| Jaybness01-02-07, 05:57 AM | Hey all, I am in the middle of an awesome campaign with a good DM and fun players. I have a few questions I would like to have some input on, though. I have been allowed to take the Monkey Grip feat on a Greatsword (M size), allowing my character to wield it one handed. I realize that this may not be the right feat set to do this. First question: which feat set would allow me to do this, and if any, what penalties are associated? In terms of feats, my character is looking to be the primary damage dealer and also a bit of a tank. I have WF (Greatsword), Endurance/Diehard and Point Blank Shot for ranged attacks (not the best of feats, I realize). I plan on taking Power Attack at 6th level (fighter), since my BAB is a bit higher. I am struggling on what feat path to take, since SO many are available to Fighters and Rogues (damage, sneak attacks, defense, etc.) I know that most people are going to ask "What do you see your character doing?", to which I'd respond, "Being strong, dealing damage and protecting his friends (his party and he are friends who have grown up together)." Some Info about my character: Race: Human Base Scores (32-point buy and a Family Heirloom Ring (+2 STR)) are: 18STR, 15DEX, 16CON, 10INT, 10WIS, 10CHA Equipment: MW Greatsword, +1 Studded Leather Armor, +1 AC Ring, Heavy Steel Shield, Mighty Composite +1 Shortbow Abilities: Same as any other Fighter3/Rogue2 :D |

Why Rogue? I'm not questioning your choice just curious, as the tank I wouldn't think you would have much opportunity to sneak attack. you might want to look into improved faint, and possibly cleve. Monkey grip is the only feet I know of that lets you do that But I always thought it was more for large weapons. |
| Firestar2701-02-07, 08:48 AM | Monkey grip would allow you to weild a Large Greatsword in 2 hands. Not a medium greatsword in 1 hand. To do something similar to that, you need an epic feat. |
| Dei01-02-07, 12:38 PM | Monkey grip would allow you to weild a Large Greatsword in 2 hands. Not a medium greatsword in 1 hand. To do something similar to that, you need an epic feat. From Complete Warrior: "For instance a Large Longsword is a two handed weapon for a medium creature without this feat. For a medium creature that has this feat, it is considered a one-handed weapon." (page 104 in the feat description) From PhB A Small greatsword is considered a one-handed weapon for a medium creature or a light weapon for a large creature. (page 113 in weapon size) Since under these rules a medium greatsword is considered to be the same as a large longsword by the rules of who can wield it then the application of the feat is obvious. Yes Monkey Grip does allow you to wield a Medium Greatsword in one hand, albeit with a -2 penalty. As for Feat trees well if you've already taken monkey grip I would suggest taking a Large Greatsword and wielding that in two hands. Then take the weapon focus tree to up how often you hit. Apart from these, if you've got the stats for it it's always fun to grab combat expertise and the improved feats that come with it, improved trip and improved disarm can really mess people about and make it much easier to beat them down. There's nothing like dealing 3d6 + 2xstrength with each hit to really whittle an opponent down to size. At your level you'll probably also be one-hitting casters if you roll well and that can quickly swing things in your favour. If you want to be imaginative you could try taking the two weapon fighting tree. Wield the greatsword as a one-handed weapon in your primary with a longsword wielded as a light weapon in your offhand and you'll really start hurting people. Problem will be hitting them though as all the penalties for Monkey gripping and two weapon fighting will be cumulative so if your DM likes things with high AC I'd avoid this route. Anyway, good luck. |
| Jaybness01-02-07, 01:59 PM | Why Rogue? I'm not questioning your choice just curious, as the tank I wouldn't think you would have much opportunity to sneak attack. you might want to look into improved faint, and possibly cleve. I took Rogue as more of a storyline thing. Our Party is very close, so cross-classing with another PC's main made sense at the time. The Rogue and I are constantly working together to take down creatures (flanking), so I figured I'd snag a lil' bonus from it, and why not pick up Evasion in the process. |

