can't decide what class to make a tiefling [Archive] - Wizards Community

I'm the DM in my group and run an NPC or 2 to fill out my 2-3 man group. In my upcoming campaign I'm running an aasimir cleric named Son and the tiefling I mentioned in the subject named ******* by his bitter mom. Don't know if the word for an illegitimate child is against the rules here even if used properly or as a name (and would like to know if it is).
here is what back story I have right now; Son's mother fell in love with and married a half-celestial who had a long time feud with a half-fiend. In a long-hard battle the 1/2-fiend mortally wounds the 1/2 celestial. As the celestial lay dieing the fiend raped his wife as a mockery of him. Just as the fiend finished the rape, the celestial killed him from behind and then died himself.
The rape produced a child and the widow decided to carry the child to term because her late husband would have been against holding the sins of the father against her son. While raising the children a famine struck the land, and the widow fell on hard times and sent the children to a lord to train in their chosen fields.
Son was trained by the clerics in the temple at the lords keep. Unfortunately I can't decide what direction I want to take ******* as far as character class I may go fighter although I may go ranger with the favored enemy being outsider and 2 weapon fighting (there's nothing more intimidating than a guy with red eyes, horns, and a cologne that smells of brimstone swinging around a couple of battleaxes). They both have plans of taking the transition classes at some point to upgrade from plane-touched to halfs, ******* is doing it to try and master his inner demon which he fears greatly, and Son is doing it mainly to support his brother but will later continue due to the power it gives (which may eventually corrupt him  ).
If anyone can give me a good RP reason for him to go into any particular class I'd be appreciative for a lil push in that direction. As it stands his reason to be a fighter is because he's tired of his brother having to protect him and decided to learn how to fight, then once being taught he was good at it so would have become a gaurd for the lord. As for the reason for me maybe making him a ranger would be that due to his mom's troubles with food, he wanted to help provide food for his people so he took up hunting with the rangers in the lord's woods. I'm fond of sorcerers but the cha limit wouldn't be productive and I can't think of a good RP reason for it.

As far as RP, the tiefling most likely would be drawn to those things that allow him to vent his rage at the circumstancs of his life. Fighter, Barbarian (especially), and Ranger are all good choices for this. Rogue would probably suit him, as well, due to his "nature" of decieving other people. If you truly want something off the wall, why not a Paladin of Freedom (from UA), or maybe just a regular Paladin (although, with the Cha drop, it might not be a good idea...). As far as game mechanics go, if I recall correctly, a Tiefling gets +2 Int, -2 Cha (it's late right now, so I'm probably forgetting stat mods). If that's the case, he would probably be drawn to Wizardry (particularly either planar magic [see summoning] or divination, in order to represent the fact that he is going to want to learn everything about himself that he can, in order to understand where he is going), due to his "naturally" high intelligence.
Just a thought or five...

+2 dex +2 int -2 cha, so most right, and I'm thinkin of it as him being raised by a woman who married a celestial I would think she has to be a kind, good-hearted woman (and if for some reason not, well she is) so he's not deceitful (which is why I ruled out rogue even with the and due to his father's actions I'm playing him as a guy trying to attone (his mother didn't hold it against him but he himself did), the pali was thought of but I think he won't have set foot in the temple due to his origin.

Umm.... what about the PCs? You're going to steal the show with your soap opera. I am firmly against "rounding out" a party and if you are dead set on doing it there are three good classes for it: warrior, adept, and expert.

you're taking it wrong. most of this'll never be known by the players unless one of them actually asks. I just like to know where any char that I am controlling is coming from. It'll also let me force a buddy of mine to DM in between section of story and I'll have a character that is of equal level of the players. All that they'll know is that the other 2 ppl in their party are an aasimir cleric, and a tiefling of a yet to be decided class, who also happen to be brothers.

Blatantly Monk.

Make the tiefling Lawful/whatever you want and have him fight a constant battle against his chaotic nature. As a result he decided to throw himself into the most arduous training regime he could find to master his self control and his temper. Thus the lawful aspect is simply his outward behaviour and is enforced by strength of will, not his nature which would lead him down all sorts of dark and nasty paths should he give in to it.

Seems the way forward to me.

