I had an idea for a character and I want to know if this is too over the top.

I am a warforged (sentient golem) from the Eberon setting. However, there was a fluke in the creation forges that made me self-aware, this is not normal for warforged in this campaign.

I was shipped off to a warrior academy, where I was brutally used for sparing/spell practice every day and fixed at night to do it again the next day. Seeing the other (non intelligent) warforged did not complain, I didn’t either. I didn’t know that I was the only “awakened’ one. Eventually I couldn’t take it anymore and actually fought back using the skills I leaned from long days of target practice, killing a student. I then escaped from the school and went into hiding. I now wander the world fighting oppression and looking for other intelligent warforged.

I am chaotic a good, fighter/warmage.

Normal Eberron rules - all (modern) warforged are awakened. It seems a bit misguided to ask this forum if you can play an awakened warforged in a campaign where warforged have been house-ruled to be non-awakened. Only your DM can answer that.

As Nom said, since the world you are playing in has been house ruled as having no awakened warforged, you will have to check with your DM about whether or not you will be able to play the character.

As far as the concept goes I like it, doesn't seem over the top to me at all. Have you worked out much in the way of personality for the character?

If you haven't then try thinking about things like, does he hate the people who had him at the academy? Is he afraid of them? How long has it been since he made his escape? If it hasn't been long does he have a well formed personality or is he still learning about himself and the world?

The whole wandering the world thing does seem a little contrived, but that realy depends on how you flesh out the character.

and play him like Data from Star Trek???

I think your guy should be Lawful.... if he stood there and took his punishment every day just because he thought he was supposed to..... a Chaotic character would have snuck out the first night!

Even better if he accepts the first principle of robots "Do no harm to humans"

Hard to roleplay, though.... a bit of a challenge...

I would also suggest Lawful, but maybe change the background to say that you befriended a student and they told you that the other Warforged were not "awakened". He/She then helped you escape (could be another party member if you want a connection pre-game start or they stayed behind to finish their training).

Obviously you will be treated as an item, so if the DM doesn't have a problem with everything this entails (and you don't either), then have fun.