I've basically got a "writer's block" in advancing my character. I've joked about even wielding two greatswords (medium sized). It's not a totally accurate comparison, but it somehow reminds me of Cloud from FF7. :) |
| Paneki01-02-07, 02:19 PM | Quite probably you are just getting started into the adventure. On the Feats: Power attack is good since lvl 3 or two, since gives you acces to Cleave. You can kill multiple enemies at once. You can even have it at lvl 1 to kill a lot of guys quickly. I know your BAB is not too great (yet) but you as levels go up so its your BAB. Besides, you don't have to use the Power Attack in every attack. If you get the Monkey Grip I hope is to keep your shield and a better AC. but having a Great sword two handed also increases the damage by 1.5. Don't change it if you don't want. Just keep it in mind. If you are going melee, stop the Range weapon progression until you are a higher level and Chose Weapon Specialization Greatsword and GWF Greatsword, GWS Greatsword. If you want some kind of hybrid, Precise Shot, Rapid shot and Many shot are all good options. Point Blank shot is taken so you can have a little bonus and to gain access to those feats. If you want to, you can multiclass to a Barbarian instead of a Fighter to have a better uncanny dodge and keep the BAB of the fighter. You can also multiclass to a Fighter/Rogue/Barbarian which may not be so bad. |

Wrong I'm afraid. Weapon equivalences in the DM's guide is what you want. Basically the greatsword is a large longsword. Longswords can be wielding in one hand so with monkey grip he can use the greatsword one handed. |

