| Dizmoo12-22-03, 05:06 AM | OK, I've read the 3E PHB about 2x through (albeit some parts skimmed over) and want to get it sorted by the time I start looking at the other two 3.5E core rulebooks which I should have by the end of the week (just ordered them from amazon). I find it helps if I'm tested on things like this, so if someone could give me a quiz, I'd really appreciate it. Keep in mind that it's the 3E PHB as I didn't really need to get the 3.5E one. |
| DemonMonkeyBoy12-22-03, 06:18 AM | :b:This is a closed book test!! 1> Name three actions that cause an AoO? 2> How is it possible to make a double move and still make 1 attack? 3> With out looking at the stats table, how can you determine your modifier? What is the Mod for a stat of 23? 4> How many Feats will a human fighter have at 3 lvl? 5> How many spells does a 1st lvl wizard start with? 6> Do bonuses of the same name stack? Is there any exceptions to this rule? 7> What is the DC for casting defensively, any spell lvl? |
| Dizmoo12-22-03, 06:38 AM | 1> Name three actions that cause an AoO? 1. Casting a Spell in a threatened area, unless casting on the defensive. 2. Unless if it's just moving you do in your turn, moving more than a 5ft adjustment in an enemies area. 3. Bull Rushing without the improved Bull Rush feat. 2> How is it possible to make a double move and still make 1 attack? On a charge, must be in a straight line with no backing up. 3> With out looking at the stats table, how can you determine your modifier? What is the Mod for a stat of 23? Find: The ability stat - 12, divided by 2 rounding down fractions. ie. 23-12=11 11/2=5.5 (rounded down = +5) 4> How many Feats will a human fighter have at 3 lvl? Hmm, this is a tricky one. You always get one at lvl 1 and 3 so that makes 2. Also you get an extra one because you are a fighter at every even level and one extra at first level for being human I think. I think a fighter gets a feat every even level which would make the total: 2(at 1st and 3rd level)+1(for being human at 1st level)+1(extra fighter feat at 2nd level) 5> How many spells does a 1st lvl wizard start with? 3 cantrips +int modifier, 1 level 1 spell +int modifier Not at all sure if that's right, it's just an educated guess, I'll check that after I've finished the quiz. 6> Do bonuses of the same name stack? Is there any exceptions to this rule? Not usually, such as barkskin not stacking for example. 2 exeptions (can't think of any others off hand), the feat toughness and AC bonuses such as the ac bonus. from plate armour and bracers +1. 7> What is the DC for casting defensively, any spell lvl? 10+spell level, I think, I'll check up on that as well. Please tell me how I did and thank you for the quiz! |

A fighter also gets a bonus feat at level 1. 2) Wrong. All cantrips, 3+Int modifier 1st-level spells. |
| Dizmoo12-22-03, 06:53 AM | Oops, was looking at spells per day, not in spellbook. Anyone else got any different questions? |

