i got 2 friends who want to join a D&D group? the setting is living greyhawk

the level is level 1

usable books, players handbook, (unless you can convince the DM on a case by case basis)

rules

races must be out of the players handbook (except humans, who must be one of three subraces, all i don't have access to)

known accepted races

high elf (phb)
hill dwarf (phb)
rock gnome (phb)
lightfoot halfling (phb)
half orc (phb)
human (oridian, flanne, and another greyhawk human subrace, (not the gypsy one) avoid this, cause the dm has the book, not me)

stats
28 point buy

gold
max level 1 gold (no starting package, but standard adventuruers kit is accepted)

current party

hill dwarf axe and board fighter (me, a meat shield) (6 charisma) female oridian druid (human subrace, healer) with a wolf, male flanne monk (human subrace, skirmisher) female warmage (caster) of some other human subrace

aligment

any non evil (no evil aligned pcs)

banned books
book of 9 swords
pdfs
srd
crystalkeep
homebrew printouts

banned prestige classes (anything evil)
assassin
blackguard
slayer of domeil
unseen seer
red wizard of thay
incantrix
initiate of the sevenfold veil

special ruling
only monks may take vow of poverty
if you wish to use a noncore spell, you have to research it, have a spare slot, 10 ranks in the appropriate knowledge (arcana for arcane casters) (religion for divine casters, including druids, who now get knowledge religion as a class skill) 10 ranks in spellcraft and skill focus in the appropriate knowledge

i need roles these twoish new players can fill, i'm thinking another healer and a trapfinder, or trapfinder and another glass cannon

the path is shackled city

notes, i've seen goblins like crazy

I would suggest a rogue and a cleric to your players. :)

And I suggest to ask the players for their race and not to force them to play the class you suggest to them: it's their character, not yours.

Ask them what they want to be able to do, then suggest them skills/feats/spells to go with that.

Second vote for rogue or cleric.

I'm still trying to understand how a DM can allow the Player's Handbook, but ban the SRD. Parts of the SRD I can understand (like the bits on psionics), but the whole thing?!

the guy doesn't want to have to print out tons of attachments, he carries a lot of material anyway, (supplying a small trunkload of miniatures, a binder of character sheets, campaign material, rules, house rules, a ban list, encounter list and a motherlode of dice) he already looks through enough books, (he's his own rules lawyer, though i am a backup, for the minor things people skip in the players handbook)

one of the invited people looks at the pictures the monster manual and such and doesn't read the stat blocks, but picks based on what he think's looks cool (anything flashy) (he wants to play the better animated high level demons, devils, celestials and dragons, or banned subraces. he looked at unearthed arcana and wanted to play a fire elf, in monster manual 1, he wanted to play a pixie, a nymph, a balor, a solar, a pit fiend or some other flashy looking monster, he played W.O.W. on my account and now he wants to play a night elf druid or a blood elf paladin, his 2 characters on my account. just because of thier flashy appearance. i pay the monthly fee. he will play anything flashy, i doubt he will play a rogue, even though i am trying to convince him, we need one, i can optimize a level five rogue, but i can't survive as a level 1 rogue.) the other is picky about his concepts (one minor error in alignment or class feature, or one banned class in the build, and he has to start from scratch, he prefers roleplaying over metagame and prefers evil, though he may be willing to try other things. every character i've seen him play is some kind of spellcaster, trickery is his thing. high charisma, high intellegence, maybe high dexterity (if he has points to spare after super boosting his charisma, he prefers being a ringleader over a diplomat. he may be an awesome beguiler or bard. mr night elf druid/ blood elf paladin of W.O.W. on another persons account, fights more melee than anything, has never played DnD before, has concepts as highly impossible as my own, maybe a little more. has high expectations, is a powergaming shooter/racer fan and only cares about graphics presented)

In that case, an elf paladin/fighter with an addiction to magic potions.

As PDFs are rarely legal, of course that one makes sense. -although if the player can bring and show the DM look i do own it but i am ridicilus about the condition of my things, so i scanned it. i don't see how the dm could justify banning that.

SRD i am really curious about the ban on. Does the DM realize that the SRD is essentially the PHB put into stripped down form with no flavor text? How can you ban the SRD and not the core rule books?

As for suggestions, I would suggest ranger for one, a skill monkey is always handy and favored enemy goblins if you have seen a bunch. For the other a cleric would be handy, healing is always fun.

See what they want to play first though, and let them play that. Ask thim which character in LOTR is their favorite, and guide them into making a similar character. "i like gimli" well an axe wielding dwarven fighter seems like the one for you. Legolas? "well an elven ranger for you, bow path." Just make sure to explain that they are not gimli or legolas, just similar characters.

Perhaps the dm owns the local flgs?

Perhapse, and I guess the DM actually means a ban on things ni the SRD that are not in the books (psionics).

Who knows, some DMs are just strange.

Then how 'bout a Half-Orc Ranger and take Goblins as your Favored Enemy? You'll be able to fights the Gobbos on their own terms (Darkvision & 30 move).

Str-14 (falchion in melee, mighty comp. bow),
Dex-14 (combat style- archery- longbow, decent Initiative),
Con-14 (3-11hp/lvl, eh, not too bad),
Int-10 (no penalty, for the skills),
Wis-12 (Spot, Listen, Survival/Track, Will save),
Cha-10 (Wild Empathy/ Handle Animal > Animal Companion, no penalty)

Feat- Power Attack or Dodge > Mobility

That's what I would play. They could scout/skirmish with the Monk or flank for the Dwarf for the quick kill and offer up a little healing if the Druid is not in a position to do so. Plus a fair set of skills. Something for almost every situation.

If you throw in a level of rogue or scout it can.
