| neceros01-26-08, 09:37 PM | Hello Everyone, I'd like to let everyone in on a new character sheet that's been engineered recently. I've gone around and took some of the best looking sections of some of the most popular sheets on the internet and combined them to make the base of this sheet. Since then I have altered the work into one of the best sheets I've ever used. Of course, I'm bias. Please feel free to critic it yourself and let me know what you think. http://www.neceros.com/images/NEC_3.5_UltimateCharacterSheet_1.2.jpg (http://www.neceros.com) |
| jage01-26-08, 10:12 PM | New? You mean I'm like one of the first few to download an use it? I have to say I found it easily enough. It's an awesome sheet, or sheets acutally. Suitable for 4x multi classing, although I used it for a pure Rogue. The only thing it really seemed to lack was form fields to allow typing permanent (semi-permanent) info. Bravo, excellent work! |
| neceros01-26-08, 11:50 PM | Thanks, Jage. I am currently working on adding form fields, that you mention it. :) The character sheet was debuted early January, so yes, you are one of the first I've seen use it. It brought a lil tear to my eye, honestly. :) Good gaming. |
| jage01-27-08, 02:15 AM | It brought a lil tear to my eye, honestly. :) If that's true then you'll be outright crying when you see how badly I abused your design: http://www.jage.com/offsite/dnd/WotC/NECUltimatecharsheet.gif So I included a no-shield AC line simply because I'm playing a character that likes to switch to a bow a lot. Problem is rogues aren't proficient in shields, so it was a superfluous mod. I also included an extra WILL save line for fear based as that's a racial mod, and one for MELEE with the Weapons Finesse and RANGED for each thrown and normal. I'm sure if I'd played in the last 20 years none of this might make sense. I used the ABCD multi column in saves to record special info (as I'm single class) and recorded the -5 next to 2nd attack in the column header (not sure if this ever changes by class or level?) I put little boxes by my FEATS and SKILL TRICKS for checking them off from daily use. I found it useful to be able to write in the black title boxes (e.g. AC "no shield") consider a grey stripe or grey background: http://www.jage.com/offsite/dnd/WotC/NECtitleboxes.gif Although the fact that my sheet is a 72 dpi scan of a 3rd generation photocopy of your PDF says a lot for the design in that it is still legible, and doing grey isn't worth screwing that up. Also the Ability modifiers get lost under the numbers, so if someone had +3 across the board (or down the Skills/Ability column) and went to +4 in one stat the Ability gets lost under their score. Consider putting them all to the side: http://www.jage.com/offsite/dnd/WotC/NECmodifiers.gif And one last thing, if I were you I would put the website or a main download site right under the character portrait because I know people are going to be asking where to get these at the gaming table the minute they start showing up. Again, excellent work all around! |
| neceros01-27-08, 04:00 AM | I wholly appreciate all the comments you've given here. It gives me great insight into how other people make their characters, and I do love insight! I'm going to work on incorporating these differences into the next version of the sheet in layers, so they you can change the options as you see fit per printing. Thanks again. :) As an aside, it seems you're using a slightly older version of the sheet. Although it's nothing important to update, just thought I'd let you know. I'm gonna record the sheet version on the sheet from here-on. As under the Creative Commons License, I love seeing how people change it to their likings, and I encourage it! |
| Sakaki2201-27-08, 07:51 PM | I've spent the past several months tweaking my own personal character sheet. Made in Paint with tireless effort, it was designed to be four pages (three based on class, one based on race) as a build your own, ideally designed as a portfolio with character art, items, and backstory on the outside, and more than all of the info on the PHB sheets on the inside, with pockets for single sheets for spells, spellbooks, Prestige Classes, bags of holding, and so on. As soon as I downloaded your sheet, I abandoned the whole thing! It's almost perfect for everything I need. I may make a fourth page of my own (under creative commons, of course) for character level progression, to track levels 1-20. But other than that, your sheet is simply, IMO, perfect. I may never use another sheet again. |

Thank you very much. :) I'd be interested in the fourth page you made, if you finish it! Let me know :) That's another idea I've had. I've been mulling over how to best put that on a sheet, though. |