| Puca01-02-07, 02:40 PM | Defintely take Power Attack. Even if it isnt always the best thing to use, it quailfies you for lots of other stuff. Weapon Focus is the same sort of thing. +1 isnt much, but it will qualify you for other feats. Look at Able Learner from Races of Destiny. I think you can only take that at first level, but it is a boon when multi-classing rogues. Combat Brute (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/ex/20031205a) and Shock Trooper are both decent feats. The new fighter feats in PHBII are certainly worth a look. Leap attack from CAdv is nice too. |
| FeceMan01-02-07, 05:40 PM | Tips: No odd fighter levels. Skillmonkey levels should be taken at first level (if you are taking them). Monkey grip is a bad feat. Just wield a sword one-handed and describe it as being huge. Take a third rogue level for more sneak attack. Endurance = fail. Shock trooper + leap attack = win. There are good feats for fighters in the PHB II. For tanking and sneak attack, you're SOL except for blackguard and shadowbane inquisitor. Get feats like improved disarm if you're taking many fighter levels. |
| Jaybness01-02-07, 08:35 PM | I just wanted to type a quick note encouraging people to keep posting. I've received a lot of really good advice for char concepts, etc, and I truly appreciate it. If you have a wacky idea for this char, type it; it might just be what I am looking for. Thanks a ton, everyone :) |
| Dei01-02-07, 10:09 PM | I've considered this heavily; in this consideration is where my problem lies. Fighters are SO amazing in that they can be specialized so many ways. I've basically got a "writer's block" in advancing my character. I've joked about even wielding two greatswords (medium sized). It's not a totally accurate comparison, but it somehow reminds me of Cloud from FF7. :) First point, this is a bad thing how? :P As for writers block, look at the character personality. Is he a stoic, straightforward type? Greatsword and large tower shield, no nonesense here. Is he a flamboyant, slightly showy character? Dual wield all the way, the more outrageous the better. Is he a passionate fighter? Hit em hard and make em feel the anger with a Large greatsword. Perhaps he's a bit careful? Heavy armour and shield specialisations. A good idea can be to look at his deity, how do they appear when they fight? Tymora? He's going to be lightly armoured and highly mobile, concentrating on hit and run. Kord? Concentrate totally on dishing out the hurt. St Cuthbert? Look at how to take hits and still be standing to hit em back, heavy armour and big shields. If you do go for heavy armour you won't need your high Dex so swap that with intelligence to not only net yourself some extra skill points but also open up the intelligence requirements for combat expertise and the improved feats as well as a bunch of the special feats from Complete Warrior (read it, know it, learn to love it). Hope this helps |
| Orchomenos01-03-07, 11:10 AM | Here's an idea: Ask the DM to change Monkey Grip to Exotic Weapon Proficiency: Bastard Sword. Then take levels of Exotic Weapon Master. Select the Uncanny Blow stunt that allow you to use the 1-handed exotic weapon (Bastard Sword) in two hands and add twice your STR modifier instead of 1.5 time. |
| Jaybness01-03-07, 08:22 PM | As for writers block, look at the character personality. Kel (my character's first name) is a devoted-to-his-friends type. He's has a defender's mentality, but he defends by destroying everything hostile before they have a chance to hurt his friends. So his best defense is a strong offense, I guess. I'm thinking two medium sized greatswords with TWF, or something like that; that sounds like a lot of fun :) As for Kel's deity, he ironically doesn't have one for the moment. He has more of an Agnostic view on Gods right now, though his adventures often keep him up at night thinking about spiritual things. |
| Magrus01-03-07, 10:01 PM | So his best defense is a strong offense, I guess. I'm thinking two medium sized greatswords with TWF, or something like that; that sounds like a lot of fun :) Be prepared for at least a -4 penalty to each hand with that. Which means, you will NEED WF and GWF and an obscene Str in order to hit melee type enemies that will be a challenge for your party. Getting swarmed by low power enemies, that will own them. Getting faced with a high powered, single enemy? You will be swinging and never hitting like that though. |
| Jaybness01-03-07, 10:05 PM | Be prepared for at least a -4 penalty to each hand with that. Even with Weapon Focus (Greatsword), Monkey Grip, Two Weapon Fighting, and Oversized Two Weapon Fighting? (My DM said I don't need to take the normal -2 to hit from Monkey Grip, btw) What am I looking at penalty wise there? |
| Dei01-04-07, 07:05 PM | With the two weapon fighting feat you're looking at a flat -4 in each hand since you treat the greatswords as medium weapons and don't take the monkey grip penalty. Oversized two weapon fighting turns this into a -2 in each hand. Weapon focus effectively drops this to a -1 on each hand. Not bad at all considering you'll be capable of dealing 32 damage a round without crits. With crits that goes up to 64. Hehe, have fun. :D |
| Jaybness01-05-07, 09:51 PM | I think I decided on my PrC finally. I am going to focus on Dervish from Complete Combat. This PrC would let me have limited access to Great Cleave and Spring Attack (that just sounds fun); not to mention the AC/Attack Bonuses and saves that will round my character off. That, and "A Thousand Cuts" with two Greatswords will be amazing :) :) :) The only issue is that I need a 13 Intelligence to be able to take Combat Expertise. I'm working with my DM on Ability Score rebuilds to better suit this PrC. I'll keep updated on that note. |
| fanitullen01-06-07, 01:24 AM | Exotic Weapon Proficiency (Bastard Sword) Two Weapon Fighting Oversized Two Weapon Fighting Monkey Grip This would make large bastard swords one handed weapons for you. Oversized TWF would make your off-hand bastard sword count as a light weapon (seeing as a bastard sword is a one handed weapon when you've got proficiency), giving you a minus in attack the same as you would get with a long sword and a dagger (-4 -2 unless I'm mistaking), and the -2 for Monkey Grip. Add some weapon focus to get better at hitting, and power attack and cleave, and you've got a mean two weapon fighter :) ("Ok, now I've got great cleave, better put it to some use" *pommels an enemy, dropping him* *gets critical on the next guy* *reducing the third to 1 HP* suddenly no enemies left for the rest of the party :P ) Rogue lvl 1 DM, to rogue: "You see 6 orcs on horseback riding towards you (forest clearing) Rogue: "I warn the others and climb up the nearest tree" DM: "OK, make a climb check" *manages to climb up* Ranger: "I'll also climb up that tree" *fumbles* DM: "You land on your ass and are really embarassed, and the orcs are closing" *battle is engaged* Rogue: I'll jump out of the tree and onto the back of one of the horses of the orcs" DM: "OK, make a jump and a tumble check" *rolls 17 jump, 19 tumble* Rogue: "And then I stab the bastard in the back with my dagger" DM: "Roll attack then" *fumbles* Rogue: "D'oh" DM: "OK, you stab your self in the thigh" *DM rolls spot for orc* DM: "And the orc doesn't notice that you're there" Rogue: "Thank god, I hoped no-one saw that!" So much for the acrobatic rogue :p |

If you can collar a friendly caster or get boots of haste you can wreak utter havoc, particularly when you're flinging around the kinds of damage you are. |

I was hoping you'd say something to that extent. My DM seems to be considering a rebuild quest of some kind (that's totally oog, obviously), but I'm still stuck on the 13 Int for Combat Expertise. Kel is now at the point where he has a Greatsword and a Short Sword (just found it); I haven't taken TWF or anything yet so still using the Greatswords and Shield. We're close to leveling 6. TWF and Oversized TWF (if I qualify for it; need to check) will be my feats for this level. I'm slowly getting there :) |
