INVENTOR PREREQUISITES SORCERER: LEVEL 3 SPELLS: Any (The Frostrifle requires Ray of Frost) SKILLS:SPELLCRAFT, CRAFT (Gemcutting), Craft (Carpentry) FEATS: Weaponfocus(ray), Craft Wonderous Item ---------------------------<THE FROSTRIFLE>-------------------------- Frostrifle (Class 1): Range=30', Damage=1d3, Initial Enchantment Cost=1125gp Requirement: craft wonderous item, caster level 3, ray of frost spell Description: You create fifty single-use shards and fit them together into a larger crystal structure. This is the only way to differentiate this from a wand or staff and quallify it as a wonderous magic item. Frostrifle (Class 2): Range=60', Damage=1d3, Additional Enchantment Cost=+1125gp Requirement: craft wonderous item, caster level 3, Enlarge Spell feat Description: You enchant a lens to be fitted to the weapon. This is the Range Doubler Lens. Frostrifle (Class 3): Range=60', Damage=1d3+1, Additional Enchantment Cost=+2250gp Requirement: craft wonderous item, caster level 7, Empower Spell feat Description: You enchant a second lens to be fitted to the weapon. This is the Damage Intensifier Lens. Frostrifle (Class 4): Range=60', Damage=1d3+1, use Magic item as Free action (thus allowing 6 sametarget trigger pulls per six second round), Additional Enchantment Cost=+4500gp Requirement: craft wonderous item, caster level 14, Quicken Spell feat Description: You enchant a New Rifle Stock to be fitted to the weapon. This is the Highspeed Stock. Total Enchantment Cost: 9000gp -----------------------------<>--------------------------------------- Weaponfocus(ray) gives +1 to hit, weaponfinesse(ray) gives dexterity bonuses to hit. Yes I have read the rules and that was how I was able to get away with it. |
| buzzsawl07-08-07, 08:21 AM | This really isn't a template as much as it is a list of prerequisites for a PrC... I think you're gonna find that people are less willing to playtest something if they also have to build it for ya. |
| Phrennzy07-08-07, 02:11 PM | So building this 'ray gun' gets the sorcerer what? I don't see any bonus to using it over casting ray spells. Or do the lenses become simple one shot items, similar to scrolls? It is unclear. Not to mention the fact that changing out a lens and material components has got to be a full round action, which is no good for a spell caster. Your creation needs more information to receive meaningful feedback. |
| yellowdingo07-09-07, 08:48 AM | You are correct on that Phrennzy, it is going to slow them down initially, but as other feats are picked up such as quicken spell, quick draw, and combat....thingummy that grants attacks of opportunity (darn headache at worst possible time), I think the Magic "raygun" becomes something you will be able to use repeatedly in the same round. Ultimately as a character template it was an easy access version (instead of a prestiege class) where the Sorcerer becomes an inventor...playing with a weapon that is little more than a frost ray is annoying but it gives the campaign flavour. I suppose you could prepare a lens for multiuse at the cost of a multiple charge magic item. The lens wasnt actually magic (just prepared a the cost for use) The Inventor Cult As an Inventor the Sorcerer is devoted to modernising Magical technology. As the Magic will evolve, Magic missile wands will become a magic missile crossbow with a rechargable magic energy cell. The Weapon itself is just one idea, conceivably the Inventor will have their own project that they begin working on at third level and can use but must prop it up until they can make it a permanent magic item. Consider the Linguistic Translator Badge, the Wrist Communicator, Darkvision Goggles. So when that 12 year old sorcerer/inventor carries his frostrifle to the top of the town clocktower and pops a few rounds into Count von Hungry for perhaps a few points of damage down in the plaza, it will be worth the bragging rights. I know its not some hot Template like NINJA laid over your wizard character so you have a ninja with magic missile blowgun and enchanted throwing stars. It is all something that will give your Technosorcerer Image. I suppose I should give it more consideration and knock up a better testing template. |
| _Jayne_Cobb_07-09-07, 12:11 PM | Not to be rude, but what incentive is there for us to do all this work for you? |

I really don't see a benefit for taking this. There is nothing gained by creating this 'gun'. It has the same effects as casting the spell yourself. Its difficult to critique an idea that is only barely detailed. If it's just a flavor then there is no need for any sort of pre-requisite. It all becomes fluff (not that there is anything wrong with fluff) but no need for the crunch, which seems to be noticiably missing. |
