| BIG NASTY09-02-04, 11:55 PM | i'm interested in playing a mystic theurge, any ideas one wich class i should start with? or should i go with wizard, or sorcer? an what kinds of weapons and feats would be most optimal...i'd hate to powergame but i'm lookin to really get all i can outta this character i want him to eventually to be a serious contender, like Elminster, or even Dumbledor! lol |
| Ma'ElKoth09-03-04, 01:30 AM | I would go with a Wizard/Cleric, since as a MT you are going for versatility and number of spells, rather than huge effect spells. As for feats, Spellcasting Prodigy in Wisdom and Intelligence is a good place to start, but very munchkiny. In terms of other feats, spell focus and other spellcasting feats that span both classes and do not increase spell levels are good. An alternate build is Favored Soul (from Complete Divine) and Sorcerer. This has the benefit of having only one spellcasting attribute: charisma. The rest is all downside though. You lose out on 9th level spells until 21+. You have a limited selection of spells, and you can not become a MT until level 9. On the other hand you will be able to cast a buttload of spells per day. As to weapons and armor: none and none. You are a mage. You have a minescule advantage in terms of hp (about 6) and base attack (about 1). Maybe get a missile weapon or two, but since you will be casting dozens of spells per day, why bother? |
| Student Of The Mind09-03-04, 01:30 AM | Start cleric, to get the additional HP. I dont know the world you're playing, or anything else about your character so that's all I can really say. Also I would use the wizard unless you just wanna blast stuff, if you wanna be the "mobile artillery platform" then you wanna go with the sorcerer. Just my take on things. :tiphat: |
| Ma'ElKoth09-03-04, 01:35 AM | I feel like I need to say this: If you want to be a mobile artillery platform, be an elementalist. MTs are support characters. Their save DCs are too low (both from lack of specializaton and from losing out on 3 caster levels preping for the class) and they lack the PrC buffing that most spellcasters grab along the way. |
| Sildatorak09-03-04, 03:07 AM | You might want to go to the Character Optimization boards to get the best advice on this…they make some sick s:censored: over there. You might want to consider taking "Practiced Spellcaster" from Complete Divine to raise your caster level. I don't know if it is worth it, though, since you won't be getting any bonus feats. |
| monkeywrench09-03-04, 01:08 PM | I'm playing a Mystic Theurge in an Acquatic Campaign we're doing at the moment. I had to do so because no one else wanted to play the caster. You do lose the bonus feats and familiar bonuses a Wizard gets but you get plenty of skill points and lots of spells. I took Dragon Cohort feat and got a Pseudodragon with 7 levels of Druid. So now I have access to all three major spell lists. :D Your very first action in every combat should be to cast Spectral Hand, so you can still heal everyone and stay back far enough to unleash Fireball doom. |
| tarkin09-03-04, 01:32 PM | I like Sorceror/Cleric Combination. The Sorceror takes the "prime" arcane spells, and uses the Cleric spells to get the utility stuff. Another idea is to do Bard/Druid. |
