So my CN wu jen died last night, may she RIP in the back of my black D&D binder. I'm really pumped for my new character though, a CG whisper gnome beguiler. I've generally always preferred to play good characters, but it may be hard going this time around. I'm now a good character with the ability to take away the will of others. With my emphasis in illusion and enchantment spells, as well as my class having so many rogueish abilities, it seems to tend a bit more towards the neutral or even evil side of the spectrum. I'm just curious as to what you think such a character's outlook on life and morality may be.

Theres no harm casting Charm spells. It just makes people friendly, not helpful, so you aren't actually controlling them.

When you cast Dominate spells, you can command otherwise evil enemies to do acts of good.

When you cast Illusion spells, it rather depends on what you use them for.

Devious =! evil. Chaotic Good is probably one of the more logical Beguiler alignments.

I suppose. I've just always considered coercian to be a reasonably evil act as it takes away free choice. Even charming an individual removes their free will in a small way. The PHB2 does a nice job of justifying it by saying that some part of them must have wanted to do it (whatever you're getting them to do) anyway, however small that part may have been.

We also have a CE barbarian/bard in the party who will share many of my abilities. Our interactions are going to be pretty interesting, I reckon.

Free choice is just as much ethics as it is morality. As a CG beguiler, you will probably prefer your charm spells and illusions over your dominate spells, but you aren't going to be foolish and just drop a part of your already limited spellcasting altogether.

I have to wonder why anyone can think that, in this context, "CE" and "party" can be said in the same sentence.

Oh well. That will play out in it's own way.

We have some newer players who are experimenting. Only three people in our group are really experienced, and two of us are DMing right now. We probably should have set alignment restrictions, but maybe it's best to let them learn the hard way. Either way, it's kinda getting a bit annoying to me both as a player and as a DM because so few of the characters ever really work together, and group planning and cooperation has always been one of my favorite aspects of the game. Now we have to watch who collects treasure, how much they get, and whether or not it's split evenly. I hate having to do that.
