What characters (from movies, books, comics, etc.) have you stolen and used in a game? How obvious was the theft?

Caine (from Heroes Die by Matthew Woodring Stover), 100% obvious if anyone in my group had been told about the book.

Roland Deschain (From The Gunslinger ) 25% obvious, since Roland is basically an archetype he wasn't all that recognizable.

Falstaff (Shakespear) Again, 100% obvoius if anyone had read the play.

I have yet to play a character based on any book/movie etc..., but I did allow my brother to play a daywalker vampire paladin/monk/hunter of the dead.

I always wanted to create a lvl10 paladin lvl10 blackguard vampire... you know, like Dracul or something... maybe less blackguard or paladin levels, considering the LA.

I use a lot of characters from movies and books as the basis for characters I'll make up.

Most of the time its just personallity wise. Someone like Tyrion Lannister (Song of Fire and Ice) is great for a on again/off again antagonist/partial ally. Will I make him a midget not all that great at fighting all the time? Not necessarily. But he will be suave, arrogant, manipulative, and ambitious.

as NPC's, let's see...
King Solomon
Beowulf
Sigfried (from the ring cycle, not Soulcalibur)
Alexander
John Wayne
Santa Claus
Jesus
Buddha
Ghandi
the entire cast of the Black Company (also some PC's out of them)
Captain Kirk
William Shatner (both of these were really evil BBEG's)

the king of cant
kierendall
Berne
and Ma'el Koth

as pc's, i generally don't have archetypal heroes...
like my cleric who learned giant insect and kept beehives and an ant colony on his ship...

i guess i kinda ripped off Gohan from DBZ (young one...no insane crazy monkey power for me) as a gnomish necromantic cleric who began pummelling everything after using vampiric touch...(both of these PC's were 2nd ed...)

as a side note...the char's i did steal were usually NOT the way they were written/filmed originally...

I rarely rip off characters from books or movies, but there is one I almost always use when I can't get any ideas going for a new game.

The Dread Pirate Roberts from The Princess Bride

The one I remember most was from a White Wolf Mage game where he dressed with the mask and everything (except for the sword) and when asked about the mask would answer using the direct quote from the movie.

What is sad is that he ended up being retired because the DM said he was too powerful and every character I have made for D&D like that either died early or the game ended early. I guess I will have to keep trying. :D

I have seen many characters copied in my games, although I rarely copy NPCs (if only because I've shown my friends all the movies and such I could copy from). One interesting one that didn't quite come to fruition was the sorceror who would be black mage. It's amazing what that wand of Magic Missile can do. Another fun one was the Archetypal elf archer. Took the normal feats (I allowed him to have some prohibitive weapon deficiencies in exchange for an extra feat) and took levels in Order of the Bow Initiate. Then he picked up a bow with the long shot enchantment on it (or whatever it's called). Long story short, the enemy found itself being rained on by arrows from a half mile away. By the time they got close, they had so much damage that the (now more accurate) arrows really began to drop them. Then came the magic missiles from the aforementioned sorceror.

My DM played a DM pc directly ripping off orlando blooms char from Pirates of the Caribbean (LN Swashbuckler), but what really got me was the name:

Jake, the Virgin Scourge of the Seven Seas

Remember Sephiroth from Final Fantasy 7? I created an Oriental Adventures character based around his fighting style. For those of you who don't know, he had like a 15' long sword.

When I was creating a character, I had a nice background history for him, and initially I had him using a longsword. Then with the way my background was written and I told my DM how I would play him, my DM suggested that I use bladed gauntlets which he made retractable. I in turn had them concealed under gloves and played him into a Wolverine-esque character.

I was definitely fun.

I love Tyrion. He's the only lannister i care for.

I usualy pick nice ideas for slightly overpowered NPC's. A thief with resistance to lightning but very annoying bibliophobia comes to mind.

In my time as player, I have never 'stolen' a character, but in my short time of DMing I have copied only Millenia from Grandia 2. And without anger management.

