| chaos1018707-24-06, 10:37 PM | Greetings, Last night at our game I was a bit disappointed. To give you a better understanding ill give you a quick run down of my character. I am playing a Chaotic Neutral Human Swashbuckler. We play in a time of finese and dexterity instead of "I have the biggest sword and amazing armor, i win." So I figured a swashbuckler and then pretiege into a Dervish would be a fun way to go. My character was raised by a mercenary guild, and I wrote in my story line that he kept to himself and learned independence. Sought only after himself, because there was no one else there (by choice). His train of thought usually goes along the line "Meh, if it seems like a good idea at the time." Ok, now on with my little problem. Last night when we played we came up to this HUGE room with alot of gold, items, etc. My party immediatly realized this could be a dragon encounter. So I (having the best move silently/listien) looked around and saw a dragon. (The dm showed me and me only as so I could play my character accordingly, it was a juevenile I think). I had a TOUGH decision weither to tell my party there was or wasnt a dragon, or to lie about size, etc because from my perspective this looked like a BAD idea. But, i caved and told them and of course they wanted to fight it. Now I dont want be a jerk and just say "I dun wanna fight, ill just go this way, BYE!" but isnt that kinda what Chaotic Neutral is? Or is my conception incorrect? I understand CN is VERY tough to play, but I wanted a challenge and thought it would be fun. Sorry it is so long, just wanted to cover everything so I could get better feedback :D |

They're known to serve their own interests. TN could also come to this conclusion, seeing it as the better idea at the time. |

Not sure what I was thinking. Thanks for the input. See, I think my problem is, I sometimes don't play to the full extent to make things run smoother and without big problems. If that had happened my party would have failed, and my DM would have more then likely noted that an evil action. "You abondoned your party when they were in need and they were seriously wounded/killed because of it." |

You could work out the alignment issue by saying that your character felt it was in his best interest to keep his groupmates alive (they're going to attack the dragon no matter what he does). Or you could just be CN "with good tendencies". Likewise, even if your DM does consider leaving them an evil act, CN people do evil things from time to time, they do good things too, they're just not committed to either. I hope that helps a little. |

I hope that helps a little. I find that I need to tread carefully, another incident happened a few weeks ago. Being a swashbuckler, my dm said that was cool, but there are 2 main swashbuckler followings in this settings. Elven and Pirates. My character studied the ways of Elven. So anyway, small story time. We are on our way on a ship to a set of isles that is inhabited by the elves (what kind are unknown to me at the time) so I can further my skills in my class, and we come across a pirate ship. Make a long story short we came close, stormed and took prisoners (including the captain). So, the paladin in our party tries to interogate him, meanwhile im in the cargo hold taking what might be useful to me, along with a sum of gold and I join the paladin. With no luck on interogating I simply draw my weapon and kill him and walk out. My reasoning is I have a distilled hatred for pirates, because IM the best, and they are nothing(Swashbucklers are arrogant, and feel their way of fighting is superiour to everyone else). I also feared that with the captain alive and not speaking would be dangerous esp with his crew still alive. The paladin and cleric IMMEDIATLY jump my case claiming "injustice". Was this action out of line? |
| Paxar07-24-06, 11:21 PM | Ok, it wasn't out of line to have the motivation you described. And, if the paladin and cleric weren't there it wouldn't be out of line to do just what you did, but your character was probably aware that they would react that way. Just be more aware of your situation. Wait until they leave, kill the captain, and get everyone off the ship before they find out. Your character, being CN, is probably not going to want to get on the bad side of his companions (especially the healers), it's not in his best interest. I'd say at this point, even making a superficial apology would be in order. CN doesn't mean that you're going to act the way you want and screw what people think. It means you're going to find the best way to do what you want while profiting the most by it (note: I don't mean by the use of the word "profiting" that you're overly concerned with money). |