| concerro01-27-08, 10:32 PM | Seems like a nice sheet. I will try it in my next session. |
| HARLEYDUDE01-28-08, 12:20 PM | I really like it. It is an improvement over the sheets I use now and others I have tried. I suggest to add a small box (like the current HP box) near the saves and one near the attacks for special circumstances. ie. +1 saves vs. spells for dwarves etc. or energy resistance. Also add a box for grapple score for the animal companion. I will use it as is for now. I like it very much. I dont have adobe, so I cant change anything now. I do need another animal companion. I play a Beast Heart Adept. thanks again HD p.s. I will post again after i use it to let you know how it went. |
| narack01-28-08, 12:38 PM | really really nice sheet. im going to use it from now on. weapons list should be higher but no one will even be able to do much about that since the damn skill list is always taking half a page :D. the size on the weapon box are perfect, we can now write +5 Vorpal keen adamantium Flaming Burst Elven Thinblade |
| M-bark01-28-08, 12:57 PM | The sheet looks grandular and absolutely flabbertastic. I had been looking for sheets on which I could have more than just five Knowledge skills. :) |

The skill list will be greatly reduced in 4e, so I'm looking forward to that. Thanks! I never liked running out of room for my million properties, either. The sheet looks grandular and absolutely flabbertastic. I had been looking for sheets on which I could have more than just five Knowledge skills. :)The big issue here is that knowledges are important, it's hard to tell how many one person will need. The wizard needs many, but the fighter needs few. That's typically why there are extra lines at the bottom. :) I really like it. It is an improvement over the sheets I use now and others I have tried. Actually, if you're using version 1.5 (the most current) if you are using Acrobat, you can click on the layers button (usually on the left side, in acrobat 8) and click Option B. It will reduce the Feats list a little and give you those conditional boxes you are looking for. :) Oh, companions need to grapple, too, don't they? :) Click here... http://www.neceros.com/images/layer_help.jpg Then switch both Option Bs to look like this: http://www.neceros.com/images/layer_help2.jpg |
| concerro01-28-08, 09:17 PM | I just put one of my characters on this sheet. I like it a lot. If you modify it again you should try to devote a bigger section to the feats, and special abilities section so I can have room to write down what they do like the Eberron sheets do, but it is still an excellent sheet. If I get time I will do it, and send it to you, but it will be at least a week. |
| neceros01-29-08, 03:18 AM | A quick reply: I've updated the sheet again to match some of your wishes. Check my website for everything updated under the download page. Hint: room for two familiars. |
| SmokerDragoon01-29-08, 04:55 PM | What about adding room for more classes? Many of my games go epic :king: , and some of the characters have 6 classes by level 30. Other than that, I like it and it will see use. |
| Watsyurname52901-29-08, 05:04 PM | I must say, bravo. This is one very well designed sheet. I like how you one, updated it to add psionics, two actually made it easier to understand for beginers, and three just added more space and not just for one class but up to four! Thank you for this valuable addition to D&D. |
| HARLEYDUDE01-29-08, 05:08 PM | Hey neceros I sent you a private message. please check and let me know. thx HD |
| Zombie_Babies01-29-08, 05:12 PM | While this is a very nice sheet indeed, I must ask: doesn't anyone make their own with a pen and paper anymore? I see a lot of threads with people asking for sheets because they can't find one that works for their concept. I've made my own for 17 yrs and I can't say that they've ever failed me. Each one is different and tailored to the character I'm playing at the moment. They work from level 1 to 20 and above with any number of class combinations. There is also no unused clutter, either. No skills I don't have or use, no area for spells if I don't have any, etc. I dunno... guess I just can't give up the old habit :). Now, after saying all of that, I do feel that I owe at least something to this thread soo... To the OP: very nice indeed. It looks to be quite comprehensive and if I were to use a pre-gen sheet I'd use one like this. If what people here are saying is true and it is as flexible as it seems, kudos, sir. Keep up the good work. |
