hm.

A bit of a tall order, really. You don't mention whether you've done this, so I'll suggest you read your Player's Handbook. Pay special attention to the chapter titled "Character". I think it's Chapter 3, but don't quote me on that.

At a minimum you must:
Generate your ability scores
Pick a race
Pick a class

The kicker here, however, is that unless you know for a fact that you have a game that's starting at Level 6, you really should start with a Level 1 character. There's a lot to be learned just with that part. Advancing in levels builds on those core concepts. Further complicating matters is the sheer volume of supplementary material that's available. Not all DMs own all supplements, and if they do they may not allow some or all of that material in the game they wish to run. There's no point - beyond practice - in taking the time to create a Level 6 Goliath Sword Sage if your DM's game starts at Level 1 and he disallows use of Races of Stone and Tome of Battle.

(To everyone else: Yes, I know that Goliaths carry a LA and therefore are outside of ScaryDude5's desire for a Level 6 PC. It's an example. Let's not confuse the poor guy any more than absolutely necessary. :D )

For more specific help, SD5, you'll need to post specific questions. Where, exactly, are you running into troubles with your understanding? Have you attempted to create a Level 1 PC? How far did you get? Were you following the steps in the Player's Handbook?

As far as how to find a game:

There's a Gamer's Classified forum around here somewhere. Also, check with your FLGS (Friendly Local Gaming Store) - y'know, the place in town that sells comic books and RPG supplies? They frequently have some sort of bulletin board advertising such things.

Failing that, start your own! Grab four of your friends and, as they say, roll some dice and have fun.

Hi scarydude, welcome to the world of D&D!

Generally, people don't create a character unless they have a game that they're joining, and they know the level of the game. For example, you might make a fun level 6 fighter, only to show up at your local gaming hut and find out that they're running a level 3 game and a level 14 game. So generally people just wait and find a game, then make their character.

Check out the SRD (System Reference Document) http://www.systemreferencedocuments.org/35/sovelior_sage/home.html if you don't have a Player's Handbook. The Player's Handbook is better, clearer, and has more explanations, while the SRD is just a stripped down set of the rules, and would be quite confusing to a beginner.

As for finding a game, you may want to check out this forum, which lets people find and join online messageboard D&D games:

Real Adventures (http://forums.gleemax.com/forumdisplay.php?f=278)

First, make sure you read the handbook (a stickied post near the top of the forum). There are very specific rules for participating on that forum, and not following them can have unhappy consequences. You should be able to find a game there within a couple of weeks where the DM and other members of the board can help you with character creation and learning the rules.

Just, out of curiousity.... Have you ever played DnD before? Because if you havn't, I would seriously wait till like may.

4th eddition is coming around the corner, so why learn this system when the new one is on its way n?

Because we don't know whether it will end up being well-received at all, or as fun an experience

That is purely oppinion based though... If he/she doesn't know this system, why spend money on it when a new one is coming out?

Even then, lets say he/she trys 4th (With an open mind, unlike a lot of the people here...) and doesn't like it...

3.5 will be so dirt cheap by then, they can have all the books for like 100$.
