The rules for charging say that you must move to the closest square from which you can attack.

But the book does NOT say closest to you or closest to the creature. It's a little ambiguous.

I'm guessing it's the square closest to you, which makes sense. So you pick the square that's closest to you, and try to charge there. According to the book, if that square is occupied or you can't get there on a charge because of some barrier, you can't charge.

What if you have a reach weapon? Does that mean you stop 2 squares away and perform the charge attack? I suppose that makes sense because you can't attack with a reach weapon 5' away, only 10' away.

What if you're using a weapon that could be used at 5' or 10' (if one ever existed, which I suppose would if you're enlarged)? Which square do you pick then? Still the closest one to you? Do you have the option at that point of stopping 5' or 10' away?

The 5 and 10ft weapon is called a spiked chain. Great little tool, that.
And i'd say that, yes, a charge with a spear does let you stop 10ft away. not that that helps much against the retributive 5ft step+full attack.
For a 5 or 10ft weapon, such as a spiked chain...yes. you can choose.

Well, the closest square to the creature wouldn't make a lot of sense, since in the typical case there are 8 equidistant squares.

You must move in a straight line to the closest square from which you can make a melee attack. If you have a reach weapon, that means a square at reach range. The PH rules are silent on what happens if two squares are the same "movement distance" apart, though the miniatures rules (which are loosely equivalent) state that you may choose.
