| shadowfox62802-09-06, 08:39 PM | I was confronted with a small situation... be a spellcaster, or a melee person? Well, the current COmbat Caster (I won't rant about her this time) isn't reliable... period (other reasons that I won't talk about). Now, my character recently died, and he was a fighter... There's 1 Bard, 1 Sorcerer, and 3 Rogues... Why? I'm clueless... So, I was confronted with something: Use a combat caster, or melee person... After trying to convince my DM to let me use a homebrew race (my final revision was +2 INT, -2 STR, -2 CON, that's all I'll say), I decided to be a Centaur. Since the group is now lacking brute force, I might as well replace my previous role. I was going to be a Paladin, but 2 things occured to me: 1) I can't play lawful Good (I have enough time keeping Chaotic Neutral due to a real life honor) 2) Paladins get steeds... If the Paladin is a Centaur, what happens with the steed? People, this is a serious topic here... Honestly. So, here's my question: If a Paladin is a Centaur, does the steed get replaced by something else? |

For example, maybe replace the horse with another companion. (Like what a Blackguard gets, except replace fiendish with celestial) Maybe get a celestial hawk or something. However, I can say this: If you don't feel comfy playing lawful good, you might not like playing a paladin. You can do whatevcer you want, but you probably will find the alignemtn restrictive. (Myself, I tend to play lawful or neutral good characters anyway, so to me, it's not restrictive at all. ymmv.) |

| shadowfox62802-09-06, 08:58 PM | I wasn't planning to play a Paladin now (I'm not too good at RPing, and I'm trying to wrok on them). But, I'm planning to in the future, and, well, the people I play with usually lack a good side to make "interesting" things happen... And a lot of people like to play as spellcasters or fighters (in my campain, too many spellcasters. In my firend's, too many fighters). I just wanted something to reference to in the future. |
| Verelor02-09-06, 09:00 PM | In fact, don't use the standard paladin at all. Use JD's (check my signature). |
| pres_man02-09-06, 09:47 PM | Even centaurs though could use a pack animal to carry their extra: lance, greatsword, longspear, rations, rope, large shield, small shield, admantine warhammer, silvered longsword, undead bane disrupting heavy mace, etc. You don't actually have to mount your ... mount. |
| ShadowDragon868502-09-06, 10:14 PM | Why not, though? A Paladin's mount is celestial in nature, no? So if you mounted it, you could make Half-Celestial Centaurs. ^_^ |
| Millennium02-10-06, 01:49 PM | If you have access to Complete Divine, then what I'd do is start off as a Ranger and then multiclass into Holy Liberator when you can. Advantages: 1) Holy Liberators have most of the same flavor as paladins, including a code of conduct, but it all comes with a twist: they're CG, not LG. This will free you up from having to play an alignment you're not comfortable with, while still retaining much of the flavor of paladins. 2) Holy Liberators get a celestial companion instead of a mount. They can use the companion as a mount if it can be ridden, but they can also get other kinds of creatures. This frees you up from having to worry about the mount. 3) Holy Liberator is a PrC, but by starting off as a Ranger you can get into the combat/caster role from the get-go. 4) Dual-wielding centaurs are awesome. Centaurs with bows are only slightly less awesome. 5) Whereas the paladin is about honor and goodness, the holy liberator is about freedom and goodness. Combine this with the nature background of a ranger, and you can get some interesting flavor and roleplay possibilities. |
