I've got a bunch of spare time lately, and I was going to create my character but I don't want anyone to be concerned about my stats because I was alone when I rolled them. Thoughts? Opinions? |
| Good Agnostic01-06-06, 03:04 PM | Ask your DM. Personally, I think that folks who roll for attribute scores need to do it at the table. If all the players have free time at home and table time is sparse, I would suggest using a point buy system. |
| Elemental_Elf01-06-06, 03:23 PM | Point Buy is better and far more fair. Also noone will ever accuse you of cheating. Point Buy is superior in every way to rolls. |
| cambric01-06-06, 03:30 PM | As a dm, I expect you to roll in front of me or at least with 2 other people. I've gone to point buy now, so it is moot. But, if your DM has said that you are rolling, you would feel horrible if you got unbelievable high stats and then try to have everyone believe you! You could be the most honest person in the world, but you walked in with super high stats, I would smile and say, "now do it in front of us." Cam |

| Tempest Stormwind01-06-06, 03:51 PM | What's the Point Buy System? It's detailed in the DMG. Basically, ability scores start at 8, and you get a pool of points with which to increase them. The costs aren't always even (i.e. the cost to go from 8 to 9 is not the same as the cost to go from 17 to 18), but they apply to everyone. This way, the DM can say "We're doing a high-powered game. High-powered point buy (32 points) is in effect." instead of having to be there for all the rolls. |
| trapspringer01-06-06, 03:51 PM | You get (by default 25) points to spend on you abilities. The cost breakdown is as follows: 08 - 00 09 - 01 10 - 02 11 - 03 12 - 04 13 - 05 14 - 06 15 - 08 16 - 10 17 - 13 18 - 16 The ability is on the left and its cost is on the right. You apply racial and level based modifiers last, so races with such bonuses and characters starting above level four all have an even greater advantage. Basically, if you ever played KotR, its like that. If you haven't, go buy KotR! |
| Bruunwald01-06-06, 07:25 PM | This will really be a question for your DM, as some have stated. Ask for his/her method for creating a character, and how he feels about you rolling one up when you're bored. Personally, I have three players who I would never question to fairly create characters. I trust them totally. The fourth MUST generate them in front of me. He cheats and everyone knows it. On the other hand, I'm sure we all know how you feel: you want to get into the game, and by yourself, there's only one way to do that as a player: generate characters. You could always roll a bunch up for fun, and see if your DM approves of one. But don't get too attached to the others. And don't be surprised if he wants to adjust it, or have you re-roll it. If you really have a creative yen and must roll and generate, you might consider DMing your own thing on the side. That's one of the secret joys of being a DM: You get to make as many characters as you want, and you get to involve yourself in the game even when nobody is around. Ohhhhhh yeahhhhh... |
| SimianShaw01-06-06, 07:25 PM | Personally, I have never been a fan of the point buy system, unless I'm playing a video game. When left alone, I seem to always be able to roll up sheets with an average score of 16 ;) . Guess I'm just lucky like that. Tepid sarcasm aside, rolling up stats with the other players is just the way I would go. At least for me, it is one of the few events that smacks of 2nd Edition. Pardon the ravings of an olde head, m'lords. |
