| JDRoundtree08-01-06, 12:38 PM | Hey all. I'm fine (competent) when it comes to statistically creating characters above 1st level (feats, skills, atributes), but I have difficulty guaging the kind of gear and ESPECIALLY magic items to give such characters. Does anyone know of a reliable system to generate magic items for characters of mid to high levels? If so, where did they find it? Thanks JD |

| Azezel08-01-06, 01:44 PM | There is a table in the DMG on page 135 which tells you how much total wealth a character should have, expressed in gp. Using this, select a number of items for your character which together cost this amount, or slightly less. Never, NEVER, spend more than half the total on any single item. As allways, your DM has the right to veto any item you sellect. As a general rule of thumb, if your character is a warrior type, spend 1/3 of your money on the best weapon possible, and 1/3 on the best armour. If you character is a caster, spend up to 1/2 the amount listed on p135 on an item which increases his casting power (a periapt of wisdom for a cleric for example). If your character is a wizard, spend most of the rest of the amount on scrolls and adding these scrolls to your spellbook. |

| Nephlite08-01-06, 02:57 PM | As a general rule of thumb, if your character is a warrior type, spend 1/3 of your money on the best weapon possible, and 1/3 on the best armour. Of course, using those rules full plate can't be used till 4th or 5th level because at 3rd it still uses 1/2 of money. Just an observation. |

Full plate shouldn't be easilly attainable, it's quite potent for our dexterity defficient sword swingers. Surely it's not game breaking...not even close. But it is expensive. I throw an auditing glance at the character that has it on their sheet prior to 3rd level. A standard shield, full plate at even a 12 dex gives a starting character a 21 ac and that's gonna make the first few levels pretty trivial for that character. I know, I know... magic missle blah blah blah. It's just my friendly opinion =) |
| StormCrow4208-01-06, 03:38 PM | The PHB 2 has some interesting tables of suggested gear for various levels. It's based around NPC wealth, but you can either move up the table until you hit the wealth level you're looking for or just augment the suggestions with additional minor gear. |