Nope its a little over 8 feet + a 1 &1/2 foot handle= 9 & 1/2 feet

and ive ripped
NightMare (Soulcalibur)
and a male version of Freya, Half Red Dragon Knight

Well one time I blatantly ripped off my character's familiar (that's right) from Gene Wolfe's Book of the Long Sun.

The protagonist, Silk, had a crow called Oreb that could talk and always said stuff like "Bad thing!" and "Good man!"

The conceit was that although Oreb had a very limited vocabulary, and acted like he was an ordinary mimicking crow, he was actually very wise, and could sum up a situation with just a few, simple words.

And the character himself was I guess what you'd call a "composite rip-off": He was named Ender (Ender's Game) and his appearance was modeled on The Shadow's, with a flowing black cape and a broad brimmed black hat. All very cliche, but I tried to put a cool spin on it and make it my own.

The only time I 'copied' a character was in terms of character design (I like to draw my charas. y'see), and that was (I hate to admit it) from the D&D movie-the Ridley character. I just really liked his outfit, so I stole it and used it for my ranger character.
Moot point now, though, as I've changed it since then.
Pentavite of the Flames

I stole the whole storyline of the Cleric Quintet. I was too lazy to write my own campaigns that term, and too poor to buy game books, so I stole that entire plotline. It went for 10 weeks, and was one of the better adventures I'd run. Fortunately, noone ese had read that book, and they still don't know I stole it. ;)

Azrael from the Batman comics.

Ravenshadow from J. Michael Straszinscky's Rising Stars.

Scarface from Shadow Skill.

A mixture of Asakura Yoh from Shaman King, Edward Elric from Fullmetal Alchemist, Conan and D from Vampire Hunter D (A half-giant psychic warrior who has an Arm of Nyr, believes his psionic powers to be the manifestations of spirits, uses two bastard swords and hunts undead in a hardcore-psycho way).

Wolverine.

Thrall from Warcraft 3 (Orc Druid. Had a brother who was basically Grom Hellscream, played by my friend).

The character ended up evolving into something different, so I never played it, but I did design a Planescape character based significantly off the tiefling in the mortuary at the beginning of Planescape:Torment (the one that was doing surgery using her claws as scalpels). The current version of the character, still being actively played, does do the claws-as-scalpels trick if someone actually takes the risk to let him work on them due (and he's freaking a-retentive about keeping his claws sharp, he keeps a file with him and sharpens them morning, night, and any downtime the rest of the day that he isn't drinking), but is very different from the original almost clone of the PS:T character. Which might not have been a good thing, because my DM was the one who started me playing PS:T and the character would have been 99% recognizable, even though it would only be something like 5% to everyone else in the group :)

I saw the movie Equilibrium right before I was slated to play in a Star Wars d20 game. My 16th-level character got around 15 shots per round, I think. :P

I'll come clean, I've taken some archetype themes for characters from the Redwall books by Brian Jacques. Mostly the vermin though and using them as a DM for making 'bad guy' NPCs. I did make a paladin based of Earthpaw from Salamandastron though. Still have no idea what that word means, if anything too...

Most Used: Vlad Taltos from Steven Brust's Dragaera series.

Runner Ups: Darth Vader, Wolverine, Merlin, Jacen Solo (NJO)
Tealgorthian

10-05-04, 01:27 PM
Rimmer Dall (I think that is the spelling) from the Heritage of Shannara. I also stole their version of the Four Horsemen
Kolo

10-05-04, 01:28 PM
I did once rip off a character for one of my own concepts, and the amazing part was that no one in my group recognized my divine powered-righteous-mighted divine-favoured extra large black armored mace-wielding form scattering humans and elves as being Sauron. goes to show that the best way to go is the obvious one. :D

Indiana Jones anyone?

Nice. I've always wanted to play an Indy character. Go for Temple Raider of Olidammara (PrC).

Nice. I've always wanted to play an Indy character. Go for Temple Raider of Olidammara (PrC).