Monk is a good idea, or fighter. +2 Int and +2 Dex are good for tactical fighters who want Expertise and the ability to move around easily.

and my 2 or 3 players seem like they're goin to play noncom characters, and everyteam needs a healer esp. early on (we're startin with lvl 2 chars). so I decided I'll need a mildly combat character at least cuz I'm tryin to talk one of my players into some combat class just so that we can end up in combat without me having to think through how many spells everyone has and whether the rogue got away to some place where he can try a sneak attack. I'm thinkin that I'll have 2 arcane casters (one bard, one other) and my other buddy will probably play a rogue until he can go assassin

Id make the half brothers more opposite and take on the fact that the tiefling never felt he fit in at home and when he was sent off to train he ended up leaving, becoming a wanderer in some sense (Bard). This way he kind off parallales the cleric as they both find themselves providing help to the party but in different ways. The dex and int would be nice for a bard. I guess this back story could work well for barbarian or maybe even ranger too. I just think a tiefling bard would be an interesting character to play. Maybe his brother got all the attention when they were young and now he craves it to some extent. I just think that would be interesting. I just think bards are good NPC's too.

Why not make the tiefling a rogue?
It is their favored class, after all (and the +2 Dex and +2 Intelligence is a major boon to the rogue class) plus the other benifits are well in line with the rogue as well. Plus some other nifty extras. They can also make a good Swashbucker or Duelist (From the Complete Warrior and DMG, respectively.)

THe +1 LA hurts with any of the spellcasting classes. Though the wizard, I think, would be the best choicee of all of them. (especially with certain transmutations, such as alter self and polymorph.)

To stretch it a little (and go for mini-maxing) how about a swashbuckler (Complete Warrior) Both the dex and int will be important, its a reasonably good warrior, but rounded out so he won't outshine any party fighter. Swashbucklers are usually motivated people who are outsiders. A flamboyant hero trying to make up for his evil heritage (in a land that really doesn't like his kind). Heck, sounds almost like Spiderman.

I'd go wizard, both for min-maxing reasons and it's the opposite of Son.

Tieflings do make nasty Swashbuckler/duellists.

Actually as a DM I'm very demanding from my players when it comes to PRC acquisition....so just popping into various crazy PRC's isn't an easy task...as for the rest of you yes...this is a really good combo...

This is actually good you brought this up. I am going to play a tiefling in the next campaign which will start up soon. You can take this option into consideration or not, its up to you.

The best way to fo, I think, is a Ranger. Because of the food problem, a ranger can still search for food for the family as you said. One issue is that hunting with rangers will generally involve bows and spears. This to me would not suit the character and swords and hunting don't really go for looks wise. So, the pickle you would be in is to take two-weapon fighting or ranged weapon abilties (rangers combat style). I say, you take two-weapon fighting and use two light crossbows and use them with two-weapon fighting. You may make a -2 penalty, you gain extra attacks at a distance. You can also benefit with this from your +2 Dex.

If you take this road, you can also take feats such as Rapid Reload to be able to gain the extra attacks, and Rapid Shot to gain yet another attack. Lastly, a prestige you could also look at taking is a modification of the Deepwood Sniper. This allows you to further improve your skills with the crossbow. Please, reply and give your view on this character.

The 3.5 SRD
Crossbow, Hand: You can draw a hand crossbow back by hand. Loading a hand crossbow is a move action that provokes attacks of opportunity.

You can shoot, but not load, a hand crossbow with one hand at no penalty. You can shoot a hand crossbow with each hand, but you take a penalty on attack rolls as if attacking with two light weapons.

So only one attack with each hand every two rounds so long as you are holding two of them. The alternative, using one and taking the archery route through ranger seems a bit pointless really, especially considering the feat you will have to spend to gain proficiency in hand crossbow and get a short range, low damage weapon.

If you want to go the ranged two weapon fighting route then go with darts or daggers, and if you want to go the archery route then stick with a bow, unfortunately the two don't really mix.

Even using a repeating crossbow becomes a bind at sixth level when with rapid shot you don't have enough ammunition to last even two rounds.

As far as dual-wielding ranged weapons goes crossbow just doesn't seem to fit lest I pull both first and then put one back once it's been fired, not as effective as throwing daggers, which I'll do using the two weapon fighting style and quick draw (I think that's the one that lets you draw as fast as you can throw) then I'll take weapon focus on the axes so he'll be effective in close combat, I mean he's a woodsman hunting isn't all that gets done in the woods for a keep. I have more to say but I have to go get a tire for my truck.

Your's truly,
