| CeresOfTerra02-23-04, 06:45 PM | I have a level 2/3 fighter/rogue. 58 HP, decent saves for my level, AC 18 (3 dex, 5 breastplate), and I use a +2 bastard sword. My resources are limited to 980 gp. All in all, I'm in pretty good shape, except that a fellow party member (level 5 ranger) is being controlled by a major artifact (he wasn't supposed to get that) and is probably going to kill me. I can dispatch him in 3 attacks, but the item he's going to use against me casts Eternity Of Torture on every hit, and I can't pass that will save except on a natural 20. It's only a scalple, but I don't have improved disarm, meaning that I'd take an attack of opportunity, which is a chance I'd rather not take. So, what can I do? The key point in this is that my character doesn't know about the artifact. But, he doesn't trust the ranger either. So, being a stealthy rogue, I can justify anything that would be a good plan of escape or something that would be generally useful to such a character. So, what can I do within the confines of RP? |
| TheRedRobedWizard02-23-04, 07:03 PM | Stab. In. The. Face. While. Sleeping. That's the only way to solve this. Either that, or get everyone else in the party to make him bleed. -TRRW |
| PhaedrusXY02-23-04, 07:04 PM | Erm... need more info. What feats do you have? What fighting style do you usually employ? How does the ranger usually fight? Do you have any expendable magic items, like a scroll of Blink or something? Or could you get your hands on some before you have to fight him? If you expect him to trust you to take watch, Coup De Grace him in his sleep. You'll have to work out some kind of justification in character for it yourself, though, because there is no way we can have enough info for us to help you much with that. |
| CeresOfTerra02-23-04, 07:20 PM | The ranger typically uses a bow, but the artifact controlling him is substancially more powerful, as well as melee, and that's what I'm afraid of. The feats I have are combat expertise, exotic weapon proficiency: bastard sword, weapon focus: bastard sword, quick draw, and dodge. I don't have any magic items aside from my +2 bastard sword and a headband of true darkness (gives me blindsight 60 ft.). I have only 980 gold. I'm CG, so I don't have any reason to kill him while he sleeps. My combat style is mostly hack and slash, with a little bit of tumbling. |
| Felgraf202-23-04, 07:25 PM | Took me a couple seconds to figure out what game you were talking about, Ceres. I can try to help fill in some gaps (even though I wasn't there when the artifact was taken.) The 'Stab in the face' won't really work, since none of us have any idea that the artifact is there. (Yet.). There's also an aspiring mystic theurge in the party (Myself. But we're only level 5, so I'm essentially just a level 4 cleric, level 1 sorcerer. Not too useful just yet, aside from the fact that I'm the only one in the party who can heal people. >.>) The ranger tends to prefer long range combat, and loves bows. A lot. However, that part isn't the danger: It's the abilities of the artifact (essentially, a massively evil torture kit that has gained sentience. Which was stolen from the lair of a Vampire Lord. We were *supposed* to escape (Since he was just toying with us), but not take his stuff. And since the ranger carved '*Name of Ranger* was here' into the wall, we've also probably got a :censored::censored::censored::censored: :censored::censored: off Vampire Lord after us.). |
| Yankee02-23-04, 07:40 PM | Yikes! Tough situation. Only one solution comes easily to mind - and its practically tantamount to killing the Ranger. Ditch him. The Ranger carved his name in the wall, and has the artifact the vampire lord wants. Its not too much of a stretch to convince the rest of the party to bugger right off without him. 980gp buys a couple of good horses for everyone, ride one to death getting away, then pace the other one normally. Even if the ranger tries to track you down, he'll never catch up. The reason its practically killing the Ranger is that the DM will probably just turn the possessed dude into an NPC rather than run a game where the party is split so unevenly. Plus, it makes a good story - on the run from a former colleague who aside from trying to kill you may bring the wrath of a vamp. lord down on your heads. Heck, the DM may just decide the vamp lord is ticked off enough just to splat the Ranger and get his stuff back. Either way, its good not to be nearby. |
| PhaedrusXY02-23-04, 07:43 PM | Originally posted by Felgraf2 since the ranger carved '*Name of Ranger* was here' into the wall, we've also probably got a :censored::censored::censored::censored: :censored::censored: off Vampire Lord after us.). I think all you need to do is stay away from him for a while, and the Vampire Lord will take care of him for you. :D Other than that, you should try to subdue him somehow. But since neither you nor us knows what powers that artifact has granted him, who knows what would be the best way to do that... A Darkness spell coupled with that headband should work pretty well in nullifying his bow use, at least against you. (Well... maybe not if you're using 3.5 rules...) Get a sap, get the cleric to cast Darkness on you, and knock him out with Sneak Attacks. |
