The Common Character Archetypes
Hero/Anti-hero: The Protagonist goes on a journey/The Protagonist is subject to the forces of change.
Mentor: The Benefactor imparts knowledge.
Herald: Brings a Message/ Announces the Hero
Shapeshifter: The Character who is revealed to be something else.
Trickster: The ChaosBringer/The Comic Relief.
Shadow: That which must be overcome.

Taking a quick look at the new STARDUST film (A D&D style FANTASY) The Hero is announced by the shooting star in his desire to seek it for his loved one.
To seek the Shooting star he must pass through the hole in the wall that separates the village from the world beyond - to do so he must get past the Threshold Guardian.
The Shooting star (a young lady who falls from the sky) is therefor the Herald.
The Mentor is the old sky pirate traveling about in his airship -he imparts direction and knowledge.
The Witch sent to destroy the hero and herald (sent by the Coven) is the Shapeshifter.
The Coven itself serves as the Chaos Bringer or Trickster yet is also the Shadow.
This is confused by the Dark Prince who is also the Shadow but is infact an Anti-hero - he seeks the Herald for himself.

Hm.

I'm not quite sure how to comment on this without giving away too much of the story, so I won't.

Suffice to say: read the book before going to see the movie. Though I'm sure the movie will be wonderful (Neil was involved in the production from my understanding), Gaimen's prose is simply not to be missed. Ferinstance. (http://www.neilgaiman.com/exclusive/shortstories/partiesstorytext/)
