05-18-06, 01:25 PM Besides for casting defensively to avoid attacks of oppurtunity:

When do spellcasters have to make concentration checks? If they get hit in the same round? Or when they get hit when they are casting the spell? or Both?

I have a charecter that was playing a mage and he was surrounded by fighters hitting him. Does he have to make a concentration check for all the damage he suffered that round or just if they would have hit him when he was casting?

05-18-06, 01:44 PM You only need to make a concentration check if hit while you're casting a spell.

For Example:

*You begin casting a spell*
Joe the Barbarian gets an attack of opportunity and hits you.
*You make a concentration check*
Rob the Archer uses his readied action to hit you as you begin casting.
*You make a concentration check*
*You cast the spell*

No more concentration checks need to be made.

Also, as shown above, you make a concentration check each time you are damaged.

Before, no. Only if you take that damage while casting your spell.

*Mage Homer throws a fireball*
*You take damage*
*You begin casting your spell*
*Mage Bart casts fireball as part of a readied action against your casting*
*You make a concentration check versus the damage*
*You cast your spell*

Homer hit you before you started casting so there is no concentration check. Bart hit you while you're casting (sneaky devil) and thus you make a concentration check.

a) Anyone can ready an action to disrupt a spellcaster, using the readied action rules (PHB pg 160).

b) The readied action occurs before the action that triggers it.

Keep in mind that using a readied action changes the character's initiative for the rest of the encounter.
