Besides, you CAN'T have a d3.
There are at least two types of d3. The true d3, which is a triangular prism with rounded ends, and a d6 that has 1-3 written on it twice.;)

But yeah, the easiest way is to just use a d6 though.

my dm got one, unbeknownst to him, with some game, and spent several minutes rolling and wondering why he couldnt get a 4, 5, or 6.

you can roll a d6 with 1 or 2 = 1, 3 or 4 = 2, 5 or 6 = 3 (divide by two)
alternatively, you can roll a d4 and reroll 4s

i've kept my two d3s through decades of gaming, college moves, all that...

That's the way it says to do it in the PHB. I've always done a d6, and subtract 3 from 4, 5, or 6. *shrug*
