My group is starting a level 5 campaign. Im DMing, but, since we are low on numbers, i need to make a NPC thats like a PC, so im wondering, what should i make. We have a fighter, a ranger, and a wizard/cleric. I was thinking about either a sorcerer, wizard/psion, rouge, or a Dragon fire adept. I am leaning towards Wizard/psion, and also putting in a rouge for flavor, wat do you all think?? |
| Kouk04-07-08, 08:37 PM | I don't think they need any more people. Drop them some extra healing items and good loot and there should be no problem. |
| tyrandor04-07-08, 08:43 PM | Well, I'm sure they can use more make up, rouge all the way. |
| Thurilien Lindoriad04-08-08, 12:23 AM | I'm with Kouk. Just be generous with access to healing items and don't throw too many traps at them, and it should work out fine. Start your enemies off on the weak side and adjust future encounters upward as you get more used to the party's battle strength. IMO, it's more fun to play without NPCs in the party. |
| Kelb_Havoc04-08-08, 01:59 AM | I agree with those who've posted before me that you don't really need another character in the group. You could easily avoid their weakness for the most part, but if you insist, go with the rogue. They're short a skill-monkey. |
| Braithwaite04-08-08, 06:56 AM | I wouldn't suggest a rogue, they get too much time in the spotlight (paradoxically). If they need a fourth member, make it a support character. Healer cleric/favored soul, Marshal, or Dragon shaman all come to mind. It should be the PCs defeating obstacles, not the wily NPC. |
| Shaggy_Shaggs04-08-08, 07:07 AM | They already have a skill monkey, rangers do fine in that role. I think they can get along with just what they have, though a few extra Cure Light wands for the ranger and the wizard/cleric to use sure wouldn't hurt. If something must be added, a low-powered support character would be a good way to avoid stealing too much spotlight time from PCs. Maybe a healer (as in healer, not healing-focused cleric or favoured soul). Alternately maybe a bard with a 1 level rogue dip (trapfinding), mostly healing and/or utility spells, and a focus on knowledge skills. |
| WilliamTanner04-08-08, 12:12 PM | I've got 2 NPCs in the game I am DMing, but the players don't resent them because I don't play them.. I let the players roll for control of them during each combat. When I was a player and the DM would take over PCs who's players dropped out of the game, I tended to want them dead. Can't say what it was exactly, but it is likely related to the DM having the power to push his weight around as a PC. |
| Hsien04-08-08, 12:45 PM | Concur with prev statements. They don't really need a 4th since your the DM and can customize the campaign. Support characters, like Healer are not bad...make them the camp guard that doesn't go into the actual dungeons/ known combat zones. Seen that done a few times and it works better then an "active" DMPC imo. |