Most importantly Plate Armour and +1 bracers both provide Armour Bonuses so do not stack, but they do overlap so the wearer would benefit from the armour bonus of the bracers if attacked by incorporeal undead as it is a force effect. |
| DakezDarkenblood12-22-03, 08:14 AM | edit: Naeron beat me to it. A 23 attribute gives you a +6. A better formula is to subtract 10 from the attribute in question and divide by two, rounding down. ie: a 23 give you (23 - 10)/2 = 13/2 = 6.5 = +6 |
| Dizmoo12-22-03, 08:17 AM | Oops was using stat-12 instead of -10 So that's why in AC2 the bracers were giving my sorcerer or other spellcaster an ac bonus while it wasn't giving one to my 2 fighters in plate mail. |
| Dizmoo12-22-03, 08:26 AM | Not sure if this is relevant, but I have a helmet in AC2 called "Helm of Baduran" which gives an armour class bonus of +1 among over things, which seems to stack with the plate mail. Why is this? |
| rmilsop12-22-03, 08:32 AM | what sort of bonus is it? Luck, deflection, morale etc? |
| Dizmoo12-22-03, 08:35 AM | Oh I get it now, it's because it says it's a magical shielding in the text, so would that stack in that case? |
| Wizard12-22-03, 11:19 AM | Again, what sort of bonus does it give? Deflection? Divine? |
| Dizmoo12-22-03, 12:36 PM | It says that the nature of the magic is unknown in the information text, that's it other than that. Can we get back to the topic of quizzing me please? I really don't mean to sound rude. |
| BenjCano12-22-03, 12:56 PM | Dizmoo, Not bad, not bad at all. I'll pose some of my own questions, if you like: 8) How wide is a cone from a spell or breath effect at any given distance from its point of origen? 9) Which of the following receive an XP penalty, and how much of a penalty? A) Halfling Rogue 2/Wizard 7. B) Human Fighter 1/Ranger 4 C) Elven Wizard 13/Loremaster 3 D) Half-Elven Bard 8/Barbarian 5/Ranger 3/Cleric 1 E) Half Orc Fighter 5/Monk5 10) Given alignment restrictions, which of the following classes are valid multiclass options, without inducting an alignment change: A) Bard/Barbarian B) Bard/Paladin C) Bard/Druid D) Bard/Monk E) Barbarian/Druid F) Barbarian/Paladin G) Barbarian/Monk H) Druid/Monk I) Druid/Paladin J) Monk/Paladin 11) If I am a first level human fighter, with a 14 Strength, Dexterity 18, the Weapon Finesse (rapier) feat, the Weapon Focus (rapier) feat, the dodge feat, and a normal rapier, what's my total attack modifier, critical threat range, and damage on a successful (noncritical) hit? 12) I'm a sorcerer wishing to apply the Empower metamagic feat to a magic missile spell. What is my casting time? 13) Vecna is a god with the NE alignment. What possible alignments could a cleric of Vecna have? 14) What is the standard method of character generation? 15) Name three racial benefits of halflings. 16) I am a rogue with a base attack bonus of +8/+3. If I start a surprise round with an initiative of 18 within five feet of a flat-footed opponent with an initiative of 12, how many of my attacks qualify as sneak attacks (assuming the target is eligible for sneak attack when flat-footed). 17) What penalties does a 1st level ranger have for figthing with a longsword in his primary hand and a shortsword in his off hand? |
| Dizmoo12-22-03, 01:16 PM | 8) How wide is a cone from a spell or breath effect at any given distance from its point of origen? Don't know without looking in the book 9) Which of the following receive an XP penalty, and how much of a penalty? A) Halfling Rogue 2/Wizard 7. No B) Human Fighter 1/Ranger 4 Yes, 10% C) Elven Wizard 13/Loremaster 3 I think the elven favoured class is wizard so No. Then again, I'm probably wrong. D) Half-Elven Bard 8/Barbarian 5/Ranger 3/Cleric 1 Yes 60% I think, unless Bard is the Half-Elven favoured class, in which case it would be 40% E) Half Orc Fighter 5/Monk5 No 10) Given alignment restrictions, which of the following classes are valid multiclass options, without inducting an alignment change: A) Bard/Barbarian Yes B) Bard/Paladin No, not totally sure though C) Bard/Druid Yes D) Bard/Monk No E) Barbarian/Druid Yes F) Barbarian/Paladin No G) Barbarian/Monk No H) Druid/Monk Yes I) Druid/Paladin Yes J) Monk/Paladin Yes 11) If I am a first level human fighter, with a 14 Strength, Dexterity 18, the Weapon Finesse (rapier) feat, the Weapon Focus (rapier) feat, the dodge feat, and a normal rapier, what's my total attack modifier, critical threat range, and damage on a successful (noncritical) hit? Gah I'm totally bummed out on this one, I forgot what focus did and the stats of the rapier. 12) I'm a sorcerer wishing to apply the Empower metamagic feat to a magic missile spell. What is my casting time? Normal Action? 13) Vecna is a god with the NE alignment. What possible alignments could a cleric of Vecna have? NE, CE, LE 14) What is the standard method of character generation? All of it??? Rolling for stats, pick a race and class, choose skills and feats, choose equipment, calculate starting gold, calculate attack bonuses, ac and damage with weapons and adding extra background and history. 15) Name three racial benefits of halflings. +2 to move silently and hide?, speak halfling language 16) I am a rogue with a base attack bonus of +8/+3. If I start a surprise round with an initiative of 18 within five feet of a flat-footed opponent with an initiative of 12, how many of my attacks qualify as sneak attacks (assuming the target is eligible for sneak attack when flat-footed). 2, but not sure how many you can make a turn 17) What penalties does a 1st level ranger have for figthing with a longsword in his primary hand and a shortsword in his off hand? Totally stumped again. That was much harder than before, now I want answers people! |
| BenjCano12-22-03, 01:28 PM | Originally posted by Dizmoo [B]8) How wide is a cone from a spell or breath effect at any given distance from its point of origen? Don't know without looking in the book A cone is as wide at any point as it is long. Originally posted by Dizmoo B) Human Fighter 1/Ranger 4 Yes, 10% Humans have any class as thier favored. This example would NOT incur an XP penalty. Originally posted by Dizmoo D) Half-Elven Bard 8/Barbarian 5/Ranger 3/Cleric 1 Yes 60% I think, unless Bard is the Half-Elven favoured class, in which case it would be 40% Half-elves also have any as their favored class. This allows them to ignore their highest class level when calculating XP penalties. But this example would still incur a 40% XP penalty. Originally posted by Dizmoo B) Bard/Paladin No, not totally sure though Bards must be non-lawful. Paladins must be lawful good. Originally posted by Dizmoo I) Druid/Paladin Yes Druids must be neutral. Paladins must be lawful good. A paladin cannot multiclass as a druid (or vice versa) without changing alignment. Originally posted by Dizmoo 11) If I am a first level human fighter, with a 14 Strength, Dexterity 18, the Weapon Finesse (rapier) feat, the Weapon Focus (rapier) feat, the dodge feat, and a normal rapier, what's my total attack modifier, critical threat range, and damage on a successful (noncritical) hit? Gah I'm totally bummed out on this one, I forgot what focus did and the stats of the rapier. Attack bonus= +1 (fighter 1) +1 (Weapon Focus) +4 (Dexterity modifier) = +6. Critical range = 17-20 Damage = 1d6+2 (Strength modifier). Originally posted by Dizmoo 12) I'm a sorcerer wishing to apply the Empower metamagic feat to a magic missile spell. What is my casting time? Normal Action? Incorrect. A spontanteous caster (sorcerer or bard) applying a metamagic feat to a spell raises the casting time (mostly) to a full-round action. Originally posted by Dizmoo 14) What is the standard method of character generation? All of it??? Rolling for stats, pick a race and class, choose skills and feats, choose equipment, calculate starting gold, calculate attack bonuses, ac and damage with weapons and adding extra background and history. I meant stat generation, but since it was improperly worded I'll let you pass. Originally posted by Dizmoo 15) Name three racial benefits of halflings. +2 to move silently and hide?, speak halfling language +2 to Dexterity, +1 bonus on thrown weapons, +1 on all saves, etc. etc. etc. Originally posted by Dizmoo 16) I am a rogue with a base attack bonus of +8/+3. If I start a surprise round with an initiative of 18 within five feet of a flat-footed opponent with an initiative of 12, how many of my attacks qualify as sneak attacks (assuming the target is eligible for sneak attack when flat-footed). 2, but not sure how many you can make a turn 1 attack in the surprise round qualifies as a sneak attack, and 2 on the following using the full attack action before my opponent comes up in the Initiative count (and thus is no longer flat-footed). Originally posted by Dizmoo 17) What penalties does a 1st level ranger have for figthing with a longsword in his primary hand and a shortsword in his off hand? Totally stumped again. Because rangers receive Ambidexterity and Two-Weapon fighting for free at 1st level, the ranger in the above example would have penalties of -2 to all attacks made when fighting with two weapons. |