| buzzsawl07-09-07, 07:45 PM | Yeah...if it's just for flavor, why not just say your wizard drops spell components into his blunderbuss and casts out the barrel. I agree w/ Phrennzy, I see no mechanical advantage of casting this way. Though it could be fun as character fluff. |
| yellowdingo07-09-07, 11:14 PM | Modified Inventor Your Inventor is devoted to improving the technology of Magic. Your devotion to Technomagic is paramount. Certainly the Frostrifle is not the only technomagic you can invent. The Inventor realy begins at third level when you can access craft wonderous item feat. skills: craft(carpentry), craft(gemcutting), spellcraft Feats:@ 1st level- Weaponfocus(ray), enlarge spell (as bonus by humans) @ 3rd level-craft wonderous item. It is here that you create: --------------------<The Frostrifle>------------------- TheMK1 frostrifle: a wooden shortrifle with a frost-ray crystal containing fifty charges (Damage:1d3, Range 30', no save)- enchantment cost 1125gp for humans with the enlarge spell feat, a lense is fitted allowing enlarge (the cost of the lense is 1125gp) 2x range. This is the MK2. The Mk2 Frostrifle Damage (1-3), Range (60') cost 2250gp Picking up Empower spell at 6th level so you can add it to the weapon at 7th level as a second lens allowing 1.5 x damage. This lens brings up two more spell levels so it has a part cost of 2250gp creating the MK3. The Mk3 Frostrifle Damage(2-4), Range (60'), Cost (4500gp) Now at 9th level you get a spare feat (so you pick up Weapon Finesse/Ray to add your dexterity bonus to attack bonuses) At 12th level you pick up Quicken Spell and once you reach 14th level you can enchant a highspeed wooden stock for the rifle allowing the weaponuse as a free action allowing it to be used in attacks of opportunity. The Highspeed stock brings your spell level up four levels so this is going to cost 4500gp in its own right creating the MK4. Mk4 Frostrifle Damage 2-4, Range 60', Usable as freeaction, cost of enchantment (9000gp) Apparently you can load on multiple enlarge feats for range so conceivably you can improve this early weapon to something along the range of 240'. Making a new weapon at 20th level will cost upward of 100,000gp for something with a range of 500'. Most importantly its component development is as a wonderous item despite the fact that you can use it like a weapon with weapon specific feats and enchant weapon bonuses. Conceivably you can augment your MK4 frost rifle to MK4 Frostrifle+5 if you are keen. More importantly it is usable by any other class. So a caster taking the time, might arm a unit of troops with frost rifles that can be used as a free action. --------------------<>------------------- |
| yellowdingo07-09-07, 11:36 PM | Yeah...if it's just for flavor, why not just say your wizard drops spell components into his blunderbuss and casts out the barrel. I agree w/ Phrennzy, I see no mechanical advantage of casting this way. Though it could be fun as character fluff. It realy is a bit of a scruffy character template, but it is something that will put your sorcerer on the Path to Technomage. All I'm Asking is you give it a try and reply as to how you thought it was. Hopefully the new version is something you will find better. |
| buzzsawl07-09-07, 11:46 PM | Woah! No weapons that attack as a free action! That's just asking for abuse From SRD online: Free Action Free actions consume a very small amount of time and effort. You can perform one or more free actions while taking another action normally. However, there are reasonable limits on what you can really do for free. Essentially meaning that you could use a full-round attack/spell + an indeterminate number of attacks w/ the laser gun. All I'm Asking is you give it a try and reply as to how you thought it was. I'm not really in a position to play-test a character right now, as we've got one more session left in our current d&d campaign, at which point we are switching systems. However...if you really want this type of character, you might need to create special abilities to make this work, rather than attempt to alter current ones. PS - By Techno Mage, do you mean the d20 modern class...or something else? |
| Phrennzy07-10-07, 11:15 AM | I wouldn't consider it a Wondrous Item. I would consider it Magic Arms, akin to a crossbow. Or, since it's basically a spell with 50 charges, isn't it just a wand? You're slapping meta magic feats on it, but it is still basically a wand. At higher levels its a staff (quickened, enlarged, 0 level spell is a level 5 1/2 effect). |
