My fiance was recently invited to join a d&d game I'm involved in (2 pcs in my group, one ftr2, one wiz2), elected to make a rogue..

Gm: Would you maybe like to be a cleric instead?
Her: No, I'm not wanting to play a healer again.
Gm: maybe multiclass? You're starting at 2nd level, and it's easier to justify multiclassing at character creation.
Her: Nope..

(I stayed out of this, got an earful about this guy's talent for trying to make people's characters for them. He does, I have been gaming with this guy for 15 years and know how to deal with him).

Later I get a call from the GM.
GM: so, you guys may be in some trouble in the next adventure, since you're the only spell caster..
Me: Oh?
Gm: yeah, your party could really use another spellcaster, especially a cleric. I'm thinking of giving you an NPC.
Me: Why is that?
Gm:.... ..... I'm sending you guys up against some tough stuff, that can't be hurt with normal weapons.. once you're out of spells you guys will be hosed.
Me: ....
Gm: So I'm kinda worried about this..

I later explained this to my fiance... Frankly I would rather he hadn't told me we had this stuff in store. I don't mind being outclassed, i figure it's more fun, forces me to think out of the box... I'm willing to live with not being able to DEFEAT everything I meet.. Just need to explain this the gm..

Just don't try to convince her to play a healer. Rogues, at higher levels, make fine healers with UMD. Also, she may want to look into Skill Focus: UMD

Um... so? To a certain degree every DM has his quirks. Just ignore this particular one of two things happen.

A) He understands you can handle it.

Or

B) You all die and someone plays a bard.

No biggie. Rather than try to think your way out of this little problem, just 'do.' Let the facts guide your future choices. You are in the unique situation of having the results of this up and comming fight not affect your personal well being in the slightest. Be patient. Wait and see. You get the idea.

most groups will need a healer. i dont think the dm is doing anything so bad..

its going to suck to have to stop the session early and go home to rest after only an hr of gaming just because your fighter2 took 8 hps of damage.

talk your dm into letting one of you guys play 2 characters (one will be the cleric), or just let him make the npc..

but you WILL miss having the cleric in your party... especially at low levels.

If she is a good enough rogue, then she can get the money to buy healing from priests along the way... then possibly get your money back afterwards. heh heh. :D

Dude, why not just have your CHARACTERS rest? or buy potions of healing.

A Wand of Cure Light Wounds works wonders to help out a cleric-less group - and costs only 750gp.

Don't compromise a character concept over such an issue.

I agree with Tytalus, just get potions/oils of whatever you may need(probably Magic/Align Weapon by the sound of it.)

Also remember that AFAIK monsters in v3.x have damage reduction, not immunity vs. specific damage...at least not at level 2.

You might also consider investing in weapons that do different types of damage, as suggested by the Characters with Class articles. Get one of each(Slashing, Piercing and Bludgeoning.)

And I give your fiance 2 thumbs up for sticking with her concept and not giving in to the DM.

Stick with a rogue. As Tytalus said wands of cure light wounds (and later mod and serious) are pretty inexpensive. Sure they won't always be on hand in combat like a cleric will, but they virtually replace a clerics healing skills (as far as HP is concerned) out of battle.

Having said that, at level 2, who in the party can use such a wand? (I haven't played in 8 months, my rules knowledge is rusty)

A rogue with a 16 in charisma, max ranks in UMD, and skill focus would have a 50/50 chance to succesfully heal someone with a wand of cure light wounds at level one. I think.

Why doesn't your DM convince one of the other players to play a spellcaster?
