

And I would use CryoSilver's guide, but he is signifigantly larger than me, and obese enough to absorb blows from a folding chair.

You are aware that the chair he sits in has restraints, right?:P

And no, I will not PM you the links, draco.

Instead, I will post them here, so they are available to all:

The Steve Guide: <site unavailable at present time> Sorry about that, folks, I'll see if it shows up later. Cryo exceeded his data transfer limit.

The Chair: http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?p=12317084#post12317084

Okay, so good luck with those.

I would talk with the DM, I would ask him why he allows the nonsense from that player and why he won't restrict him to the books. Tell him you find the player disruptive because of this.

If the DM, won't try to fix it, I would offer to take the DM's position. If you've never run before, don't let that bother you, it's not as hard as it seems (granted it can be a chore at times).

So you would take the time to negotiate with an evil being that has no problem with wanton destruction wandering through the streets? You wouldn't be mayor long. Remember that this player tends to have CE tendencies, promises are meaningless.

The world needs to be plausible. People need to react appropriately. This is when adventurers and militia are called forth.

armeniantwins, this is the time when the DM should not be negotiating with the player. He can either play by the rules or he can find another game that suits his taste. While the DM should never be a dictator, he should maintain control. If everyone in the group wants "normalcy" except one, then the odd man out needs to conform.

Actually, I have tried DMing with this group once or twice, and I run an online (on the site linked in my signature) and an offline campaign, so I might say I'm an experienced DM.

The problem is, this is one of those groups where the DM doesn't say no to anyone, or put a cap on the number of players, so the DM has like 13 people to worry about. Although he doesn't say no to membership, an ask for blockage will be seen as a need to inforce an already over-bearing control of the exact intricacies of the rules.

@Bob Loblaw: I liked your use of the word "conform". Its one of my favorite words. I digress, the DM probably should talk to the players.

By the way, I ran this thread under "Whats a DM to do?" and recieved very similar responses.

If you have 13 players, you might want to try the Jack Daniels before the folding chair. Of course, then you really can't in good conscience kick him out until he sobers up.

Well 13 is a large number to run for, it sounds like trimming it down wouldn't hurt, I would as a DM, start a new game, and simply set the ground rules, if they are not okay with that it's not like it would hurt the group to lose a member or 3. It might actually help to lose a few, if you trim down a large group like that to a medium size group of like minded people, you can probably have a great game.

Another solution is to talk to other members and ask if they are bothered by it, if you can find a few more people to back you up, come to the Dm as a group and state your case, if 3-4 members of the group are getting upset about it, then the DM ishould be more likly to try and fix his error.

Ask that DM to run two games, with smaller groups. One has that guy and can be a simple Grand Theft Greyhawk and keep the CE players sated and the other can be a normal game with more fun for those players.