| Tevish Szat02-23-04, 07:59 PM | I would reccomend slitting the Ranger's throat in his sleep (Coup de Grace). Poison the blade with the nastiest poison you can afford, prefrably one that hits con. If you can sell something or steal and sell something to get Black Lotus extract, do so. On the chance that you want to take the moral high road, i have reccomednations based on how to deal with a ranger that wanbts to kill you. Make sure to get into a city. Rangers are nigh impossible to lose or escape from in the wild, but in the city, a rogue is king. if you must take the ranger, i ask you what his climb check is. if its low enough, you can try to catch him in a pit trap he can't climb out of. Now, here's the best thing to do BEFORE the ranger comes after you. Sneak up on him with the rest of the party late at night, and havesomeone break/take his bow an other weapons while the rest of you jump him in grapple and tie him up. if you can get an animate rope spell, it does all the work for you! |
| CeresOfTerra02-23-04, 08:07 PM | Coup de grace while he sleeps? With a poisoned blade? Before he's attacked us? I think I should mention that we're all CG, NG, or LG. |
| Full Quiver02-23-04, 09:21 PM | Felgraf2 did you pick up grease as one of your spells? Just grease up his shine artifact of doom and he'll have trouble keeping a grip if he doesn't make his save. CeresOfTerra is your character know to have sticky fingers? because you could just be going through his stuff and "WOW that looks like it's worth a lot of gold. I'd better go sale this little trinket of evil for my ranger pal here so we can split the gold." |
| Phist02-23-04, 09:29 PM | You can kill someone in their sleep if you're good. You just can't like it. That might mean an atonement spell, maybe not even that if you know he's trying to kill you. What race are you all? (mock me freely if you have already said) |
| Felgraf202-23-04, 09:48 PM | Well, the problem is.. we don't *know* he's trying to kill us yet. No one even knows he has the artifact. His alignment was actually good before he picked the damn thing up unknowingly. It just has an obscenely high ego. >.> |
| Nom02-24-04, 12:17 AM | If you don't know, then why are you trying to figure strategies against it? In this case, I'd advise trusting the DM. Either there's more to come, or you're in deep trouble - either way, rather than metagaming against it, enjoy the ride. BTW - there's no rule against seeking out powerful clerics of a friendly god and petitioning them for help. |
| Felgraf202-24-04, 12:26 AM | This is mostly just 'What do we do when we find out', since we will, sooner or later. :P I suppose it's because we're both curious. It's been months since we actually played this campaign, anyways. :) Interestingly enough, the ranger *did* try the Cleric thing before the artifact took over his body completely. (He made some friggen insane saving throws, let me tell you. :) ) Suffice to say it ended poorly, and the Cleric couldn't do anything. He may, however, have alerted his superiors. I don't know about that, though. |
| BenjCano02-24-04, 01:27 AM | How in the name of Admodeus's Ruby Rod do you have 58 hit points at fifth level? Even if you rolled the max for all four level ups (odds of that happening: 2.14 * 10 to the negative 6), you would need a Constitution modifier of +4 to get that many. Edit: Math error duly noted and corrected. |

Erm... no, he'd need a con modifier of +4. 10+10+6+6+6=38 58-38=20 20/5=4 I'd guess he probably has a 20 Con from a magic item or something. Or his DM lets them have max hit points (one of mine does, he's crazy :P ). |
| BenjCano02-24-04, 02:37 AM | Originally posted by PhaedrusXY Or his DM lets them have max hit points (one of mine does, he's crazy :P ). If I ever find myself in that sort of game, I'm riding the Barbarian Express. Thanks for the catch, Mr. XY. I get bad at math when I be sleepy. |
| CeresOfTerra02-24-04, 03:04 AM | I rolled really well. I wouldn't blame the DM if he had it in for me for rolling that high HP. Thanks for the advice, everyone! |
| BenjCano02-24-04, 03:13 AM | Actualizing an event that has a .00000214 chance of occuring is not "rolling really well." |
| SmoothB02-24-04, 03:16 AM | So easy!!!! Ahem, let me tell you about the wonders of the.... SMOKESTICK Smokestick: This alchemically treated wooden stick instantly creates thick, opaque smoke when ignited. The smoke fills a 10- foot cube (treat the effect as a fog cloud spell, except that a moderate or stronger wind dissipates the smoke in 1 round). The stick is consumed after 1 round, and the smoke dissipates naturally. A bank of fog billows out from the point you designate. The fog obscures all sight, including darkvision, beyond 5 feet. A creature within 5 feet has concealment (attacks have a 20% miss chance). Creatures farther away have total concealment (50% miss chance, and the attacker can’t use sight to locate the target). A moderate wind (11+ mph) disperses the fog in 4 rounds; a strong wind (21+ mph) disperses the fog in 1 round. The spell does not function underwater. This thing creates lots of smoke. Great? Smoke gives you 20% concealment against anything 5 feet from you, and 50% miss chance and TOTAL concealment (no targeting, no seeing) anything past 5 feet from you. How does this help you? The key is your blindsight 60. You can see him since it penetrates fog/smoke, and he cannot see you. Stick to ranged attacks, and keep on pouring on the smoke (multiple sticks). You'll get free sneak attack damage anytime you are 30 feet from him. Soon he will go down. So how does he find you? Listen