| LordGriffin01-29-08, 05:26 PM | the size on the weapon box are perfect, we can now write +5 Vorpal keen adamantium Flaming Burst Elven Thinblade Thanks. Actually, while neceros has done all of the actual work on this sheet, he's constantly asking for input. Many of my ideas have gone straight into the design, including the larger weapon name box. This project might seem like a "simple character sheet", but it's actually the result of dozens of hours of work. Neceros released the first public version several weeks ago and he's still looking for input. EVERY idea that's been given to him, he's attempted to work into the sheet in some way or another. Sometimes it's a tiny little tweak, other times he has to create a new layer to expand options. One of my personal ideas was the blank boxes at the top on the sheet under HP, SR, DR and init. These were initially intended to be used for sneak attacks, or stunning fist attempts. My question for you is ... what do YOU use them for (if anything). Since it's my personal idea, I have a vested curiosity in if they're even being used, and if so ... what for!? Anyway, KEEP THE INPUT COMING. This sheet is still in development and Neceros needs YOUR input to make it "perfect". |
| M-bark01-29-08, 05:26 PM | With the "extra" familiar/animal companion/psicrystal part, I'm glad. However, some parts of the sheet are quite messy, with lines running where they better not. Could these be gotten rid of? |

| NPC_Tyler01-29-08, 07:10 PM | Beautiful sheet, works good with all classes, it's clean, and has lots of room! |
| narack01-29-08, 08:17 PM | what is that on the spell section : points to cast: 17 this is the one in spell level 9. if you mean characteristic stat i should be 19. 10 + level of the spell. |
| Artector01-29-08, 08:31 PM | Good job. I'd actually use this sheet if I was going to use one. I'd also give it out to new players. While this is a very nice sheet indeed, I must ask: doesn't anyone make their own with a pen and paper anymore? I see a lot of threads with people asking for sheets because they can't find one that works for their concept. I've made my own for 17 yrs and I can't say that they've ever failed me. No skills I don't have or use, no area for spells if I don't have any, etc. I dunno... guess I just can't give up the old habit :). I do, sometimes P&P, but most of the time a text document works wonders. I've ended up with wonderful inovations to them too. what is that on the spell section : points to cast: 17 this is the one in spell level 9. if you mean characteristic stat i should be 19. 10 + level of the spell. Its referring to alternate system mechanics. If you are playing a core spellcaster ignore it. But if you are playing a spell point mage, or a psionicist, then it tells you the point cost. |
| Eldritch_Lord01-29-08, 08:36 PM | what is that on the spell section : points to cast: 17 this is the one in spell level 9. if you mean characteristic stat i should be 19. 10 + level of the spell. That's the power point cost (or spell points with UA), not minimum ability score to cast. ---------------------- I'm a DM more often than a player, so I usually use severely compressed stat blocks unsuitable for PCs, but the next time I actually play I'll probably use this one. |
| neceros01-29-08, 08:50 PM | Wow! Thanks for the replies, everyone. :) Please let me know which lines you refer to. I spend countless hours refining every line and mark on this sheet to the middle of the night, so if I've failed I need to know where to fix it. Also, our cat ensures each page is tested for durability and comfort level frequently. She only lays on the best of character sheets in my room. Or anything else that crinkles. I actually do use pen and paper occasionally myself. Sometimes I just don't have access to a printer, and honestly you just don't need a full sheet all the time. I use pregen'd sheets to keep myself in order and to ensure I've marked everything. I can be forgetful. If you are having trouble printing the sheet in hole try checking the box "Fit to Paper Size" when you begin a print. It will shrink it down tot he proper margins your printer can handle. As to adding more room for classes, of course it's possible. The problem, however, is finding real estate on the page. Space is precious. First thing that comes to mind is ditching the Portrait to add more classes, which is entirely possible as an Option. However, the skill list is pact in as it is. There would be no room to add more classes to the skill section. I advise you to send me an email if you have A particular design you'd like implemented. I can't guarantee I'll see these boards every day, but my email goes straight to my blackberry. :) Good gaming. |