The "proper" class for a whip-user is the 3.0 Lasher class from Sword and Fist (backed up by the whip dagger so you're doing d6 damage instead of d3), but Temple Raider (Complete Divine) works best for the Indy concept.

I haven't ripped off any characters properly yet. My first character was a rogue that was based off Snake from Metal Gear, but my youthful exuberance and general inexperience ruined the implementation.

The only time I've ripped off a character is when my Players wouldn't shut up until I made a D&D campaign where they worked alongside some old FF heroes and got to fight Seymore and Sephiroth. I hate what FFX has done to Final Fantasy. It's just attracting people who don't care about the old games and just want to play through X and X-2 because they are pretty and so easy they might as well just be all cinema.

I'll admit, I wrote up Sephiroth once and used him against my players in a one-on-one fighting tournament.

Me and a buddy of mine, whenever we play together, we usually rip off two of the guys from the Samurai Showdown fighting games. I can remember Ukyo and Jengero (sp?) they were probably the two best we made. We ripped off the names, appearence, even picked abilities that would allow us to almost emulate thier special moves in the game (of course, my DM wouldn't allow me to get 17 extra attacks if I threw an apple at an enemy first, but I still kept throwing those apples.)

I have Father Estaban Cortez from Hunter: The Reckoning

He's a lvl 6 Cleric of Tyr (Realms), he uses a repeating crossbow and a +2 Holy Longsword. He also has the Extra Turning feat and will soon start taking levels in Sorcerer.

I don't know if I posted here or not, but one of our players is a huuuge Drizzt Fan. His first incarnation of Drizzy came about in our first ever game where he was a... mutt. An Elf, Half-Song Dragon Male, Ranger, Sorcerer, Ninja (He never lived this character down. Sad part is, this one is his favorite character). In our current campaign, he blatantly said "I'm the surface version of Drizzt!" (And that, is the sound of my sanity being torn into shreds, then..... nothing). "All I need now is a panther animal companion!"

Dear lord save all of us from the spooniness that is our player. (BTW, he is banned from ever playing a druid again for being 'spoony').

Isn't the sequel to FFVII that's coming out a movie?

Yeah, my first character was a rogue/barbarian, originally styled after Conan. That didn't quite work out, but he was one of the better characters of our group.

Personally? Just Sephiroth. 1st & 2nd edition AD&D combo game. Other than that, none that I can remember.

I rip and have seen more rips then I can keep track of. Most of my games are from 10-16 players, and I'm lazy :D

Ones I have done as DM or PC;
Vincent Valentine
Edgar (ff6)
Gogo (ff6)
Locke (ff6)
Celes (ff6)
Laharl (My favorite character ever, from Disgea)
Etna (From Disgea)
Flonne (Disgea)
The Nun (From La Pucelle Tactics)
Aki Asura (Saga Frontier, based off of the Mystic Lord)
T260G (See above)
Sturm BrightBlade
Raistlin Majere
Lord Soth
Lord Rhal
Nathan Rhal
Giles Deathstalker
Owne Deathstalker
Jack Random
Tenchi Muyo
Ryoko
Washu (Love Washu!)
Sasami
Aeka

ones I have seen by my players
Neo. Yes, I play Mage. Yes, I hate Virtual Adepts (Sons of Ether forever!)
Digoji from some manga called Vagabond
the Vampire from Rebirth (Good manga)
Raistlin (He gets around)
Vash the Stampede (He did a good job too)
Tanis Half-Elven
Drizzit (Lasted 2 minutes, I made him RP his escape from the Drow)
The Incarnations. All of them. I like the Incarnation of Evil, personally.

Yes, I do it often. I personally don't see anything wrong with it, although I do demand some changes are made. I happen to love Aki Asura. In every game, on most forums, I am Aki Asura. Or Laharl. Neither of my versions are 100% of the original, but they are about 60%. That doesn't make me more or less creative then anyone else, IMO.

Although if you play 100% from someone else, your just being lazy. Give drizzit a scar across his face from a fireball spell that hit him as he was escaping. Makes him a little more original, and you can still have everything.
