07-04-06, 02:54 PM So the other night a friend of mine tried some DMing. She's new to that facet of the game, so we kept it simple and did everything by the book. The only real exception she made was to start us (2 players) at 2nd level and to allow the other player to make a Shoal Halfing (from Stormwrack).

I rolled my stats and got an equivilent 40pb; 18, 16, 14, 11, 11, 10. That 18 actually came on four 6's! I was pretty pleased with it (one of the reasons I love rolling for stats).

So with those stats in hand, and my dedicated Fighter mentality, I set about making Choppy the slower-than-normal Half-orc.

I simply had no idea that a 20 Str and a Power-Attacking Greataxe was gonna be that devistating... Oy Vey, Choppy is just a pure damage machine. His Will blows though, so that's a major weakness.

I think I'm gonna keep Choppy, maybe tweak him a little. I'm definately thinking that he's taking a level of Barbarian at 3rd!

So that's my story; do you have a character that surprised you in a similar fashion?

I don't get it. You were surprised at how powerful your character was after maxing out his stength? Wasn't that what you were trying to achieve?

just for completness - what were your first 2 levels?

An equivalent story might be "I have a character with 18 dex and I was surprised at how good his AC was". The only answer to that is a slow clap.

07-04-06, 10:25 PM Now when you do the same thing with a goblin barbarian with Str 15, and are outdoing the entire rest of the party put together (human fighter, elf rogue, elf druid w/ snake companion) on damage output, without raging ever from level 1, that's when you go WTF. :smirk:

07-04-06, 11:14 PM How about a half-ogre barbarian with a club, and a strong urge to smash everything.....And, guess what? He is good at it!

Ok, jokes aside, I recently (as in last 3 days) started playing an Elven Swashbuckler. Starting at level 1, we eventually made it to level 3. I also really like the duskblade class, and I realized that the combination kinda fit character-wise. After figuring out what kinda stuff I would be able to do at level 4, I proceeded to pick up my jaw from the floor. I never realized how powerful he would be. It is an awesome combination.

07-05-06, 12:12 AM I have had this happe before, although it was on one of my first characters and I had no idea what you coul do with that much strength. (It was also a half-orc.)

07-05-06, 12:39 AM I mostly run fighter-types, but in a game last summer, I ran a sorc, and was very suprised at the resourcefulness I had. Definately will do more spell casting, provided I get to play again....

07-07-06, 12:39 AM i've always used rogues and never paid much attention to magic, but since my party had a rogue when i joined i went sorc. we started at level 7 and well. we were at the top of a hotel balcony fighting 15 chokers and well like...7d6 to all of them...so yeah

07-07-06, 07:48 AM I had a cleric in a first level campaign that killed the party's (very annoying) fighter in a straight up fight (no magic and the fighter won initiative).

07-11-06, 08:45 AM First level is pretty random, yes. Critical hits are usually 'No Save, Just Die' effects.

You could wear the same armor as the fighter, so if you're rolling a bit lucky on attack and damage, it is easy to beat him.