| yellowdingo07-11-07, 08:01 AM | Woah! No weapons that attack as a free action! That's just asking for abuse PS - By Techno Mage, do you mean the d20 modern class...or something else? A. Fortunately the PHB defines a round: "six seconds in which you could reasonably do something, your character can do in a round." It also defines a free action as something you could do in the same insignificant amount of time that you could yell for help. So at fourteenth level of sorcerer, you can enchant a highspeed stock with quickenspell allowing you to pull the trigger on the same target six times (once a second) in a round (actually you could fire the weapon twelve times in six seconds but if you factor in the need to target the victim its six per round. Certainly an Autohit spell like magicmissile would give you 12 missiles per round. B. When I say Technomage I purely mean that as a reference for the kind of Sorcerer you are looking at. The Sorcerer is an Inventor devoted to improving magical technology. C. Yes Phrennzy, you got me on that one, as a single energycrystal with fifty charges, (the initial frost rifle) is a wand-which evolves into a staff as you advance it with metamagic feats. However, It qualifies as a Wonderous magic item if the PowerCrystal carrying the fifty charges of ray of frost are infact like a fireball necklace-a cluster of single-use activated spells. Conversion to be placed at top of Article. |

As long as there's a set attack #... Then again...maybe I just read the CharOp board too much. Ya know I still think that this idea would work better as a PrC or class of it's own...Here's my 2 minute stab at the idea: Arcane Weapons Engineer PrC Prerequisites: Knowledge Arcana - something Knowlege Engineering - something Craft (Weaponsmithing) - something Able to Cast Lvl 3 Arcane Spells At least One Metamagic Feat 1- Increased Spellcasting, Inspired Invention (Wandgun, Charge, Lenses), Weapon Proficiency (Wand-gun) 2- Increased Spellcasting, 3- Meta-Lense 4- Increased Spellcasting 5- Meta-Lense 6- Increased Spellcasting, Double Lens Chamber 7- Increased Spellcasting 8- Meta-Lense 9- Increased Spellcasting 10- Increased Spellcasting, Triple Lens Chamber, Improved Meta-Lense Inspired Invention Allows Character to create Wandgun, Shells and Lenses with craft check x. Charge Cannisters (ammo) To create a Charge Cannister, the character must sacrifice a floating spell slot of their highest lvl. Character may charge a cannister as a full-round action, xpending spells or empty spell slots to do so. Regular Lenses Character learns all of these at first Lvl Accurate - Character Lvl/5 as +to hit (at least +1) Focusing - Increases Range by 1.5 Efficient - Shots cost one less charge than normal. Blinding - Adds DC x save or target is dazed Etc. Double, Triple Lens Chambers Character may benefit from multiple lenses applied to one gun. Meta-Lenses Character may choose one lens to learn at appropriate lvls: Pulse Lens (Allows a full attack action w/ the gun, but significantly lessens damage w/ each hit.) Sniping Lens (Causes extra damage at long range, but damage bonus lessens at closer ranges) Multi Lens (Turns gun's shots into cone, w/ reflex save of some sort) Elemental Lens (Can alter damage to any element type) Etc. Only one Meta-Lens may be equipped in any gun at one time. |
| yellowdingo07-11-07, 10:49 AM | That is actually why i didnt want to go down the Prestige Class route with it, the complexity, As a (What would you call it?) Subcultural Template THE INVENTOR allows that social group (The GREYHAWK INVENTORS CLUB) or loner to develop magical technology. It is pretty good though, So you might want to develop your prestiege class (Arcane Weapons Engineer) into something you can Post on the RAGNAR's Repository Submissions Page. Unfotunately now we have developed the Inventor template with it's magic item at third level, We have left behind that other earlier concept. The one where the First level Wizard or Sorcerer with quicken spell can pull out his specially crafted nonmagical rifle and simply pull the trigger (for a somatic action specificaly to make the spell activate by the pulling of the weapon trigger) thus firing a Magic missile. This would have created a template like: A. NINJA Template where the wizard enchants throwing stars with magic weapon, sprays a sleep spell from a blowgun, dresses in black, and gets around with the cross class skill (move silently). B. STREET URCHIN Template where the street kid or beggar enchants rocks with magic weapon (or modified magicmissile to create a rock that autohits). Colourspray from a handfull of dust to realy distract an agressor while he makes that getaway and use the Skill of Diplomacy for begging. If you are interested there is a need for your Prestiege Class on the Mystaran (Other Worlds) Threads. They need the development of a set of Gnomish Prestiege Classes involved in Inventing in specific Areas (Arcane Heavy Weapons, Flying Machines, Servitor Constructs, Household devices-like greenslime dish washer, that sort of thing. Basicly if you are interested in the longterm project, You would develop a MiniGazetter for a certain Gnomish/Dwarf Community located in a kingdom called karameikos (the community is called...Highforge). |