| Vanigo12-22-03, 10:21 PM | Originally posted by BlaineTog Why do Sorcerers and Wizards usually eschew armor, but Bards don't? Uh, I'm sure the answer you're looking for is that bards ignore ASF from light armor, but that's only true in 3.5; in 3.0 they have to avoid all armor or risk spell failure. |

Actually, it was true in 3.0 as well; they just chose to not mention it in the bard class description. It is mentioned elsewhere (in the explanation of ASF, I believe). |

It is mentioned elsewhere (in the explanation of ASF, I believe). Yes, the remaining thousands of PH readers all managed to miss this one passage. Trust me, there is no such rule. Bards suffered ASF in 3.0 exactly as Wizards and Sorcerers (and Assassins) did. The only ways around it were prestige classes and mithral. Although I do find it odd that someone would read the 3.0 PH, but then use the 3.5 DMG and the 3.5 MM. That would just get confusing. |
| Dizmoo12-23-03, 01:02 PM | The reason I'm not getting the PHB 3.5E is because I don't have the cash to buy a simple update. |

Hope this helps you..... |

He only wanted to be tested on the PHB, not the DMG. 6: How fast can an level 8 monk run with boots of striding and springing with the run feat? Again, that requires information from the DMG. Specifically, you need to know what the boots of striding and springing do. Even then, it's rather unclear whether the boots stack with the monk's enhanced speed in 3.0. (I think they cleared it up in 3.5, but I'm not sure.) 8: How many spells does an 1 level wizard know with 9 skill points left.? Uh... what? That doesn't even make sense. And yeah, the Helm of Balduran is from Baldur's Gate (and BGII). I don't know what you think AC2 is; to the best of my knowledge it's Asheron's Call 2, which wouldn't make any sense at all. In any case, Baldur's Gate works with second edition rules, and very little there directly applies to 3.0 and 3.5. Asheron's Call isn't even close. |
