| FootMeetsFace10-26-07, 08:51 PM | So I have a nice amount of gold. To be exact, nice enough to purchase a vest of the archmagi. My DM is telling me that at a 17th level avg wealth (340k) I am unable to purchase this. Something about only being able to buy something 50% of that amount? Is this right? |
| Rood_Inverse10-26-07, 09:06 PM | Are you in character generation? Or just visiting Ye Olde Magic Shoppe? During character generation, some DMs cap that limit on what magical treasure you can spend your money on. It just keeps people from getting one uber-leet item and not nearly enough to have food. Making your purchase would give you a robe... But nothing to wear under it. :P |
| FootMeetsFace10-26-07, 09:10 PM | Im visiting that one magic emporium a few roads down, the one which has just what you need. You know the one. But yeah Im looking to purchase the vest, Weve been campaigning for a while. |
| Rood_Inverse10-26-07, 09:24 PM | How bigt's the town? DMG does list wealth levels for communities. Might not be big enough to have/support a 350k gp influx. It could just be a simple issue of economics? |
| DrMorganes10-26-07, 09:51 PM | The wealth guidelines in the DMG recommend that no more than 50% of any given PC's total wealth be tied up in any single item. Generally speaking, this only comes into play when creating characters at any level other than 1st. However, it also helps a DM to manage his treasure awards, keep the relative power levels of the party members approximately even, and help maintain plan encounters where CR = APL. Having even one member waaaay outside the wealth guidelines tends to throw the already-iffy Challenge Rating system completely out of whack. That said, any DM worth the title can find ways to limit what a player can acquire without resorting to, "You can't buy that because the rules say so." I'm guessing your DM is still a bit wet behind the ears... |