| Jagyr Ebonwood01-30-08, 02:03 PM | I really like this sheet. I like the concept of 3 pages with the third page being devoted to spells. That let's non-spellcasters cut it down to a single sheet double sided to save on paper, and I can swap it out for my custom spellpoint sheet in my games that use spellpoints. Well done  |
| M-bark01-30-08, 03:01 PM | Thanks for the input. What line, though, are you referring to? Could you elaborate on this "messiness" you're referring to? There are lines running through the second and third familiar/etc. sheet parts. There's a line on which you just write the stats as normal, but there are also lines a little above it. Link to a picture with arrows pointing to some of the lines (not all of them) (http://img247.imageshack.us/img247/316/messinessvk4.png). The same goes for the feat, class and racial abilities section on the first page. |

HD p.s. I dont use Adobe much so this took awhile to figure out but when you do its easy. |
| Martin_the_Warrior01-30-08, 07:54 PM | I like it...... I'm transferring my wizard onto this thing. But where's the parts for incarnum? |
| neceros01-30-08, 08:12 PM | I like it...... I'm transferring my wizard onto this thing. But where's the parts for incarnum? I've never used incarnum. Let me know what you specifically need and I'll see what we can do. :) |
| LordGriffin01-30-08, 08:35 PM | I like it...... I'm transferring my wizard onto this thing. But where's the parts for incarnum? Please consider that it's impossible to create a sheet that conforms to EVERY possible character. Some classes and options just don't fit very cleanly into a standard mold. Incarnum and Nine Swords are two examples of character types that require unique layouts that differ from most other possibilities. One of the design goals of this sheet ended up being that we didn't want to include sections that would only be used by a small sect of classes. For instance, there is no "flurry" attack progression. There is no "sneak attack" box. Heck, even spells (which are fairly common) got shoved off to a different page. Almost every feature on the main page is designed to be usable by almost every character. If Incarnum has special needs, perhaps a separate sheet would be in order? |
| neceros02-02-08, 04:23 AM | Note: I've updated the sheet to 1.7. Visit neceros.com for more information. :) |
| Mikron02-03-08, 12:37 AM | Very nice sheet. I like it a lot. Thanks for the effort! I'd love if you could actually type something on the computer and then print the sheet. I just like nice looking character sheets without my horrible writing all over. Moreover, I'd like an option to highlight the class skills (bold letters or even a colourful background). Of course you'd have to print a new sheet before every adventure, but since we don't play too often, I'd use it. Since I don't know anything about acrobate reader, I don't even know if it's possible, though... |

Check back in a couple days. I would suggest using a highlighter to denote the things important to you. It's, unfortunately, not possible with reader without Professional to alter the pdf dramatically. Good gaming |
| neceros02-03-08, 06:02 PM | I've added the form version of this sheet today. Please visit my downloads page to get the latest edition! http://www.neceros.com/index.php?page=down_dnd Thanks! |
| Ash2Dust02-04-08, 02:27 AM | Good work. One nitpick I would make about the website would be to make the download buttons links instead of buttons so that people can right-click and save-as instead of having to open the pdf in their browser. |
| Dalkor02-05-08, 03:29 AM | In the Ability scores table there is a column for level adjustment. I am unsure of why that is there could someone elaborate please? I know what level adjustments are of course, but the closest thing I can think of is that column is for ability modifiers that you get from your race/template. Could someone please verify that for me heh :/ Other then that the sheet is beautifully done. I would suggest that with the layers edition you mess around and make the sheet applicable to all classes at least PHB classes, of course thats only a suggestion. Another suggestion which is primarily aesthetic... change the 'Turn Undead' to 'Turn/Rebuke Undead' for all those evil clerics and dread necromancers out there XD. Other then that I have nothing more to say. |

If you don't want to do that, you can put whatever you like there, like racial stats. In truth it's just another column to allow you to see where your stats are coming from. Use it as you like. Good call on the Rebuke part. :) |
| neceros02-06-08, 12:03 PM | Form updated to auto calculate. |
| neceros02-12-08, 02:22 PM | Update: The form version is now savable. Re-download it from my website below. |
