We use some variants, like nat one on attacks and saves is just -10, and your con score is the amount you can go below 0. But these were all agreed on before the game started. One member was looking on SrD and found faults, I don't like them or the idea of them but he presented it to the DM and the DM responded by saying that we should change all of our characters giving them faults and traits. I like to keep the rules and I'm pretty sure that changing our characters in mid game isn't really going with them. I told him my concern and he said "You hold too much to the rules." Now not only do I dislike the sudden change, I also dislike faults and traits themselves. You want you're character to be weak and not good at melee fighting good for you, the reward is you have a more in depth back-story which should be reward enough. Do you see everybody that is scared more easily having all these extra abilities because of it? "Oh man I'm mentally retarded, but god felt sorry for me so now I can rapid shot a bow!" What do you suggest for me to tell my DM encouraging him to not change these rule? our party is very large 7 players and two DMs (one found faults other agreed to have them) |

Maybe non-combatant if you are a ranged-focused or caster, but I try to avoid attack penalties at all costs (missing by 1 is a pain). Many melee characters would take Shaky, as they never plan to use ranged weapons in the first place. Some players love using flaws, because in return for the flaw you get a bonus feat. I don't allow them in my game, because you would only pick one you don't care about, and then choose a feat that you do care about, which makes you stronger by a bit. And I think it is dumb. Traits are neat, but it is the same thing, you will take what gives you the most bang for your buck. I would say you should not have to take a flaw as these are optional and (theoretically) should be balanced with a normal character. As for Traits, they are minor but you still shouldn't have to take them. If he must implement this, just make the best of it, and choose ones which impact you the least. |
