| Drexlorn02-08-04, 05:28 PM | Greetings, Recently I completed this character I'll play with and I would like to receive any comments on how good or bad is the char and how I should play it or optimize it regarding his progression in levels. Since it'll be my first 3ed game, I don't know how it'll be to play this character, it's a new experience. Any advice will be greatly appreciated. If you have better suggestions about the character creation, skills, feats or traits for example, just let me know and I may be able to ask my DM for correction since we didn't begin yet and the background is not completed anyway. It's time to get the thing right before it's too late. So, come out you 3ed experts and share your knowledge and wisdom! Thank you! ------------------------------- Character sheet ------------------------------ Name: Jolvar Sarenor Class : paladin 1 Race : human Sexe : m Alignment : Lawful good Deity : Heroneus Str: 16......(+3) Dex: 8.......(-1) Cons: 12....(+1) Int: 10......(+0) Wis: 14.....(+2) Char: 16....(+3) Saves: fort +6 / ref +2 / will +5 PV: 11 CA: 15 Base attack bonus: +1 Initiative: -1 Weapon: long sword (+5 attack bonus, +3 damage) Armor: chain shirt ( +4 CA, dex max +4, -2 armor penalty) ..........large steel shield ( +2 CA, -2 armor penalty) Skills: number in () is the final score with traits bonus or other. What has he done noteworthy? other than that, your character looks good. You might be spreading too thin in your skills. Might want to focus on less skills. Also, Sense Motive is a great Paladin skill. |
| primemover00302-08-04, 09:53 PM | I agree with adiaven... A PC with no character concept might as well just be a Construct. A walking stat block. Give us the type of paladin you want to play. It seems you want to be a mounted warrior. OK are you more cavalier or something of a noble Horse nomad? |

Of the skills that you have purchased only Knowledge(religion) cannot be used untrained... so the single ranks in skills that are not core are probably never going to make a difference. To make your skill worthwhile you need to focus, especially since the random factor is a d20! Since you are only getting 3 skill points per level, you should pick 1 or 2 skills that you want to be really good at and focus your spending on those. For example; you want to be a spectacular mounted combatant and decide to focus on Ride (4 ranks), you also want to put 4 ranks into handle animal, since it provides a +2 synergy bonus once you get 5 ranks in it (you probably don't need more). The reason to focus on this so much is that your mounted combat feat allows you to prevent a hit to your mount if you beat the attack roll with your ride check. If you don't put a lot of skill points into your ride skill, it won't make a difference very often. As an emmisary of Heroneus, and you also want to persuade others to join your cause you put 2 each ranks into Knowledge(religion) and diplomacy. Your initial allottment put a lot of ranks into Heal. This is a relatively weak skill since magic can do it better. If you want to be more of a people person aiding those less fortunate, you could put 4 ranks in heal, 4 into diplomacy, 1 into Knowledge(religion) {so you aren't using it untrained} and the other 3 into Ride (to get the benefit of your feat... skip handle animal if you go this route it's too expensive if you are not trying to max out your riding skills) |
| Ehelonna02-08-04, 11:27 PM | Originally posted by adiaven What has he done noteworthy?Probably not much... you might notice that his XP=0. Long illustious back stories about how your character saved the world are not appropriate for first level characters. Though I have heard some that would imply that they character should be at least 7th level by now. :D There should be something Jolvar, the 4th son of a landed knight, was torn between joining the clergy or the army. After hearing about a group of paladins, he decided that this was the path for him. but not that much more. If he has done significant things in the past he would have some experience. Other things to add might be a bit more of a family or cultural background (his father being a landed knight covers a lot of that though) and some idea about how he sees his goals would also be nice. p.s. Drexlorn, you might also want to check out the character optimization boards... the people over there are all about making the character be able to do everything you want. |

| The_Newborn02-09-04, 05:30 AM | You won't need more than 5 ranks in K:religeon and say 10 in heal. Ditch the craft skills till you actually have access to the materials and a forge. concentration you can start pumping at lvl4 but you'll have access to to too few spells per day that you'd either cast them before or after entering melee. |
| NZCardinal02-09-04, 06:23 AM | Str: 16......(+3) Dex: 8.......(-1) Cons: 12....(+1) Int: 10......(+0) Wis: 14.....(+2) Char: 16....(+3) Realistic stat rolls :D I'd say you probably aren't a filthy lying cheat and I congratulate you for it. All too often I see a character where the lowest stat is, say, a 14. Stats can *sometimes* help you build a characters personality, especially if you think about it in some relation to his alignment;eg... His strength is 16, I can assume your LG paladin has worked hard labouring in noble service to his faith or leige before he took up life as a paladin. His intelligence is 10, he's no fool, and probably quite humble, finding strength in faith rather than books or sciences. His dexterity is 8, every now and then in a tavern he accidently swats someone with his sword-sheath ;) |
| Grand_Commander1302-09-04, 11:51 AM | He's using a 32 point buy. The paladin I made was 14-10-14-12-12-16. He maxed knowledge: religion, ride, knowledge: war (this is a friend's character, and his backstory gave me a reason to make it, and give it to him only as a class skill), and diplomacy. Since there's a party cleric, and he worships a god of war and strength, there's no reason for him to have heal, so I didn't bother. It all depends on your character and why he is where is is though. But yeah, definitely don't water down your skills so much. |
| Drexlorn02-10-04, 05:36 PM | Greetings, Thank you for all the advices, I'm surprised to had so many answers. I'll go check the character dev and optmize now. :)) |
