Ok, my dilemma is this:

I originally wanted to create a dual hand crossbow wielding human rogue/shadowdancer, with the Quick Draw and Rapid Reload feats so I could quickly switch to melee if need be. I realize this isn't an optimal build, but I was following more of a concept. Then I realized all the redundancies involved in being a rogue/shadowdancer, as well as the conflict in feats I wanted and feats I needed to qualify for my prestige class.

I'm looking for a new way to develop my rogue (keeping in mind I'm the party's only means of lock-picking/trap-disarming) that's novel and, if at all possible, effective. Any suggestions?

Well while I would definately say, take a closer look at the shadowdancer as an option (I've played one myself and enjoyed it immensely) you could also look at the thief acrobat from Complete Warrior, it's the ultimate skill monkey class and can really make the difference when it comes to keeping alive.

If you can though I really really would recommend the shadowdancer, even if only for a two level dip. The darkvision and hide in plain sight abilities are just so useful it's ridiculous and even though they may not gel perfectly with your character concept most of the pre-reqs for the PrC are nonetheless useful for a rogue to have.

If you want to dump the hand-crossbows in favour of daggers or darts you could also take a look at the Master Thrower (also CW I think) which has some really tasty tricks and automatically gives you quick draw as a bonus feat. But it does fall a little short in the skill monkey department meaning it should be chosen with care.

One thing I can also recommend is grabbing a two level fighter dip for the bonus feats, yes you loose two levels of skills but that'll just be the difference between taking ten and taking twenty occasionally and it can really open up your options by getting some of the pre-req feats wrapped up early on.

Thanks, Dei, I really appreciate the feedback. I'll take a closer look at that.