Check DCs to Detect Invisible Creatures Invisible Creature Is . . . DC In combat or speaking 0 Moving at half speed Move Silently check result Moving at full speed Move Silently check result –4 Running or charging Move Silently check result –20 Some distance away +1 per 10 feet Behind an obstacle (door) +5 Behind an obstacle (stone wall) +15 So he has to make that check, it is a free action at the start of his turn. Thing is, just attack once then take a '5 foot step' (or more) now you have moved and he has to beat your move silent check. If he does find you, you still have concealment and he might miss you. That isn't a problem though. Just use 1 attack per round, and keep moving. It gets sicker. Want to create A LOT of smoke? Well since smoke sticks are such an advantage to your PC, you might say he always sleeps next to the campfire. He might always stay next to it. The second there is a problem you just spend a free action to drop some some sticks into the fire. This should definitely create a big cloud of smoke bigger than 10 feet as it spreads. All of it will be to your advantage. If your enemy is chaotic evil, it would only be proper RP for him to go after you despite the obvious disadvantage. Maybe even taunt him just as you throw the sticks into the fire. Want to make it even worse? For the LOW LOW LOW price of 500 gp, you can get yourself a Quall's Whip Feather Token. Whip: A token that forms into a huge leather whip and wields itself against any opponent desired just like a dancing weapon. The weapon has a +10 base attack bonus, does 1d6+1 points of damage, has a +1 enhancement bonus on attack and damage rolls, and a makes a free grapple attack (with a +15 attack bonus) if it hits. The whip lasts no longer than 1 hour. Moderate conjuration; CL 12th; Craft Wondrous Item, major creation; Price 50 gp (anchor), 300 gp (bird), 200 gp (fan), 450 gp (swan boat), 400 gp (tree), 500 gp (whip). So once you unleash the smoke, sick a whip token on him. It alone might kill him, and it can grapple him. That means he might not even get a chance to kill you as you make him a pincushion. Also remember with its BAB it gets 2 attacks. Now what if he attacks you, as you sleep? Just make a camoflauged hiding spot. Make a hide check to hide yourself well. Other options... Wand of Color Spray: You did take ranks in USE MAGIC DEVICE? Or maybe a gift to the party mage? Wand of Charm Person: He loves you, would he attack you? Scrolls: Same as above, include suggestion, or fly (ranged attacks from above and the scalpel can't hurt you, then drop smoking sticks on the enemy so he can't see you), charm monster (lasts days), dimension door (run away), evard's black tentacles (nice grapple and slowly kills), greater invisibility scroll (he can't see you, and sneak attack glory!), and solid fog (ie improved smokestick and worth a look!). Potions: Barkskin (+4, 900 gp for AC), displacement (50% miss chance, 750 gp), and shield of faith (+4, 600 gp for AC). All of these options are less than 900 gold, and all with varying degrees of success. Basically you have the upperhand, and it is not too hard to justify a rogue having a trick or two up his sleeve. Good luck, you win. |
| CeresOfTerra02-24-04, 12:16 PM | You are freaking awesome! Thank you! |
| SmoothB02-24-04, 12:19 PM | No problem. I guess legal training has its benefits? |
| BenjCano02-24-04, 01:55 PM | Originally posted by SmoothB No problem. I guess legal training has its benefits? Yeah, but having to rise from your crypt each night to feed upon the warm blood of the living is a definite drawback. | Tony11102-24-04, 02:11 PM | BenjCano: How do you arrive at these values? The chance of a fighter2/rogue3 rolling maximum hit points depends on which class he started out in because the first class is maximized for free. If he took fighter first, he needs to roll a 10,6,6,6. The chance of this happening is (10 * 6 * 6 * 6)^(-1) = 1 in 2160 = 4.63 * 10^(-4) If he took rogue first, he needs to rolll a 10,10,6,6. The chance of this happening is (10 * 10 * 6 * 6)^(-1) =1 in 3600 = 2.78 * 10^(-4) So where are these 2.14 * 10^(-6) values coming from? Tony111 |
| SmoothB02-24-04, 06:22 PM | Yeah, but having to rise from your crypt each night to feed upon the warm blood of the living is a definite drawback. I said legal training, not being a lawyer. Having a nice understanding of the law, how it applies to you, how to research law, and how to defend yourself in court are very nice things to know. Surprisingly those skills happen to have a strong synergy with anything that involves rules *cough* DnD. |
| Daerys02-25-04, 03:38 AM | ... I suggest your solution is to let the guy holding the Ultimate Artifact of Doom go ahead and kill your character. Clearly your DM can be classified as a shortsighted nutbar for allowing something like that into your game at that level, and I recommend not playing with that goober anymore. :) |
| CeresOfTerra02-25-04, 07:33 PM | *SMACK* I didn't come here to get an evaluation of my DM. I like my DM. I think my DM is skilled and talented. I know for a fact that we're psychotic players (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=187005) and I'm not going to blame the DM for our foolishness. I came here for advice on what would be in character to do and help keep my character alive.   |
| Daerys02-26-04, 01:32 AM | Duly noted. I have henceforth redirected my scorn to a more appropriate individual. :smirk: |
