Changing alignement [Archive] - Wizards Community

01-25-04, 10:08 AM I have a Lawful-evil character at 6th. lvl., and is considering changing alignement to neutral. I know what it says under ATONEMENT, but what will happen with my character in terms of spells? I know I will loose my diety spells, but otherwize, what is the "punishment"?

01-25-04, 12:47 PM Radical alignment shifts really only hurt clerics. Since a cleric has to be within one alignment shift of their diety, a LE --> NN alignment shift would only work well if the diety was LN or NE.

If the diety was LE, the cleric would have to find a new patron diety and perform a quest to demonstrate he is worthy of receiving divine guidance.

01-26-04, 01:45 AM It should be noted that, as a rule, you don't decide to be neutral and overnight it happens. You, as a character, simply act less evil, more self interested, but not at the expense of others. This shifts your alignment to neutral over time.
In theory, alignment is always in flux, though with most characters, they stay true enough to their original decision that it is never an issue.
If you want to be neutral, act neutral. If you keep acting LE, it doesn't matter what you say your alignment is if your DM is doing their job. Conversely, if you start acting more true neutral, your DM should shift you that way.
As far as the diety issue goes, you will have to find one who will accept you. You will probably need to do some sort of service to prove your sincerity, then it should be all good. I am operating under the assumption that you are a divine caster. Your DM may have some plot concerning all of this in the works already.

I don't mean for the first part of this post to sound like an attack of any sort, it's just that alignment is becoming a pet peeve of mine with some of the threads floating around here.
