ok when rolling up a level 20 char how do you roll hit points and do magic items play a roll in the total amount you have ?

like do you figure up HPs before items or after ?

right now i have a 20 base con as a barbarian and a +6 con item which gives an enchantment bonus.

-The best way to make a character above 1st-level is to simply create the character as if he were 1st level. Then, make him 2nd, then 3rd, 4th, and so on. If you simply try to create the character at 20th level, making mistakes calculating the correct number of skill points, and hit points is easy- especially considering that during all of this time, your stats will be going up.

-As for the HP, the items should only affect the final total you have- not every level. In other words, you should not be getting an extra 6 HP (this is an arbitrary number representing the bonus HP from an item/items) for every level. You only apply those extra HP at the end.

When I created my 20th level character, I rolled his stats. Then, I placed them where they needed to go. After this, I did the BAB and Saves. Next, came the skills, which were pretty painful since I multiclassed, and had a PrC. I did separate the skill points for each class, though, which made it easier. The feats were next, on the list. After I chose my feats, I started buying my magic items. Once I had all my magic items, weapons, armor, etc., I corrected everything to which the magic items pertained. I did the attack bonus for the weapons after I had my magic items. Once all this was completed, I figured my HP. There are many ways to do this:

A. AVG + CON
B. roll 20dX + CON
C. start at max, work down to half, back to max, down to half, etc. + CON
D. you get the idea.
E. Ask your DM how he wants you to do it

This would be the case if you do not know simple math. While this is the safest way of preventing mistakes, it will take you forever, and you will need a new character sheet before you start playing due to all the erasing.

Technically, it can be done either way. Again, this is simple math. I can add 6HP at each level, or I can multiply 6HP * 20 lvls at the end. The result will still be 120HP.

Stat boosts for Intelligence (pertaining to skills) are the only areas that need to be handled separately since they are not retroactive.

thank you both.

I knew intelgence from magic items didn't give extra skills points but i wasn't sure about con and the skills i wasn't worried about because the class and PrC all have the same class skills so that was very simple to figure out

-Well, like you said, it is the best way of preventing errors of any kind, whether it be HP, skill points, feats, or whatever. And, in a strange kind of way, it is fun to build up your character from scratch, and keep on leveling him up. Yeah, it is a time consuming pain though...

I usually do it one level at a time. I don't use a char sheet, but plain paper, and list everything gained at each level. It might take a few sheets for higher levels, but it helps you keep everything straight, and gives you a record if your DM wants to see how you did it.

-Yeah, a rogue with a high INT score has an unbelieveable amount of skill points at 20th level. It is nice to have an actual record with you when someone challenges the validity of things like skill points, or number of feats, and so on.
