Chances are by the time anyone responds to this, it'll be too late. But, I'll ask anyway: A 5th level hexblade has 5,000 gold to spare. Any ideas?

Trinkets, cool things, actually beneficial items are all good. It's more of a "What's some good items for cheap?" then a class-specific question.

I would make sure you have +1 armor, shield and weapon covered first. You might think of upping +1 top +2 on armor or shield for 3000 also. Then there are the +2 to a stat items at 4000, amulets of Natural Armor +1, Ring of Protection +1 for 2000. Also a cloak or vest of resistance +1. Those are the solid choices.

If you don't feel like simple number increasers or you already have that covered, then its more a matter of taste. If you have the magic item compendium, there are a lot of interesting low level things. In the DMG, I always like to have a Quall's feather Token, bird around for emergency messages. Heward's Handy Haversack is great for carrying stuff. Horseshoes of speed if you ride a lot (although thats a bit expensive for a non-central item at that level). You could get a pearl of power for your spellcasting. A hat of disguise always adds interesting options.

Buy enough chickens to start a farm, and forget this adventuring crap. Life is too short to go around making it shorter.

Also, the Magic Item Compendium has the Hexguards, bracers made specifically for hexblades at 3100gp. Still, I would say gauntlets of ogre power and suchlike would be better first.
