Hey Folks,

I am curious what you guys use to create your characters? I am looking for a program that will allow me to make characters. I really do not want to have to do it by hand. Do you guys know of any? What do you do?

I still use E-Tools, it doesn't have any of the newer books but works ok for me and I can usually put most of the new stuff in with a database program.

I can make up to level 10 characters in 30 minutes so I don't use special things.

Paper, Pencil (incase of a mistake) and the books I plan on using for making the character, oh yeah and some dice.

10 min later character of any level, any class.

This. add in another 10 minutes if it's a level 12+ caster. Spell choices take some time.

I leave it up to the players, but I now encourage them to do it by hand. The reason is that I found that when the generators were not used they HAD NO CLUE what the process was. The software was not just eliminating the drudgery - it was eliminating the knowledge and understanding of the game mechanics altogether. Seriously. They didn't know how many skill points they gained, if their saves changed, if they gained BAB, etc., nor even where to LOOK IT UP. It was very disillusioning.

Not to mention that the generators build horrid characters. I once had a sorcerer that took toughness and weapon focus - spear.

I second the pathguy.com one
I use it more for a baseline for pc's I want to make, but mostly I use it as a quick way to generate NPC's (saves paging through books except for spells later on)
if u just go to pathguy.com and scroll down he has basic 3.5 generators, and ones for 4 or so specific campagin worlds it's pretty good.

I have no idea where to find it, but there's a program called Redblade that gives you a lot more input into the character generation program and just does the calculations for you. That would be way better for a player, because those automatic ones are really only good for quick NPCs.

Personally I try to find an awesome gimmick, then try to build a charrie based on that (although I try to make it less gimmicky) i.e. make a sorcerer who only takes touch spells, and delivers them via high fives :D

You can find redblade by going to google and searching 'redblade character generator'

But yea if i'm making a PC i like to sit and do it myself w/the dice and books and all that. but i use generators for npc's alot as it's alot quicker.

I have honed my craft down to 20 mnutes for non-casters, 30 minutes for non-wizards and 45 minutes for wizards.
